Why do you think players got paid under the table before?

Wait...what???

Would a player want under the table money to dodge taxes?
I'd be willing to bet most haven't even thought of that, but I'd also bet most would rather pay taxes and be guaranteed to never be found ineligible to play. And even then, a "customer" could just increase the payout accordingly.

I wasn’t even really suggesting money would be under the table. Rather I think NIL brings it to above the table. But I think there are rules within NIL that are surely getting broken by the same peopel that would break the rules before.

Why did people break the rules given the risk? Competitive advantage. Why did players accept the money before knowing it would risk their eligibility? Most are destined for the pros anyway, and for basketball it is one year and usually found in hindsight. Why would recruits risk it now? Well simple scenario - coach A tells you he projects your earnings between $500k-$1M through NIL. Coach B tells you he can guarantee you’ll earn no less than $400k and projects $500k-$1M through NIL. Which offer is more enticing to a 17 year old? They aren’t idiots. Guaranteed money is guaranteed money

For one, they literally couldn't legally get paid at all. If the only drawback to staying entirely above board right now is that you can't promise dollars, but you can give projections with history to back it up, I don't see why anyone would consider that risk worth it.
yep you just have to add 2 winks and 2 nudges LOL

NIL will be a real world tax education for the top recipients. Do I Have To Pay Taxes On My NIL Deals?

Seems like it would be short-sighted (potential for bad PR, poor brand management, not to mention likely illegal) for a budding superstar to get mixed up with a scheme to redirect potential NIL money under the table. Business folks on the other side of the transaction, at least the smarter ones, will also realize they have many of the same concerns and considerations, particularly with a legal path readily available.

There will always be some athletes and boosters at some schools willing to do whatever it takes, under the table or otherwise, in a very competitive recruiting environment and take the NCAA/tax/legal risks that come with it. Still glad to have the alternative, legal NIL path available to get some $ to players and allow programs that don't (or don't want to) operate with bagmen to be in the player compensation game in a more legal way.

Memphis held a sort of pre-season pro day about a week ago. His measurables are below:

FBCxy3BUUAAnOzM

For reference, Luka Garza beat out his sprint, agility, and shuttle times while nearly matching Bates's vertical numbers.

Garza hit 24/29 on the verticals. 3.51 on the sprint, 11.9 on agility, 3.38 on the shuttle. https://www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-strength-agility/

On top of all that, there are all sorts of stories out there about his lack of work ethic, stagnation in development after going to the prep school his dad created, etc.
These measurables are surprisingly low. I have routinely done nba combine testing with my teams and I have a 6’3 player currently playing low d1 who beats him out literally in every category.

That is what can’t teach 6’9 looks like.

The Wingspan and vertical jump numbers are so bad, I almost don't believe them. A 6'9 basketball player w/ a 6-7.25 wingspan is pretty odd.
Yeah, and the fact that Memphis actually published them/didn't fudge them is odd too. Teams will bump up a player's height/measureables all the time. I don't see what Memphis would have to lose from doing that here -- instead, they published an anti-advertisement for their prized recruit.

Also, the "Roster Height/Weight" seems suspect (why put "roster" in front of it anyways?). Given that every other measurement is down to fractions/decimals, those numbers seem too neat to be accurate.

titus & tate in their podcast (you-tube available) express a high level of doubt that Bates' measurables could be so bad and engage in various theories about what could possibly be going on, including some sort of ploy to try to keep Bates at Memphis for two years (he can't go NBA next year)... but all seems too byzantine to make much sense to me

Incompetence usually is a bigger factor than convoluted conspiracies.

I too thought the "Roster" addition was interesting. What are the possible measurements available?

i have no interest in judging kids (whether basketball players, rappers, rock stars, "influencers", child actors, or whatever) for not having the maturity to navigate the world that they find themselves in (I'll reserve my scorn for those older)... but Illini fans should be proud of the fact that we have had a series over the past four years of high-level recruits who have displayed amazing maturity and focus on working to be the best they can be and make the team the best that it can be... georgi, ayo, kofi, miller, curbelo... i was disappointed that adam miller transferred and would question its wisdom, but one cannot argue that he was anything less than admirable in his year here... i have to conclude that it is not an accident that underwood recruits high-character players and will never question it when he stops pursuing someone, whatever the number of stars... he's human, so he may misjudge, but he has earned my trust

i should say, having become a season-ticket holder when Bartow took the coaching job and contining to be until 1996 when I finally left C-U for a position in Israel, we have been fortunate in our heroes (no one more than Deon Thomas, who today would have stuck with the Illini when he was told he could play basketball immediately if he just played for someone other than the Illini??)... we should be grateful that so far in this new world of college basketaball we are on a good course and the promised land is not a distant and unattainable goal

Check out what Musselman is doing down in Arkansas. I’m hoping Underwood and Co. start pulling that level of talent consistently soon. It seems that they are on that trajectory.

5 top 100 players. However 3 are from Arkansas and 1 from Alabama, so let’s see if he can sustain when the talent is not local.
