Not sure how we don’t look at playing some sort of zone going forward. At least for stretches of the game.

When healthy, Frazier/curbelo/Plummer out front with kofi/Hawkins back in a 1-2-2 or 3-2 looks like one route to me. Hides belo and Plummer but still protects the middle. Always old reliable 2-3? Can’t abandon man to man, but have to have other options we are willing to go to
I said this same thing the entire 2nd half.

When you can't keep them out of the paint, try zone for 4-5 minutes and see what it gives you.

LOL....I see what you did there.... No doubt that when (and if) we can play with greater than half of our typical starting lineup all at the same time, we should be better al the way around. My point was that for the majority of the game, the majority of our guys looked like cones that UTRGV were blowing by on the way to making layups. Trent is our best defender, no doubt. But, the other guys need to be able to keep their guy in front of them! AND.....this wasn't a top-tier team that we were playing against! I wish I could just drink the orange kool-aid and believe that everything is going to turn out great. But, until I see a team that plays defense and doesn't look lost 1/2 the time on offense, I will reserve my optimism.
We had forwards trying to guard smaller, quicker guards with handles. That is not going to happen!

Fine but just saying. Our lineup tonight did not truly consist of upperclassmen. Most of the minutes consisted of a freshman (Goode), a sophomore (Hawkins), two guys who have been injured for two years straight (BBV and Hutch), a transfer who legit can't guard (Plummer) to go with DaMonte and Kofi. That's not easy to patch together man.

I'm with you on offense though. We're averaging 17 turnovers a game. That's insane.

I think we were set up in a zone on the possession when DMW fouled out.

Did not watch the replay closely, but I'm quite sure that one was man-to-man D. DMFW was way out high, and tight on his man, trying to force him left.

After living through the last few years of Weberball and all of Groceball , I can't understand the negativity after a 9 point win with 3 starters out..........BU has instilled a culture of every day guy's and we will play whoever is cleared to play and compete our a**es off , Cincy game being the exception....

The vitriol of some of the posts I have read tonight with all the missing players just astounds me ....It really really does.........

I guess myself being a glass half full person leads me in thinking that way , but sometimes it really goes over the line ...............................

I guess that a message board really is a barometer of society at large ....i just didn't think there was so many unhappy people in the world concerning sports programs......I wish we would go undefeated every year , but I'm not that naive to expect that.....I just still get very excited when my Illini win , regardless of the way it looked.......

Anyway , great win illini and I'm looking forward to the next game against the golden domers....

Well, I actually enjoyed this game. Nearly every player was thrown into a new role and each had highlights:
1) Melendez giving Hutcherson a spell when Hutch was struggling. And hitting a buzzer beater to end the first half.
2) Kofi with clutch free throws, and another assist.
3) Hawkins responding to getting benched in first half, and playing more under control in second, and coming up with a big block late.
4) Plummer with some clutch free throws and obviously the big first half as a starter. I thought he had better defensive energy than the first few games.
5) Damonte taking care of the ball, big offensive rebound late. 8 assists and 0 turnovers.
6) Goode hitting a big 3 with the assist from Kofi. He also brought good energy and a great close out to block a late 3 and seal the game.
7) Hutcherson settling down in the second half and scoring a nifty, driving left hand layup.
8) Bosmans-Verdonk with 6 assists against only one turnover.

Were they sloppy at times and mistake prone? Yes, they were. Do our guards struggle to keep opposing guards out of the paint? Yes, they do. But they won, and many contributed to the win.
Why didn’t Podz play?
