You are correct to a point. But 25 points off turnovers will lose you games to good teams. We came out ok at Iowa. Not tonight. Have to be better imo. Without looking I thought we got down to around 10 last year when we were at our best.
Perhaps the 2 biggest plays were complete bonehead plays. Damonte's technical which killed our momentum and gave Arizona free points, and Plummer just standing there and getting a 5 second call.

You can always pick out a play or two in a close game, when the reality is every turnover is equally damning. Those two were just mentally unacceptable.

A year ago this past week we blew the doors off Duke at Cameron Indoor and then four days later lost to Miznoz. Then blew the doors off Minnesota at the Hall the following week and proceeded to get owned at the RAC. After that Rutgers game I vividly recall the weeping and gnashing of teeth on the board, which I thought was unwarranted. We had the pieces, just needed to play defense and get tougher.

Think of the turmoil this team has had with injuries and rotating lineups this fall. Does anyone really feel worse about where it and program are this evening than they did a year ago tomorrow after losing in St. Louis? Everything has worked against them since early November and yet, with merely a few tweaks and a bit more discipline this team is just going to be a juggernaut.

Hate losing, particularly b/c it was a one-possession game in the 60th minute against what is easily a Top 5 team despite all the TOs, Kofi having an off day, CoHawk disappearing, failure to fight through screens, and that catastrophic DMW technical. I loved every minute of watching that game this afternoon. The Hall was electric, our boys were absolutely dominant in stretches, and it felt like old times again.

So, yeah, hate losing, but boy do I feel good about these boys and our coach. Felt good and optimistic a year ago at this time. Feel much, much better now. Am so looking forward to January and February.

One man's view in his 39th season of bleeding orange and blue.

It surprised me, I kinda thought myself that the 5 second call was gone in college basketball. Guess you better know that if you're going to be on the floor.
This isn't the first time we've had it called this season.

Would have been great to win this one, but Arizona seems so much more physical than Illinois, a big team and their guards could score with easier shots as well as 3 pointers. We had some great 3 point shooting by our 3 shooters, and Cockburn did better in the second half, but overall this looked like a game we could have won, but Arizona was just bigger and tougher than us. We really need more inside scoring and more consistent defense and rebounding, and lower turnovers to beat a team like Arizona. I think we had great effort and great outside shooting today to make it close.

Gave up too many 2nd chance points. We need to win the rebounding battle.
Lost by 1 overall rbs...agree with the 1st pt...it seemed every time they missed they had someone on the other side to clean up. A couple of plays made the difference.

Arizona is really good not sure how they are only ranked #11. As usual I am a little disappointed with our offense. To much of the time players without the ball are just standing still around the perimeter. It forces to much stagnation which creates most of our turnovers. If we tried less to force the ball into Kofi and run more sets I think we can take the next step. I also blame the coaching staff on the lack of execution down the stretch. We played street ball with Frazier and Plummer crushing it for most of the game. But with the game on the line the team was not disciplined enough to know where the ball should go and Grandison was left to hoist shots up much deeper than he wanted to.
Has Kofi regressed this year with his hands? It seems like he is not catching the ball clean.
I really like Hawkins ability but i think his plus minus over the last few games has to be horrendous. Grandison should be starting going forward.

I hope you’re right, but seems like I read that in every postgame thread since the Marquette game. So many turning point games has me dizzy.
What!?!?

we beat the breaks off of Rutgers who just beat Purdue.

we won at Iowa.

if you’re looking to cheer for a team that wins every game, every year, the globetrotters usually come around once a year.

I know I took some heat saying I had a bad feeling and that I thought AZ was likely the better team (and maybe best in the country). But I was pleasantly surprised by the game tonight. Mathurin has a season high. Kriisa had a greet night. I bet that’s about the best they’ve played all year. And we came within an eyelash of beating them. We came out fearless and I thought played really really hard.

Which is why I was surprised Underwood was so ticked off at his presser. Most ticked off I’ve seen him in a couple of years, and given all of our adversity, would have thought he would have been happy just to keep it close. He clearly thought we should have won the game and get the impression he thought we were the better team. Which I’m thrilled with! I still think once we get Belo back our ceiling is as high as anyone’s and seems like Brad agrees.

Would have loved to get a win, but that’s one of if not the best team in the Country. I think we can clean up the softness on both O and D (I get the feeling Brad would fix it tonight if he could) and by March we could have last years D plus all of our shooters.

One last note, major bummer about Hutch. Obviously Belo is the headliner but as a 6’6 slasher/shooter, he’s another piece we are missing, particularly tonight. Even just 15 minutes and 6 points would be huge. Hopefully one of the frosh step up.

All in all was happy with the game tonight. Looking forward to seeing the team continue to improve. Go Illini!

I don't know how many of you watched his post game presser but, I just have to say this again....I f'ing love Brad Underwood.

A question about fatigue with accomplishing what they need in practice....
"I'm not soft."

BMFU. Full stop. Ride or die.
Absolutely, my friend. I'm there with you. Switched the game off and went to get the Xmas tree with the daughter. After we got back and set it up I went back to the board and watched the presser. I made a post earlier about how good I feel about this team despite its travails (heck, probably because of their travails.) The loss of AC has been huge and yet I'm sitting there this afternoon watching our team w/o its sophomore PG whom some people (as BU pointed out) listed as a preseason All-American, and it's going toe-to-toe with what is probably a Top 5 team using an offense improvised during the past four weeks. [EDIT: No. Strike that. Not going toe-to-toe. Beating the &$%*ing daylights out of that Top 5 team for long stretches.]

I watched the presser and, yeah, of course, BU's going to grind them and they're going to get tough and play D and protect the ball. No doubt. That's just what he does and he doesn't not do it.

I pity BT teams in January when Dre's back and they roll. We'll see some flat out beatings and we'll see some epic battles. Love the guy.

We are the 20th best team in America without our most important player. That tells you how good a program Brad and assistants are building here.
Our most important players were in the game. If Kofi had to play against 2 seven footers each game with no power forward to help him his results would be like today. Hawkins has to get better for this team to get better. Curbelo will help but outside of Kofi and Plumber there were only 6 turnovers and we would never not have those two in the game most of the time. How would we defend or rebound with 3 6'1"guards, Grandison and Kofi on the floor?

Our offensive game plan was actually executed really well, and ball movement/fluidity has actually looked much better. Kofi was a bit off, and at the end of the day we just came up short. Arizona is a damn good team and are coached extremely well. Cut down on the turnovers, get Curbelo healthy and we are in good shape. I-L-L.

So let’s hear it guys. Why did we lose this one? Poor adjustments by Brad? Hosed by the refs? Turnovers? /s

none of the above. We played a great game against a team that was just a little bit greater. Even though this goes as an L, I like a lot of the stuff from this game. Good takeaways to go forward with. Let’s all take a breather (hopefully) for the next few and get revved up for Mizzou!!
Go Illini

Option #1..not sure why its ok for the coach to get a pass when he the team as a whole can not execute in the last two minutes of this game. AZ ran plays and sets that executed down the stretch. Thats a sign of being better prepared and disciplined which is a direct correlation to coaching.

I disagree.

the reason we haven’t been good since Self is because we had one point guard in that time period. dmac. And what do you know. We made the tournament with him.

Point guard is easily the most important position in basketball.

At the margin Curbelo's absence makes a big difference, not only because of his ballhandling and PG skills but because (as BU pointed out in the presser) of his defending, particularly his defensive rebounding.

Alot of bounces went their way, particularly first half, that happens. Alot of no block outs, that can't happen. It will get fixed.

I like our team. They are good and will improve. We really missed Belo tonight. Sooo many turnovers. I would not be afraid to face Az again in the Tourney with a healthy Belo.

#196
Coleman Hawkins has all the talent in the world, but until he starts to play with confidence and aggression he's a liability to the team.

25 points off 16 turnovers. Whether a healthy heady Belo can right this ship is still a mystery. Whether this team can continue to win committing the high number of turnovers is not. We will be either good or very good depending on this being corrected. We can't assume we will make this many 3 pointers against good teams. This was a very talented and good Arizona team. We will see many others. Intensity and focus on all facets of the game for 4o minutes creates champions. We can be but will we?

BS. It's difficult to execute w/o a legitimate PG and we're trying to do that right now. PG is the most important position on the floor. Without a good one, you're going to look disjointed.

The fact of the matter is that Arizona right now is a better, more talented team than us. I'd give them as good a chance to win it all as anyone.
