I find it odd that I can't find discussion on this game on a Michigan message board.
I look at MGoBlog occasionally. They're still riding the high of football season and covering a pretty good hockey team. Hoops has gotten crickets lately. Am confident if the game is announced as "on" they'll quickly churn out a pregame piece with plenty of snark and comments filled with observations that yeah, well, they're kinda good now but as soon as Kofi leaves they'll sink again into the lower circles of BT hell never to return.

It's what they do.

Just is still out on Juwon as a coach. Odds are against him.

He took over program that was
26-12 - sweet 16
33-8 Finals
30-7 Sweet 16
last 3 years under Beilen so not a rebuild like Illinois

Juwon so far
19-12
23-5 elite 8
7-6

he has recruited well but has yet to show he is an elite coach or program builder. He has had his poor moments such as threatening Mark Turgeon during BTT and claiming Univ of Michigan apologized to him about Fab5.

Not many NBA players are successful as college coaches. Different skill set, ridiculous work hours and pay only OK compared to NBA salaries

NBA players who failed as college coaches

Clyde Drexler - Houston 19-39 2 seasons
Dan Majerle - Grand Canyon State (7 years never made big dance)
Mike Dunleavy - Tulane 24-69 3 seasons
Chris Mullin - St John 59-73
Avery Johnson Alabama
Mark Price - Charlotte
Reggie Theus - New Mexico State
Damon Stoudemaire - Pacific
Terry Porter - Portland
Donyell Marshall - Central Connecticut

NBA players who are really struggling

Danny Manning - Maryland interim (fired Wake Forest 78-111)
Penny Hardway - Memphis 9-5 ytd, two NIT appearances in 3 years prior
Patrick Ewing - Georgetown 68-65 in 3.5 years
Jerry Stackhouse - Vanderbuilt 39-42 2.5 years

My dream scenario leading into this game: Michigan pleads for a pause after their Covid, Kevin Warren denies it, makes them play. They have all their starters and important bench members. And we dump another 20 point win on them.

Ahhhh 😁. I hate Michigan
Of course, their fans will then be insufferable on Twitter. The only reason we won, they will say, is because they didn't have their best players, Juwan wasn't feeling well, the referees hate them, Illinois cheated, and all the other usual drivel they spew.

Somewhat OT: You know how the 2005 time just kind of made it their thing to wear orange in almost every single game where they had a choice? We never wore blue once all year (even though we did in ‘04 and ‘06), and we only seemed to wear white when the other team wore red (e.g., the Arizona comeback).

Well, I’d totally support this squad only wearing the orange throwbacks from now on and only wearing the white script throwbacks when the other team wears red. Our throwbacks are approximately 1 million times cooler than our regular uniforms, and we already wear them too often for them to be considered a “special occasion” jersey.

“Somewhat OT” could literally be the name of this message board :)

Would anyone else love seeing the blue script on an orange jersey? Or would the subsequent epicness rip a hole in the space time continuum?

There's also been accusations that their hockey team ducked a good team by blaming COVID earlier this year as well. Like almost blatantly bad. Must be an institutional norm at this point.

It couldn't possibly be Hunter Dickinson with the grudge, hmm?
lol that big meathead hates our guts. Well the feeling is mutual. MUCK FICHIGAN. Illinois should have been at least co Big Ten champions (scUM played less games than us. imo the new BT commissioner is even worse than the previous one and that guy was terrible smh )

Oh well no reason to cry over spilled milk, lets destroy those rodents. MUCK FICHIGAN! Ann Arbor will always be a white trash !!!!!. GO ILLINI

Might be the blue seats/change in setup, but it doesn’t seem like our fans are as good at the “wear orange” assignment. Is there a “Paint the Hall Orange” game picked out this year??
I do miss these days. Had to be an imposing sight for visitors. I think the renovation broke up the stadium a bit with the boxes and suites and the wall behind the Krush, so it no longer looks like a huge unbroken sea of Illini fans. I also remember it being much louder back in the early 2000's. Seems like people stayed on their feet almost the whole game. Now, there are few occasions throughout the game where everyone stands up. Maybe the new seats are just too comfortable.

Of course, maybe my nostalgia is getting the best of me and there's no difference. Would love to see us start painting the hall orange again though!

Anyone know if UM has been able to practice or the extent of their Covid. When we had 10 players out we could not practice. I expect they are in a similar situation since they canceled 2 games

You could list Manning with the first group as well for his stint at Wake Forest

I'd be very pleased to discard the blues permanently and go with the orange block lettering throwbacks from '89, and white and orange script from the late '70s. Period. I can't find color photos of the orange script ones online but here are a couple B&W ones (Levi Cobb stuffing Ronnie Lester & Derek Harper v. IU front and center):

“You can quote me on this….. nobody in the Big Ten, and I mean nobody likes I̶l̶l̶i̶n̶o̶i̶s̶ MICHIGAN.”

Hoping Kofi rests up and is ready to dominate Dickinson on Friday.

I agree on the noise. Even on TV, SFC just sounds way quieter than old videos of 2005 and such. However, I will give us props for this year’s Arizona game, which I was lucky enough to attend. It was legitimately loud and an atmosphere that reminded me of those good old days!

I always listen to the radio feed of Illini games and it sounds very loud to me .....brian B. and Deon T. sometimes have to shout over the crowd noise.....

Not really. In those days, sure we sold out but the court was surrounded by a bunch of blue hairs in A section who complained when Krush stood up in front of them. They also just sat on their hands while dominating the background of the TV cameras (Krush was on the same side of the court as the cameras). The renovation made the fan environment MUCH better. The issue is just that COVID hit right as we got good again. We are selling well again and I think we will be far better than the environment pictured here due to the renovations and the program renaissance.

The hockey situation was ridiculous. On Monday (12/27) they announced they would play Mich Tech on Wednesday (12/29), but not #4 Western Mich on Thursday (12/30) due to "health and welfare protocols"

It's so absurd that it clearly illustrates the need for better oversight and governance. There has to be clear expectations and consequences to be followed. If only there were organizations... yada, yada, yada [insert worn out rant] :)
