A couple of thoughts-First how about Curbelo and BBV. What a performance from both of those guys. Tough to lose, but you aren't going undefeated in the big ten. Great game. Win on Friday and we probably won't move too much rankings wise. What a game between the two best teams in the league. Have a feeling this will propel us to another long winning streak.
Good post. Always tough to control the emotions after a loss. But a lot more positives than negatives today. However we have to find a way to avoid these 5-7 minute lulls on offense game after game. Too much talent on the roster for it to keep happening. Also Luke Goode needs to see the floor more.

The foul on Kofi when Edey fell on top of him was ghastly...........The foul called on DMW was a non contact blown call...............Anybody who watched this game saw how not to ref a game........Trent got called for a foul in one of the overtimes on steffy and no contact ................As a spectator of college BB for over 60 + years I can honestly exclaim that the reffing is getting far worse every year..................One could say that bo and dj bald head have a vendetta against the Illini but they are consistently awful in the non Illini games I've watched them ref....................

What can a fan do about it ??.........................I would like for a petition started and offered to all B1G teams to stop any further reffing by Bo and dj bald head in any B1G games FOR FOREVER and EVER.................................

BBV played the game of his life and solved for me what we will do in future games with big's in foul trouble..........The Illini played their hearts out and it's a shame for a game to be decided by someone not shooting the ball or playing any defense......

BU on radio interview..................

couldn't be happier.......we grew as a team today
the fight of BBV
confidence level without Kofi
we made mistakes and will clean them up
Belo been back in practice only 2 days and his conditioning stinks......20 points and played great
DMW good D on Ivy
good to see the ball go in today
BBV was our igniter
2 heavyweights today
only 8 TO's
didn't think he would play Belo that much
Trent is our heart...........6 assists only 1 TO
Best league in the country.......best coaches .....best players .........no comments on officials to avoid a fine and suspension....................

Classic hard fought game , tainted by 3 blind mice..............................We are still in first place and as BU said . we can't let one loss turn into 2 ........

Illini are tough as nails and will be a much better team with Belo now back and producing............

GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really easy to pin this on officiating, and they certainly didn't help, but we gave up a 17-2 run to end the first half. This was within our grasp despite officiating.
That and both losses at home we had really bad flagrant and technical fouls when we had wrestled away momentum. We have to find a way to keep playing with intensity without that.

Really proud of the fight in our team. Have been critical - and likely will be again at some point this season - but one thing they never do is quit. This game will serve us well later in the year.

And, again, I implore the B10 office to re-evaluate their strategy of getting the absolute most teams in the big dance at the expense of calling games all conference season differently than they are in the tournament and putting said teams at a disadvantage. Twenty plus seasons without a natty isn't a coincidence. I have no faith they even see this as an issue.

I'm not even trippin.

We played terrific.

Also, age + experience is slowly teaching me to remember the larger context of the season in my reactions to each individual game.

In one month, we're not gonna remember this game as the contest in which we got jobbed by an unending chain of suspect calls... We're gonna be talking about this game as the "Return of the Curb", the installation of the final major piece of our 2022 season that turned the Fighting Illini into a Final Four caliber team.
I like the way you think.

Tough one to lose but our prospects moving forward are terrific.

Very similar to the Arizona game in the tactics perspective: we struggled when the opponent multiple good big men, and especially a 7 foot+ center.
But we have demonstrated more efforts. We got a 19-0 run but gave a 37-24 lead away in that game, but we came back from a 24-37 trail after 0-17 in this one. Proud of the team, and we can defeat Purdue in the next matchup, and probably in the BIG championship game.

Fantastic game and what an effort by the guys. Underwood should have some fine Belgian beverages and chocolate m BBV should get some refreshing Belgian beverages sent to his apartment… on January 30 when he turns 21. I loved our heart, hustle, and clutch shooting until the last few FTs.

To weigh in on the key debate:
“Blame it on the officials”? Or
“Can’t blame it on the officials”?

Losses are never just about one thing. In this game there were 4-5 really big calls that went against us. The two most obvious:
- Kofi’s 3rd foul
- Edey mauls BBV, no foul

Those are probably a 3-5 point swing, which in an OT game clearly have an impact. So, sure, you CAN blame the officials in part — although I’m sure neither Underwood nor the team will, since that’s the part over which they have almost zero control.

There were many, many other things we could have done:
- Plummer loses his man for the back-door layup in OT2
- Didn’t adapt well to Edey’s size until into the 2nd half
- Also slow to get the offensive boards up and running. Did we have any 2nd chance points the first half?

I’ll wrap it up with my first point though — great game that has me excited for the rest of the season (especially February 10). Too bad some calls didn’t go our way, but we still had every opportunity to come out with a huge win.
- Kofi will learn from a down game (he always does)
- BBV will get a huge confidence boost (I mean, the dude guards Kofi in practice, it had to translate to a game eventually)
- Plummer knows he can still set the nets on fire
- Curbelo’s back in the mix and looked mostly good — maybe a bit out of control at times, especially that throw away on the loose ball rebound, but his best real game of the year by far.

Go Illini
Played small most of the game so offensive rebounds are impacted - mainly because of fouls but also coach decision.

Yeah, the ref called it on Trent's feet, but in reality Trent went spread eagle to avoid that call and didn't touch SS
and trent and plummer were hit on the arm on 3s today with no call

The lack of consistency was obvious

The other call that pissed me off..we were down i think 4 in the second half..damonte standing straight up..ivey shoulders him and then turns and shoots a fadeaway.......foul on monte, 2 shots

Absolutely. Also in both games, Kofi played poorly. I honestly think he's got a chip on his shoulder about NBA scouting reports and draft projections and let's that get the better of him in some of these big games. He's a lot more out of control when playing bigs that can match his size even though we know he has the post moves. It's like he feels he needs to prove his strength and forgets his skill.

So was Payne. Other than his flagrant, I don't think he did a single thing wrong when he was out there.
Payne was effective with his arms but not his body. BBV did a better job getting low and preventing Williams/Edey from getting the positioning they wanted underneath the basket (at least did as good a job as can be expected with those guys, considering even Kofi couldn't stop them from backing him down).

I was completely wrong re: Curbelo. Did not think we would see him again this season. He is a total difference maker, as we all knew, but he makes us so much more dangerous. Again, Trent, Plummer, BBV, everyone of them has so much heart it is fantastic to watch after way too many years of heartbreaking conference losing seasons. Future is bright.

I love King Kofi but his game is about over powering others bigs. He struggled to do that vs Edey. Kofi is a great college player and I love him on our team. He us what he is and I hope he stays another year. Not so sure about the NBA for him at least not yet.
Sadly, I don't think he has a future in the NBA at all. He is a dominant college player, but his game just doesn't translate. I'm sure he can still earn some good money internationally though.

Plummer has improved a lot on D this year. hope he keeps it up — at some point in late March, he’s gonna make a big defensive stop that he wouldn’t have made today to keep us alive.
