This is one of those rare losses where I’m gonna watch the full Matthew Loves Ball replay multiple times.
That was a very specific and horrifying hobby suggestion.I’ll never understand why people say things like “if we would have [shot better/turned it over less/rebounded] we would have won so complaining about the refs is wrong” or “reffing is really difficult and they’ll never get everything right so complaining about the refs is wrong” and so on. Both of those things are true and also completely unrelated to the fact that the refs frequently impact the outcome of games, so what’s the point? Just, you know, let us be mad about it and go back to making a cardigan out of human hair clippings or whatever other weird thing keeps your boat afloat.
Not sure if they replayed this on Fox, but he got to the floor with the help of Edey's left hand pulling him down. The third foul on Kofi was ridiculous. I believe he was on the floor with a Purdue guy and the Purdue dribbler just tripped over his back.
Unfortunately they believe what they type.......I set a record today by putting the most posters on ignore ever in one day.......if anyone thought the refs had no effect on this game then they are no post mates of mine............Everyone who watches college BB knows a ref will miss one from time to time....it's the blatant missing of numerous calls every game they ref that is so frustrating .....i always ask who the refs are because certain refs WILL impact the game negatively for the Illini........
Larry S.
Bo Boroski
DJ Carstensen
are the most inept refs I have ever seen .....last time i checked and I don't have a link , but I think they make $ 3,000 for every game they ref..........it's about time the B1G and fans got their money's worth......
This was a horrific display of terrible judgment calls that were so awful that if they perform that way in any other job they would have been fired years ago.....
2 of the 3 refs I named above have some shady background baggage so take that into consideration when you former post mates post that the refs didn't impact the game ....they do impact EVERY game as they make the calls and there should be a grading component on every game they call..........
I am very upset and I can't travel to the games and pay mucho $$$ for tickets ....Probably a good thing as I would be booted before the firast media time out........BTW , was that dj bald head ref threatening an Illini fan with ejection if they didn't set down .....That's what brian or deon was saying on the radio feed .........Rabbit ears or guilty conscience ??
I don't from my seat at the game or watching from my couch. I defer to the experienced official who has worked hard over the years to earn a spot on a Big 10 crew. Officials are human and mistakes are made, but only the person on the court with the angle they had on the play can call what they saw.I have never reffed at the college level, just high school, but, I have to ask (based on your deference of this game’s officiating), HOW do you call that foul on DMFW?
I agree. You win home games. Period. For me, a moral victory isn’t good enough when you’re at home and are competing for a conference title. Sure, we played with a lot of heart, but you gotta win games like this. We needed this one to shut up the critics saying we still haven’t beaten a ranked team. Sucks because we easily could have won, but that technical on Payne was killer and Stephanovich hit some ridiculous 3’s.
I am, however, glad to see Curbelo back and playing great.
Part of the reason it just wasn't his day is because the Illini didn't bring the double team to help on defense. Curbelo DID play extremely well, considering how long he'd been sidelined. He was aggressive but also (for the most part) played with discipline.Encouraging performance despite the loss. Feel bad for Kofi, this just wasn't his day.
We are better with Curbelo. Full stop.
That's it, wow ok. Just that simple. Maybe Baylor, Purdue, Michigan St. UCLA, USC and Duke should win their home games too.I agree. You win home games. Period.
He’s not a good one on one defender for whatever reason. He is a good help defender and shot changer. You shouldn’t be, Kofi is not a good defender
Really, we all thought the crowd was a little soft today. I take it you didn't go to Arizona or Michigan games this year? AZ especially was flat out rocking. Just my perspective, I've been to nearly every for last 5+ years. Thought the crowd could've helped them a little more at times today, but fun to see it filled regardless.Probably one of the loudest highest energy game I have ever been to and the refs did their best to kill the vibe. The whole building went nuts when Curbelo scored his first bucket.
Agreed...you bring the double from anywhere but Sasha. That dude is a sniper.Part of the reason it just wasn't his day is because the Illini didn't bring the double team to help on defense. Curbelo DID play extremely well, considering how long he'd been sidelined. He was aggressive but also (for the most part) played with discipline.
Solid post. I don't spend energy getting agitated about officiating, even when it seems biased against my team. It is what it is. As a kid I learned early on the court that the moment I got angry at a call I lost focus and made mistakes. I forced myself to let it go and move on. I let my coach ride the refs and just did what I needed to do. As an adult, either playing or watching games, I'd just shake my head and, in my frustration, remind myself that one generally shouldn't attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.Kind of get a kick out of all the complaining on ref calls. I would bet my life that none of those posts come from anyone who has ever refereed a B1G game between two teams of this ilk. Of course, there never has been a game like this between two teams with this much size, speed, and quickness. It is extremely difficult.
I will say this, you will never see a game where every call is correct, and likely, 99% of us will never understand what the correct calls are. I sure don't, and I have played organized hoops for 35 years, been trained in correct officiating, and even called a few games. I had a friend who was an official and called games in the MVC and B1G for decades. First of all, they all take pride in making the correct call. Secondly, some calls have to be interpreted by what is seen and they can NEVER be seen from all angles by anyone. Finally, timing is critical. They know they miss things....and they know they are affected by crowd noise and momentum. Bottom line, they always make calls in real time by what they see. Replay has helped them get things right in some cases, but will not, at this time, and maybe never, allow that in real time. The only problem I ever have with officials are those who like the spotlight....and those are less and less prevalent as review and renew committees are weeding them out. It is a thankless job, but overall, is filled by a pretty admirable bunch of people.
In every athletic contest, the reality is you have no control over calls by officials. You only control your own effort. Sorry. Coach speak.Because there’s never been a game altered by poor officiating? Got it.
Where’s all the “this team is better without Curbelo” people now?
The old rule was U of I got the homer calls at home and screwed on the road, but I honestly believe I've seen over the last few years that since we haven't been a BIG leader year in and year out until now, it's like we have have to keep winning and THEN they'll give us the 'Bo Ryan at the Kohl Center' benefit of the doubt. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about!Absolutely. And what's worse, this was a home game.
I was an athlete, later a coach (both in much younger days), so I get your point from that perspective. But from the seat of a spectator/fan, if you don’t spit out your beer over a bad call against your team, you must be sans pulse (or beer). In every athletic contest, the reality is you have no control over calls by officials. Here's hoping we win the season series with them, 2 (or 3!) to 1.Great game. The better team lost today. That happens. I'm so proud and impressed by our guys. We played 29 minutes without our All American. And Purdue still needed 2OT's and 3 referees to beat us.
Assembly Hall was as electric as it's been in a long long time. Let's make that the norm.
Curbelo was our MVP and didn't even need to make a 3 to impact the game. Hopefully that quiets the posters who used him as a punching bag the last two months.
Looking forward to the revenge game.
I get upset with calls too. I’ve found this approach saves my sanity.I was an athlete, later a coach (both in much younger days), so I get your point from that perspective. How about from the tip of your finger to your shoulder. The one everyone’s complaining about on twitter? Hand is part of the ball, that’s not a foul.
But they do call that a lot. Another 40/60.
