Travis Steele fired at Xavier.

Maybe Samscum can pick up Xavier’s best player/recruit by hiring Steele to his staff.
After all, history does tend to repeat…

Lets put some logic here. Brad is 58 years old. He has built and will keep a top 10 program here. He loves it here and he loves the situation, pay wise and his boss.; I know iKSU is home for him but he would have to start over and rebuild. Does he want to do that or does he want to continue here and possibly win a championship? He is making very good money and I cannot imagine that KSU has the resources to pay him and play the huge buy out. I bet Josh has already talked to him about it knowing that Weber was going to retire soon. I think KSU is wishful thinking here. They may go after the S Dakota St coach or Murray Stats HC. Why would Brad want to start over?
I think KSU has to "pull out all the stops," in at least a somewhat credible way, to get Brad in order to appease their boosters that they did all they could. I think that's all this is. I have a feeling they're just doing what they have to do so that when they hire somebody more realistic they can at least tell their boosters "we offered X, Y and Z, and had phone conversations with him on [insert dates] and had [insert name of booster] badger him some more on [insert date] and he still said no!" I would be shocked if BU went for the reasons you outline in your post. I can't imagine he'd want to start a rebuild when he's just at the fun part of this rebuild, i.e. the part where you enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I'm not worried about KSU. Maybe, one day, towards the end of his career, I could see him making a pit stop, just to put a nice bow on his career. KSU is two levels below Illinois. They aren't even in the same conversation with the schools in their own state. He's not dumb. He has established a program at Illinois, he's in one of the prime recruiting area in the country, he's established pipelines, he has great recruiting classes stacked, he's one of the top 15(or 10) highest paid coaches in the country, he's got an huge buyout because they just extended his contract in the fall and Whitman will match or exceed any other offer. BU loves his alma mater, as well he should. He's not going to blow up his career over it however.

Now, if it were Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, UNC....I'd have my ears perked up. KSU is ridiculous.
I am not worried either. If I have any worry, it's Kansas. But by the time Bill gets fired, Brad is probably too old for that job.

Yeah, Matt Doherty…that was a failed experiment.
Best thing that Doherty did in three years at UNC was getting into a fight with then-Duke assistant Chris Collins in the middle of a game.

Collins will return to Northwestern, but (from the sounds of it) likely has to shake up the staff.

They're firing the pitching coach. Works every time.

White was fine but the trajectory at Florida was not great. His best season was his 2nd and since then he has a 49-39 conference record, which is, again, fine, but not great. He hasn't had a 20 win season since 2018-2019 and that year he went 9-9 in conference and finished 8th in the SEC. I don't think this warrants him having been on the hotseat just yet, but I think the program was not heading in the right direction.
I don't hate this type of move for a high-major with a reasonable track record of success. I think Florida has to decide if they're going to be ok being the type of program that usually gets into the tournament, occasionally gets to the second weekend, and makes a Final Four once in a blue moon, or if they want to try and grab the brass ring. I can't find fault in their decision either way, to be honest with you.

Kenny Payne officially to Louisville
I thought Orlando was the one who developed a reputation as someone who helped improve a number of post players?!?

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...-kenny-payne-men-basketball-coach-sources-say

Payne started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Oregon before spending a decade as an assistant coach under John Calipari at Kentucky. He consistently helped land elite recruiting classes, with Kentucky finishing with the No. 1 recruiting class in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2020. Payne also developed a reputation as someone who helped improve a number of post players during his time in Lexington.

Another ex NBA player who is going to crash and burn as college coach.

Just like

Chris Mullin Clyde Drexler, Reggie Theus, Dan Majerle, Danny Manning, Jerry Stackhouse Michael Dunleavy ....

Soon to be fired

Patrick Ewing, Penny Hardaway, Juwan Howard.

There is much more to college coaching than recruiting.

From the tone of their AD, it is unlikely Underwood is a realistic choice. Their football HC is paid at $3.5M per and Brad at $4.1M. They might need to reconstruct their football HC's contract for Brad to happen. Jk.

BTW, I love Josh's approach. Paying top HCs top dollars. Bret's credential, arguably, was not as good as Brad's at the time but for us, he was arguably a top candidate. Paying him $4.2M per might seem ridiculous but nobody would say we are cheap. Also who says money cannot buy loyalty?
Yep, put most simply … we want coaches, players and fans to think of Illinois as a program with deep pockets and no shyness for digging into the war chest if it means helping Illini sports thrive. I remember people complaining about Underwood’s, Lovie’s and Bielema’s salaries … I say to them we are not a mom and pop shop, we’re the sole major state school in one of the biggest states in the country. It made me so happy to see a few KSU posts saying they “likely could never match what Illinois could offer.” Never thought I’d here that back in the day! Welcome change.

Would Michigan or Arizona or Syracuse or OSU lose a coach to Kansas? I’m guessing no, and we shouldn’t either! In the event that’s a thing, literally break the bank to make a statement that this isn’t a stepping stone job.

Most of those guys had significantly more decorated careers as players, and very little actual coaching experience. (particularly in the NCAA)

They were relying on notoriety to carry their recruiting, and talent to make them successful. Payne spent 16 years as a high major assistant, after a brief NBA career. He should be much better prepared for this than most of those guys.

Another reminder of the incredible string of self-righteous pussies that Coach K, the “leader of men” produced during his tenure. He kept most of them close to him as assistant coaches. It makes one wonder what they had to do to get the job.

big jump from great recruiter to great head coach

Orlando Antigua HC record @ S Florida

9-23
8-25
6-7 fired

Payne went back to NBA after 10 years under Calipari

Calipari coaching tree

Bill Bayno UNLV - fired for recruiting violations
Tony Barbee Auburn - fired after 4 seasons
Bruiser Flint - fired at UMASS for recruiting violations, 15 years at Drexel
Josh Pastner 7 years at Memphis , 6 years at G Tech 1 NCAA bid NCAA violations
Orlando Antigua - USF fired after 2 years NCAA violations and bad record
Kenny Payne - ?????

Only Josh Pastner has had any success and he is on hot seat at G Tech. Not sure why people want Kenny Payne so bad,

My only concern about the Underwood to KSU talk is that it is happening during the tournament. With the way the Illini ended the season, they don't need any distractions. Underwood needs to make a statement, at least reassure the players that it isn't going to happen. Unless he's listening to KSU boosters, then just get it over with and move on.

I'm pretty sure he addressed this when he was asked on Selection Sunday. I have to agree. It was as firm an answer he could give without kicking off a thousand talking heads parsing out the response for hidden messages.

Southeastern Conference basketball gets more cutthroat with each passing season.
Every SEC school wants an NCAA Tournament-caliber program, but only six teams made it to the Big Dance this year. So the league is experiencing a different sort of March Madness as its schools pour even more into basketball.
“We can talk about all the other stuff,” SEC basketball adviser Mike Tranghese said earlier this year, “but it’s hiring good coaches that can get players.”
With that in mind, Georgia has made a coaching change, and Missouri, LSU, Florida and South Carolina are doing the same. Mississippi State may make a switch too.

The fierce on-court battle has shifted to an expensive fight over new leadership. This season, the SEC had five of the top 13 highest-paid coaches in the country, according to USA Today, with 12 of the league’s public-school coaches earning $3 million or more.
Prices will only go up. Missouri faces heavy competition for its hire, so athletics director Desiree Reed-Francois and Co. must be aggressive.

SEC mainly , but good info nevertheless.......................

Travis Steele fired at Xavier.

So the powers-that-be were frustrated
with consecutive mid-late season collapses
and they decide to pink slip the guy…cool.
Missing out on the BIG dance 2 years running and winding up in the Loser’s Tournament is bad for business and pre$tige. Therefore, Steele must go…okay fine, I’m with ya so far…

But, hey let’s wait till we’re in like the second game of the NIT and axe him then…huh?

I just don’t understand the timing of that firing all. How about:

1.)Wait till the end of the season. That’s standard practice, amirite?I’m not privy to the inner workings of Xavier U. But I see no reason why that could/should not have occurred in this case.
2.) Fire him before the NIT starts at least. Imagine you’re a player that has represented your school for 3 years and you’re competing in your last college BB tournament. and they pull this crap?
3.) This isn’t ideal either, but firing him mid-season would have been preferable; I would think. Surely there was a point somewhere during the season they could of made it happen. And, that would have made a lot more sense than this.

TRAVIS STEELE sounds more like a porn star or a professional wrestler anyway…he’ll be just fine.
