Southeastern Conference basketball gets more cutthroat with each passing season.
Every SEC school wants an NCAA Tournament-caliber program, but only six teams made it to the Big Dance this year. So the league is experiencing a different sort of March Madness as its schools pour even more into basketball.
“We can talk about all the other stuff,” SEC basketball adviser Mike Tranghese said earlier this year, “but it’s hiring good coaches that can get players.”
With that in mind, Georgia has made a coaching change, and Missouri, LSU, Florida and South Carolina are doing the same. Mississippi State may make a switch too.
The fierce on-court battle has shifted to an expensive fight over new leadership. This season, the SEC had five of the top 13 highest-paid coaches in the country, according to USA Today, with 12 of the league’s public-school coaches earning $3 million or more.
Prices will only go up. Missouri faces heavy competition for its hire, so athletics director Desiree Reed-Francois and Co. must be aggressive.
