So the powers-that-be were frustrated
with consecutive mid-late season collapses
and they decide to pink slip the guy…cool.
Missing out on the BIG dance 2 years running and winding up in the Loser’s Tournament is bad for business and pre$tige. Therefore, Steele must go…okay fine, I’m with ya so far…

But, hey let’s wait till we’re in like the second game of the NIT and axe him then…huh?

I just don’t understand the timing of that firing all. How about:

1.)Wait till the end of the season. That’s standard practice, amirite?I’m not privy to the inner workings of Xavier U. But I see no reason why that could/should not have occurred in this case.
2.) Fire him before the NIT starts at least. Imagine you’re a player that has represented your school for 3 years and you’re competing in your last college BB tournament. and they pull this crap?
3.) This isn’t ideal either, but firing him mid-season would have been preferable; I would think. Surely there was a point somewhere during the season they could of made it happen. And, that would have made a lot more sense than this.

TRAVIS STEELE sounds more like a porn star or a professional wrestler anyway…he’ll be just fine.
I wonder if they've already decided on the replacement and want to lock him in before the carousel is up to full speed.

Yep, put most simply … we want coaches, players and fans to think of Illinois as a program with deep pockets and no shyness for digging into the war chest if it means helping Illini sports thrive. I remember people complaining about Underwood’s, Lovie’s and Bielema’s salaries … I say to them we are not a mom and pop shop, we’re the sole major state school in one of the biggest states in the country. It made me so happy to see a few KSU posts saying they “likely could never match what Illinois could offer.” Never thought I’d here that back in the day! Welcome change.
Digging deep into the war chest is probably discouraging several schools from trying to make a run to poach Underwood this year and the coming years.

Open jobs - Xavier, Missouri, Florida, South Carolina, U Mass LSU
Florida would have highest expectations since they have made NCCA 5 of past 7 years.

Xavier has been proving ground for many coaches

Pete Gillen 6/9 NCAA -> Providence
Skip Prosser 4/7 NCAA -> Wake Forest
Thad Matta 3/3 NCAA -> Ohio State
Sean Miller 4/5 NCAA -> AZ
Chris Mack 5/5 NCAA> Louisville
Larry Steele 0/4 NCAA fired

If I was young up and coming coach I would think the Xavier would be best chance of success. However I am sure Florida and LSU would pay more money.
Missouri needs to hire somebody with pre Illinois profile like Brad Underwood and be patient.
Florida can chase the next hot young coach. Mike White was not a failure - just decided to leave.
LSU will pay big bucks for somebody to come in.

I could see LSU trying to poach somebody like Nate Oates from Bama.

Word I got was that Miller has offer from SC on the table… Used it as leverage to get Xavier to make the move sooner. He wants to be at Xavier.
Which Miller? They might be both collecting unemployment right now. My guess it is Sean then Archie is still jobless.

Other famous Millers

Reggie Miller (would be useful to our team playing)
Cheryl Miller (sister)
Shannon Miller (Olympic gymnast)
Mike Miller (long NBA career see Reggie)
Arthur Miller (playwright, married to Marilyn Monroe

Honestly I am not sure I would hire any to coach my basketball team.

Since Arthur Miller is dead, I think that's a definite rule out.
There's Ralph Miller, former coach of Iowa, that led the Squawks to a 100+ point per game average in 1970. Sadly, also deceased.

I mean, Cheryl Miller is one of the greatest female basketball players of all time (way better than Reggie was) and a former coach/GM of the Phoenix Mercury. Not that I think she should be hired by anyone as I believe she's retired, but you could obviously do way, way worse. And she at least deserves a better description than "sister."

Mitch could out direct all of them....plus he had the bouncing ball, so it's a natural.
