2021-22 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

They hired a guy with no experience because he is a local legend. He cheated to get those stud recruits, and now that everyone can pay players, recruiting doesn't look so promising. They ran a potential Hall of Fame coach in Tubby Smith out after 2 years. Memphis did this themselves.

Others are right. They need to bring in an old experienced guy to be the actual coach and let Penny be the figurehead, or he's got to go. His record has got 1 game worse each year, despite a ton of talent. No NCAA tournament appearances. If they want to win, they should probably find a coach that knows what he's doing.

The recruiting will be interesting. Their 2022 class is one guy ranked over 200. Looking at their 2023 prospects, it looks like they're in on a lot of 5 star guys but may realistically get 1 at best. After that, it could be another bad class. Penny's coaching without an extreme talent advantage is going to create some pretty ugly records.
You said they need to bring in an old experienced guy to be the actual coach....like Larry Brown?!?! One of his assistants?!?!

Howland took UCLA to big dance 6 out of 10 years including 2 Final Four and 1 NCAA title game. Fired for boring style of basketball.

Missippi State 7 years 2 NCAA bids. It does matter where you coach.

Not sure who can do better for KY in this one and done NIL environment.

Jay Wright, Chris Beard, Scott Drew are not going to Lexington.

Brad does not have the resume yet. When KY took Billy Gillepsie after just 2 years at UTEP and 3 years at Texas A&M he crash and burned badly. The pressure to win every year at KY is ridiculous. They ran Tubbie Smith out of town.

3 years as assistant at Auburn under Pearl
2 years as assistant at SF
3 years as HC at SF 22-12, 11-14, 24-10 NCAA WCC with Gonzaga and BYU

Sounds like John Groce redux. Not impressed with hire.

Self was also "in it for the long haul."

Coaches are 100% committed to their current job until they leave for the next job.

That said, I see BU to KSU as extremely unlikely, >1%
How true......All the new coaches should make a public announcement.." OK, I"ll take the job until something a little better opens up."

I think all this talk about KSU and Underwood is out there to rattle Illinois in the tournament. Why? Who knows. Why does so-called referee and wannabe sheriff Larry hate us, and some of his other ref-pals, too? Why did " he who runs like tyrannasaurus rex" Dickinson say "everybody hates Illinois"? Why isn't Kofi on the 10-best list that annoying Bilas put out? Why did we lose to Loyola last year and Ohio State this year and Ohio State just beat Loyala big-time in this year's tournament? It is said that Sister jean is 102 and still a Loyola cheerleader; is this true? Questions, no answers. It is Illinois versus the cosmos and Illinois MUST win!! Go Illini!
One suggestion for Underwood: I love how Bielema ends every interview with "I-L-L" and wish Underwood would take that up, too. In fact, I'd really like to see and hear more "loyalty to Illinois" expressed from team and coaches, some occasional mention of the school. Trent, at least, does express his gratitude to "Illini Nation" which is good (and the appreciation is returned to him), but it would warm the alums hearts to hear now and then "I love Illinois...." or "I love this school...."
I-L-L....!!!!

Is this something we should be talking about?

"A majority of the K-State nation wants former Kansas State player and assistant coach — and native of McPherson, Kansas — Brad Underwood to come home as the new coach. There is plenty of talk in fan circles, and more specifically in big donor circles, that a deal is basically done as soon as Underwood’s Illinois team is finished playing in this NCAA Tournament."

It is when you only paste a portion of the article. If you read the entire thing it states that Underwood is happy with his bosses and KSU will need to raise money to buyout Underwood from his current contract.

I can't think about losing BU right now. The tourney is stressful enough by itself. That said, it sounds like if we keep winning, KSU will be forced to pull the trigger elsewhere. Sounds good to me. Survive and advance.

It’s ok bc it’s actually been the Coach K buys land in Mahomet tour all year.

They’re not the only delusional fan base out there

Let me re-word my question: should we be talking about the fact that KSU (it's fans?) and its boosters are talking about Underwood as a legitimate candidate for their head coaching vacancy?
