if you can't do it, defenses sag on you and make it harder for you to score in other ways
True, but as others have pointed out, he shot over 30% his freshman year. So not unreasonable to think he might improve from last year.

I knew nothing about him before he was just mentioned, but just playing devil's advocate for why I can see the staff being interested in him. Especially if he is being brought in as a likely bench guy and not a for sure starter.

Assuming we get Skyy and TSJ, where is Brazile when it comes to likelihood or priority versus Miller or Williams?
Brazile imo depends on Kofi. If Kofi is back, I would expect the additions to be something like: TSJ, Skyy, and Williams. Williams would be a depth piece and the other two would start.
Starting lineup would look like:
Skyy
TSJ
RJ
Coleman
Kofi
Bench:
Williams
Epps
Rodgers (he will likely play big minutes off the bench)
Goode
Dain

I think he’s a take now. 6’5 great defender, and great floor general. Hit or miss shooting but if you have 4 other scorers on the court then it’s fine.
I have no problem with the take if he is not your 30-35 MPG guy and he is ok with that role coming in. You can only have a few non-shooters in your lineup but 6'5" athlete with PG handle and excellent defense is a very nice start.

Imagine comparing a players fg% who shoots 2/3rds of his shots 3s. Williams averaged less than a point per shot attempt last year. 2 fts = about 1 shot attempt. He has potential though but to say he was a decent scorer last year is insane
Effective FG% 45% vs Frazier 50%. Difference? Yes. PER actually higher than Trent. I love Trent as much as anyone on the court, but my point here is he’s closer to a Frazier replacement with size than a DMW replacement. And he shot 32% from 3 as a freshman last year. If he can get anywhere close to that it’s all you need off the bench. Nobody will replace those guys as leaders, but a guy like that off the bench would be awesome to have.

So you are saying you wouldn't prefer someone who could shoot it don't care if they shoot below 30 percent from 3? I am not. Clearly there are more ways to score but I'm tired of our guys being dared to shoot because they aren't efficient from outside. I saw enough of that with Jalen Tate and vs Houston recently.
That is not even close to what I said. Don't put words in my mouth.

As I said on my post above, I'm just arguing that I can see why the staff may be interested. Sure, if you can get someone better, go do it. But that possibility is no reason to not show interest in other players.

The lack of Podz off the bench is interesting? Should we read anything into that?

I still think his upside is tremendous.

can't help but notice no Harris, BBV, Lieb, Payne,, or Podz. We know Harris is in so my rosterlator tells me there are two slots for either BBV, Lieb, Payne, or Podz.

@illini0440 @Indy Illini Fan @LvilleILL Any idea why Illinois hasn't pursued Antonio Reeves? Duke, UK, and KU are all after him so clearly the bluebloods value his talent.

Is our relationship with Simeon post-THT so bad that he wouldn't hold interest in coming here?
Williams went to Simeon also & they apparently are pursuing him. They need to mend that relationship for the future.

I don't think BBV would've been heading out to recruit TSJ with Kofi if he was planning on hitting the portal anytime soon.
He seems like a culture guy and he's provided good spot minutes backing up KC. I think he stays.
Never pass up a trip to Chicago...but agree.

Trent & Damonte. Those super senior provider great moments, defense, leadership, experience & some three point shooting. They also took a very karge chunk of minutes that would have gone to developing the freshmen. Podz got less minutes because of them. Hell BBV played more than Podz.

If we bring in 3 guards/wings in addition to Epps, Harris, and Rodgers and Goode and RJ both stay, would you stick around if you were Podz.

We all look through a lens of what is best for the team. These players look through the lens of what is best for them. And that would be a lot of competition to fight through. In situations like that, I think transfers make sense and you wish the guy the best. I just hope if Podz does transfer it is not to Wisconsin or Iowa.

I read great defender without needing to depend on his offense? Did I miss something?

DMFW played almost every position so I was only thinking defense and leadership.
Monte PF, J Williams point guard, floor general, good in pick in roll and in transition. One of the top Iso defenders in the nation last year. I love Trent but he shot 32% from three last year and no one is saying anything about it and that's essentially who J Williams will replace....not Monte.

going off this....if you add Skyy you need a defensive stopper at guard even if he is coming off the bench..

Depending on what happens with Podz, a guard rotation of Clark (6'3), Epps (6'2), TSJ (6'6), Williams (6'5), makes us a look a lot more like teams that play deep into March. It's okay to have some big guards that aren't all knockdown shooters.

Hell, when our "knockdown" shooters last year went cold, they were practically worthless on the floor. Not the case with a guy like Williams.
Having guards over 6' 4" that are knock down shooters, handlers, and defenders is even better. Maybe just my thing, but I would not recruit ANY guard who can't shoot 35% from the arc. That aspect is critical in today's game and the reason for so many upsets in the dance.

Now, guards that can't or even won't defend is even more important. I will likely never form a solid opinion of Plummer's value to the 22 Illini. What an enigma. When he was hot, he could score 12 pts. in 3 min. or less. Then he would go to the other end and get posted by a big guard or ball screened onto a 7' center. Unfortunately, the end fact was a wash....but watching him hit threes in a heart beat was certainly exciting. Same goes for Curbelo. I think Brad is ready to let go of the <6' guard experience.

Gotcha...thanks for the clarification. My comment wasn't really addressing him as a direct replacement....just the type of player. Long defender and leadership.
I like the PG aspect of him though. Good depth.

Yes I don't think you see big minutes from Williams if he comes here. I also think you'll see more 20-30 minutes a game from everyone next year. No one playing the 35+ all the time like some did this year.

This is a good thing. Trent was absolutely shot by the end of the year. Playing 35+ minutes on one leg, one shoulder, and one eye. Absolute warrior. Deserved to go out better, but it's not a shock at how the year ended for him.

(All the while exerting 110% on the defensive end every possession)
