Just to make sure I'm understanding everything correctly, general gossip is there's a rumored announcement by TSJ upcoming... possibly today. But source isn't reliable and neither has his recruitment so who knows.

However, I'm pretty sure @LvilleILL commented that he was referencing to something different than TSJ and that's to be announced today. And, this may have more legs/reliable?

Do I have this right?

Man I really want us to get some big targets and finish the year ranked again. That’s how you go from “oh yeah that’s a team that was competitive when Ayo and Kofi were there” to “oh yeah that’s a good program that’ll probably always be pretty good for the foreseeable future”

But at same time can’t put too much pressure onto next season, a lot of promising young guys that should make Illinois really good in a few years as long as nobody panics… thats how fanbases grow toxic.

That's what I read

with all the TSJ talk over the past few months, can’t help but think that in the future of college basketball, the amount of toxic “camps” associated with high profile players will only grow. Might as well get some practice and get used to them

RJ will be getting 30 MPG next year regardless of who is brought in. This is his team now.

It's everyone else whose playing time will be affected as BU and co continue to round out the roster.
I suppose it is between RJ and Skyy. Am I right?

Same amount of camps but they'll just linger longer so coaches will have to spend more time dealing with them. Sounds exhausting for everyone.

It's the wild west right now. I would assume standard operating procedures will develop with time, so hopefully things will become more predictable, but people will always be messy.

Dip your nuggets in my staff source sauce.
It’s not like it’s a fake account, he has actual followers. He is a journalist and likely has some connections to our program. Wischnowski may or may not be accurate in his prediction, but he’s not “reading tweets just like everyone else.”
Is that right? Where is he currently a journalist?

It probably isn't, but as with any brand new thing, it's going to be overutilized until everyone settles into a more sustainable new normal. In my opinion, NIL will actually help stabilize this because the market value of a player will be at least partially tied to team loyalty. Mercenaries don't move product like a multi-year player with a connection to fans. That combined with the fact that a certain number of players will be left teamless will probably slow things down in the coming years.

I tried to make this point a few days ago. Constant player movement is not good for maintaining what college sports is. Which is that fan connection. I was told that people need to stop rooting for individual players and deal with it. Oh, and that the 3 point line had more of an impact than this portal has had. Don't think they understood what I was saying.

Maybe you are right and it will even itself out, but I doubt these kids that have been told what they want to hear their whole lives in AAU will stop believing their handlers any time soon. And this chaos is not good for the game. (and who we happen to sign today....or whenever... does not change that). I think NIL is here to stay and good for the kids. The numbers of players who wind up no where, the tone in Underwood's voice in his recent interview, and the negative impact on fan connection shows that the free transfer rule is not good for the sport. These two together are just bad.

His resume is right on his twitter handle…. I’m not sure what he is doing for work right now, but having worked at CBS, Chicago Tribune, and the News Gazette qualified him as a journalist. I assume he has more connections than your average fan on a message board.

What would this team be ranked if we brought in:
Ramy
TSJ
Manny Bates

I would think about the 15-20 range.

So basically, 1/3rd of the players in D1 basketball have entered the transfer portal. That seems unsustainable on a year to year basis.

Yes, it’s sustainable.

The ultimate end to this is that everyone enters the Portal every year. But that would never happen.

Now, plenty of guys are happy right where they are. Let’s say half of all players. That leaves one-half in play that move around. And that’s OK because they should have that right as quasi-independent contractors selling a skill.

It could even get to the point of the old playing ‘Shirts vs. Skins’ games where guys show up and choose up sides and then grab the ball and get to it.

It’s still basketball. It’s still being fans of the Orange and Blue regardless who is wearing the u’nees.

This is actually more exciting for fans because you have a greater chance each season to fill holes on your team and get good. Of course, it could go the other way... but NOT if you’re running a good program and guys want to come to play for you.

As the seasons move along, everyone will get more used to this and it won't seem like such a big change after awhile.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict a James Brown commitment.
