Since the NCAA already has a ton of foolish laws/rules, I think they should pass one for these types of announcements or situations. Something along the lines that commitments, transfers, etc.. have to be announced between the hours of 11AM-2PM (CST).

Edited for Time Zone.

So basically, 1/3rd of the players in D1 basketball have entered the transfer portal. That seems unsustainable on a year to year basis.
I agree to an extent. I really thought the numbers would be down this year. And they are, but not by much. Of course you have to remember there were roughly 1000 player per year before the “no sit” rule was put in place. So there seem to be a lot of unhappy BB campers.

Maybe you are right and it will even itself out, but I doubt these kids that have been told what they want to hear their whole lives in AAU will stop believing their handlers any time soon.
The coaches that are recruiting them can take some of this blame as well. Let's be real, it's not like they're being 100% transparent with what they can bring to the table when they're being recruited. There is a lot that is embellished to get them to sign. Unless you're a blue blood, kids don't have the innate desire to play for a specific school. I knew a former 4 star recruit that thought he was going to land at Kansas since he showed so much potential early on but all the visits and coach speak got to his head.

I tried to make this point a few days ago. Constant player movement is not good for maintaining what college sports is. Which is that fan connection. I was told that people need to stop rooting for individual players and deal with it. Oh, and that the 3 point line had more of an impact than this portal has had. Don't think they understood what I was saying.

Maybe you are right and it will even itself out, but I doubt these kids that have been told what they want to hear their whole lives in AAU will stop believing their handlers any time soon. And this chaos is not good for the game. (and who we happen to sign today....or whenever... does not change that). I think NIL is here to stay and good for the kids. The numbers of players who wind up no where, the tone in Underwood's voice in his recent interview, and the negative impact on fan connection shows that the free transfer rule is not good for the sport. These two together are just bad.
I don't necessarily disagree. I just suspect that the transfer market, like any market, will come to an equilibrium that is more sustainable based solely on its own internal forces. Having that many players left holding the bag is going to send a message to others contemplating a transfer in the future and change their decision calculus. I think the market will still be lively but not as ridiculous as it is today. In the process of finding that equilibrium, though, some kids are going to get left behind for taking that risk.

What would this team be ranked if we brought in:
Ramy
TSJ
Manny Bates

I would think about the 15-20 range.
I doubt we will be ranked at all preseason no matter who we bring in through the portal given our number of departures. I imagine most will put us around 7th or 8th in the B10 next year. Not everyone follows our squad. If we pull some upsets in Vegas while I'm out there that should change that though! That's what I'm hoping for. It will make the trip even more enjoyable.

Let's do some damage in the portal and then maybe we could be ranked preseason but I doubt it. That really means diddly anyway. Where were Iowa and the Badgers picked? They were two of the better teams in the league this year. Let's just win and it will work out.

Exciting times.

Bad for coaches is they have to recruit 7/24 year around now but since Brad gets $5M per year and assistants get +$400k I don't see how they can complain. Anybody making that kind of salary is going to have to pay a heavy price.

Assuming we don't lose any more players I am excited about our team. It is very young but has great talent and athleticism. Without Kofi it might be challenging to stop Dickinson and Edey in the paint.

I have to believe we will add at least two upperclassmen from transfer portal

My wish list

- Sr PG
- Sr Center

with 1300 kids available I am sure we can get two.

The question is whether they will be Alphonso Plummer or Mark Alstork. Sam McClaurin or Mike Thorne.

I have a very hard time seeing this considering we have almost no scoring and only one starter coming back.
At the risk of having this post moved to the "Illini Basketball 2022-2023" thread:
I don't think the bolded part of the statement is correct. True, we lost a lot of our scoring, but that doesn't mean we don't have any to step in and replace it. Obviously a lot of those guys will be in "prove it" mode and the season will start with a lot of uncertainty around our team given the roster turnover. But I really feel that the biggest question for us will be whether or not the team jells quickly enough to ride to a high seed or struggled out the gate with so many new faces and ends up with a middle seed.

Obviously we could still make some real moves in the transfer portal as well. We have open roster spots.
