Us waiting for news
I agree to an extent. I really thought the numbers would be down this year. And they are, but not by much. Of course you have to remember there were roughly 1000 player per year before the “no sit” rule was put in place. So there seem to be a lot of unhappy BB campers. So basically, 1/3rd of the players in D1 basketball have entered the transfer portal. That seems unsustainable on a year to year basis.
@PizzaHutParkingLot Can I borrow your parking lot?
Bates can’t and isn’t happening according to @illini0440What would this team be ranked if we brought in:
Ramy
TSJ
Manny Bates
I would think about the 15-20 range.
The coaches that are recruiting them can take some of this blame as well. Let's be real, it's not like they're being 100% transparent with what they can bring to the table when they're being recruited. There is a lot that is embellished to get them to sign. Unless you're a blue blood, kids don't have the innate desire to play for a specific school. I knew a former 4 star recruit that thought he was going to land at Kansas since he showed so much potential early on but all the visits and coach speak got to his head.Maybe you are right and it will even itself out, but I doubt these kids that have been told what they want to hear their whole lives in AAU will stop believing their handlers any time soon.
I'm guessing a Nojus commitment
Are we targeting any big men?
I don't necessarily disagree. I just suspect that the transfer market, like any market, will come to an equilibrium that is more sustainable based solely on its own internal forces. Having that many players left holding the bag is going to send a message to others contemplating a transfer in the future and change their decision calculus. I think the market will still be lively but not as ridiculous as it is today. In the process of finding that equilibrium, though, some kids are going to get left behind for taking that risk.I tried to make this point a few days ago. Constant player movement is not good for maintaining what college sports is. Which is that fan connection. I was told that people need to stop rooting for individual players and deal with it. Oh, and that the 3 point line had more of an impact than this portal has had. Don't think they understood what I was saying.
Maybe you are right and it will even itself out, but I doubt these kids that have been told what they want to hear their whole lives in AAU will stop believing their handlers any time soon. And this chaos is not good for the game. (and who we happen to sign today....or whenever... does not change that). I think NIL is here to stay and good for the kids. The numbers of players who wind up no where, the tone in Underwood's voice in his recent interview, and the negative impact on fan connection shows that the free transfer rule is not good for the sport. These two together are just bad.
I’m sure they areAre we targeting any big men?
I think we are already in that range. What would this team be ranked if we brought in:

Trying mightily not to do this. And starting around lunch I have wall to wall meetings until 5, so I'll be forced to check less: more like once every 10 minutes instead of every 5.
FIFYI'm guessing a No commitment
I doubt we will be ranked at all preseason no matter who we bring in through the portal given our number of departures. I imagine most will put us around 7th or 8th in the B10 next year. Not everyone follows our squad. If we pull some upsets in Vegas while I'm out there that should change that though! That's what I'm hoping for. It will make the trip even more enjoyable. What would this team be ranked if we brought in:

I have a very hard time seeing this considering we have almost no scoring and only one starter coming back.I think we are already in that range.
At the risk of having this post moved to the "Illini Basketball 2022-2023" thread:I have a very hard time seeing this considering we have almost no scoring and only one starter coming back.
