It's a terrible attitude is what it is. Just reflective of this new attitude of college sports apparently. I guess its just being "too outdated" to have loyalty to your players anymore? Its actually kind of pathetic and one more sign that this new era of college sports is headed in the wrong direction..
Anyways, I for one assume its going to be Lieb. He might have had some hope that the center ranks were going to be thin enough for him to get a bit more time. He may now know otherwise and wants to go play more.
As for Hawkins. I don't know why there is this assumption that Nance would even be an upgrade. Nance got a ton more minutes, took a lot more shots, and actually had plays run through him. Hawkins didn't have any of that last year. Its a pretty big gamble to say Hawkins upside doesn't pass Nance up sooner than later. I also did not watch a lot of Northwestern basketball but many of the times I did watch Nance seemed to be out of the game at crucial times. Not sure if that was common or I happened to catch it on those times. Even better idea than having to choose is they play together. Dainja off the bench wouldn't ruffle any feathers and puts two versatile upperclass big men on the floor to start. Seems like an easy sell

I sure hope not. I understood when Podz and AC left, but Hawk is one I wanted to see be the next one to come up through the program and get to the next level.
Man this is crazy.
Why should a fanbase have loyalty to a player that isnt loyal to his team? That is the new era of college basketball now for the most part. Not saying I wont check up on Hawkins wherever he lands, but if he or any other player hits the transfer portal when they are slated to be a starter then Im not going to have the same attitude towards them compared to a player that finished their career at Illinois.
I really like CoHawk's game and hope his possible wavering isn't forcing us to open more doors.

Nance is much better at pretty much everything. You’re being sentimental and nostalgic.
Coleman is a kid who is outside the top 150 and couldn’t beat out Damonte Williams in the depth chart. Furthermore looks like he took some shots at coach during his last interview. No reason for us to pump the brake on the program due to some sentimentalities for a player some fans have.
I want to win. I want Illinois to be the top 15 program we all agree that it is. Winning requires we get the best possible talent we can get. Settling for lesser talent when you can get better talent is a looser mentality and it’s quick route to the bottom of the Big Ten in the hyper competitive league of collegiate athletics.
Thank god Whitman and Underwood get it.

Who's to say players of the past would have stayed "loyal" if they had the 1 free "no sit transfer" rule.
A player leaving because the coaches bring in guys specifically to take his place isn't disloyalty. Its recognizing they don't respect him. That is 100% not how you should treat your players.
And if that is the "new era" of college basketball then I guarantee you that college basketball will go down in popularity. A large number of fans(and donors) are not going to tune in to watch whatever group of mercenaries a team brings in each year. You can say that's just the way it is, but that doesn't excuse it.

So you're basically saying Coleman's going in the portal tomorrow since that's the deadline in order to transfer without sitting?
If Coleman leaves then we're is he going to a good team where won't be challenged. I hope he stays, competes, and gets better. His time will come.
That’s true, but signing Nance doesn’t mean they are taking Coleman’s minutes. Right now we have two guys for the 4/5. Gotta bring in somebody.

Well, we finally broke the record for a single day thread. Impressive, Loyalty.
Have you actually seen what is going on this year? Buying players, players attempting to bribe programs, player tampering, 1500 players in the portal dude. This is college basketball right now and its ugly. And if a player like Hawkins is leaving because someone could possibly take some of his playing time, then he probably should be leaving. It has nothing to do with disrespect. It has to do with competition and winning basketball games. If you dont want to fight for playing time, then you should probably transfer to Eastern.
Nostalgic? For a few months ago? Ok.
Coleman is 2 years younger than Nance so they are at a different place. Is Hawkins better than Nance is now in two years? I think so.
And Melendez couldn't beat out Damonte either so are you fine if he leaves? (both should have started over Williams but we aren't the coach)
And its not being sentimental. Its called loyalty(see: website) and developing players like a program is supposed to do. If none of that matters then we can save a bunch of money on a coaching staff. Why do we need Underwood? It comes down to recruiting from the portal and letting them loose. You know...basically turning college basketball into the next AAU level. You know what you wind up with. A bunch of talent and a crappy product.
Is the deadline tomorrow or Sunday?
If he were to transfer.. I'd assume his commit would just say Roll Tide Roll
My guess is we sign two more of those spots. Save one for next year.
You need depth at every position. That is not disloyalty or disrespect, but rather team balance.
