I thought this even before the Rockies paid the Cardinals to take him. Now that I see him every game I am even more sure about it. That trade could end up looking as good as the Brock trade.

Yea, but the Brock trade F'ed over the Cubs for a generation, so that gives it extra bonus points

CHICAGO — On his way toward a career night boosted by a just another career milestone in a flurry of them for Albert Pujols, each pitch Jordan Montgomery made in the ninth inning was one more than he ever had thrown before in a ninth inning.
Montgomery had never even warmed up for a ninth in the majors, and there he was late Monday at Wrigley Field, in his first time at the center of a Cubs-Cardinals game, three outs away from the first complete game of his career. He had one run to work with. He had allowed one hit all night. He retired the first batter of the inning, his 17th consecutive of the game, then his 18th, and finally got a groundball to Pujols for the final out of the game. He finished one of the finest starts of the season by any Cardinal pitcher with a shutout on 99 pitches.

There’s an adjective for that.
Dominant.
There’s also a nickname for it.
That was waiting on his phone in a text from his brother Jay.

“It says ‘A Maddux,’” Montgomery recited. “Exclamation mark.”
Exclamation, indeed. Montgomery authored a one-hitter in 2 hours, 16 minutes and carried the Cardinals to a 1-0 victory against the Cubs. Pujols’ 693rd career homer was the only run the Cardinals got and the only run Montgomery needed. In his fourth win in four starts for the Cardinals, Montgomery earned what’s called a “Maddux,” after Hall of Famer Greg, with a shutout in fewer than 100 pitches. He faced 28 Cubs and got 27 outs.

Reliever Josh Hader struggled late in his tenure with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been awful for the San Diego Padres -- allowing six runs in his first 3⅓ innings with his new team.
So on paper, the Brewers’ head-scratching decision to trade Hader to the Padres as the trade deadline neared doesn’t look so bad.
But in real life, that trade decision unnerved the Brewers and sent them into a tailspin they may be finally escaping. Milwaukee lost 12 of 18 games before winning its last two.
“What we’re putting out on the field, I don’t think it’s all from the trade deadline or anything,” Brewers pitcher Eric Lauer told reporters. “We just haven’t been playing good baseball. We have to get better as a core and as a team in putting together games. What happened at the trade deadline, we still have arms, we got great guys back from that trade. It’s not like it was a horrible trade, it’s not like it was the end of the world or anything for us.

“But at the same time, it’s more the feel of the clubhouse. The message that it sends to us kind of inadvertently brought us down. It’s not like we’re trying to be brought down. It’s not like we don’t think we can do it, it’s just that there’s this weird hovering thing over us right now that nobody really knows what the answer is. We just have to get past it.”

CHICAGO — The importance of the home run to history was obvious when even a bleacher creature at Wrigley Field didn’t dare follow tradition and toss that baseball back on the field.
The importance of the homer to the moment was clear on the scoreboard.
Albert Pujols led off the seventh inning with a solo homer and gave Cardinals lefty Jordan Montgomery the only run he’d need on his way to a complete-game shutout. Pujols’ 693rd career home run led the way for a first in Montgomery’s big-league career. The lefty had never pitched in the ninth inning of a game before completing a 1-0 one-hitter against the Cubs on Monday at Wrigley Field.
Montgomery faced one batter over the minimum, getting 27 outs from 28 Cubs.

In his first start in the Midwest’s oldest baseball rivalry, Montgomery continued his unbeaten run since coming to the Cardinals at the trade deadline. Montgomery has won all four starts he’s made for the Cardinals, and he’s yet to allow more than a run in any of them. The lefty’s career night at Wrigley included retiring the final 19 batters he faced.
Nick Madrigal, the final batter of the game, skipped a grounder that allowed a fitting completion to Montgomery’s gem.
Pujols, who provided the only run, gloved the grounder and flipped to Montgomery, who beat Madrigal to first base for the final out.
It came on Montgomery’s 99th pitch.

He had no problem making the play.

Greetings,

Seven weeks to go and Cardinals have a slight leg up in the standings. But the Brewers start playing the Dodgers a bunch in the next two weeks, including a series starting tonight in Milwaukee. Tell me what you're thinking.

Please for the love of little baby Jesus would they just release DeJong and move Edmond to SS. I am.so sick of him.swinging a terrible pitches..

Sorry but time to either play at a major league level or move them along. O'Neill is getting close to.

So many hitters today don't seem to have a clue about where the strike zone is.

I think Jo Jo Romero has been pretty darn impressive since being called up to the show..........Decent fastball and a killer change up.......Attack's the hitters and has good poise on the mound........Another good pickup by Mo and staff at the deadline and I like the infusion of 3 lefties to the staff...
Jo Jo is a vast upgrade from T J McFarland , who by the way , sighed a minor league deal with the Cardinals today and will report to Memphis......

Maybe he can get some tips from Matt Carpenter...

DeJong makes little over $6 million this season, over $9 million next season and next two years after are club options($12M and $15M) with cheap buyouts.

I actually hope they will trade him in the offseason. The way the Cardinals usually work is will play out next year and than the option to buyout or if plays into contract go year by year on those last 2 seasons. I get it but unless DeJong can smack 25-30 HR every year with a low batting average he is holding us back.

One guy I am real big on that doesn't get a ton of publicity is Kevin Newman for the Pirates. Same age as DeJong and more of a contact hitter. He will not provide you power at all but also has a super low strikeout rate. The Pirates manager gets the younger guys playing time and does a horrible job of juggling that lineup on a day to day basis. Newman plays SS or 2B like Edman does. Honestly move Edman to SS with Newman at 2B would be the best defensive pairing. Could juggle Gorman in at 2B and DH and same with Edman/Newman between 2B and SS. Newman has like a .259 career batting average but is a bit deceiving. Out of 1450+ at bats in the majors he hits .295 from the 1st batting order, .300 being 1st batter of the game, .278 leading off an inning. Him and Edman would make a solid 1-2 punch that are interchangeable in field and batting order. Newman makes like $1.9 million this year and still have 2 arbitration years left. Perfect guy for Cardinals or random team to trade for if Pirates want to ride Oneil Cruz or whoever for the young movement.

It is so annoying how little run support Waino gets. I actually thought there were more games but 6 times he got a loss he probably didn't deserve.
April 9 against AZ he went 6 innings gave up 3 runs (Quality start)
May 26 only 5 innings 3 runs Milwaukee
July 8 9 innings 2 runs against Philly
July 13 only 5.1 innings but 0 runs. LA
8-13 9 innings 1 run Milwaukee
Today 6 innings 2 runs Cubs
I don't expect him to be credited with wins for all those games. 12-6 instead of 9-9 would look a lot better going into the final month of his final? year.

BTW- I misread the game log. He didn't take the loss July 13th or Aug 13. He still should have earned the win for both those games.

I dunno man, below league average hitter, low OBP, no power. So far his ceiling is Edman without the defense, and his floor is Edmundo Sosa without the defense. I'd much rather just roll with Gorman.

I am not saying he is the savior for the team. Looking at it from few standpoints. Those being the Cardinals like to save money and DeJong is a liability at SS if he can't provide offense. Also have to factor in Pujols and Molina will be retiring. Not sure about you but I don't want Dickerson back after this season. That DH spot opens up and Gorman provides instant hitting along with rotating in the field. Gorman can play 2B and fill in 3B plus DH and Edman and Newman can play either 2B/SS. I give Edman a big edge at SS but at 2B there isn't much of disparity between them. You throw Edman on the Pirates and Newman on the Cardinals if playing 2B and the stats would probably be the same. This year they have the same OBP and Newman has a higher batting average.

League Average Strikeout Rate(during Edman and Newman playing years so far) 22.8%

Leave Average Walk Rate (during Edman and Newman playing years so far) 8.6%

Edman career K 16.6% BB 6.2%

Newman career K 11.1% BB 5.2%

If you like Edman this guy is right up his alley. If you don't like Edman probably not feeling him much. Doubt we ever land him just want to see Newman land on a better team.

That's kind of the problem. Edman's value is that he's one of the best defenders in the league, excellent at multiple positions, and an excellent base runner. But he's an average to below average bat. Newman is the same bat, without the defense or baserunning.

Mikolas has had similar issues with run support in quite a few of his starts too.

Cardinals win 13-3 in the nightcap.......................Lots of Cardinal homers and lots of cubbie pitchers hitting Cardinals batters..............

THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did Nootbar get lifted, I was busy with other bs crap during that time?

#1,250
Lefty walked Nootbar and Carlson came in to PR for him. Bonus was Carlson got a hit later on

Was a 7-0 lead at that time so Carlson came in to play CF and that moved O'Neill from CF to LF and Dickerson from LF to RF
