It's good that the competitive resources flow to the programs the fans care most about, that's how it should be.

Who knows what happens under the sublime tutelage of Underwood and staff? I knew he left Memphis. Was going to google, but forgot his name.
Genuine question regarding legacies
Given the recruiting level that Illinois is recruiting at now, would Brad have even offered DaMonte in 2022, given the injury?
Is Phoenix Gill's offer a committable one? If he wouldn't continue to improve and Illinois would back off, does that leave a sour taste for Kendall? I know Kendall supports the program a ton, would anything change?
Are there any other legacies on the horizon that something like this would affect down the line.

Re: DaMonte, considering his only other offer was IU it would have been interesting. That said, Brad has shown that he values role players and DaMonte was an all time great one.
Jeff Johnson just wrote a post on this re: football, UI has a ways to go re: alumni recruiting on the FB side, but I think this staff a gift at the nuance necessary there and Gill specifically knows how these things work.
We had Jeff George's son at Ilinois last couple years. I wish we could have gotten Jacob Eason. He was a 5 star QB went to GA then WA now in NFL. I don't think there was any way that Lovie was going to land him over GA.

When I was in school in 80's our DT was Mark Butkus - nephew of famous ex Illini Dick. He had a good career starting for us on good teams.

We had Jeff George's son at Ilinois last couple years. I wish we could have gotten Jacob Eason. He was a 5 star QB went to GA then WA now in NFL. I don't think there was any way that Lovie was going to land him over GA.

Pretty sure we didn't recruit him seriously or at all, but with 20-20 hindsight JaVale McGee comes to mind as one who would have been worth taking a chance on. Late bloomer who went from unranked recruit with three offers (per Rivals and 247 profiles) to 18th pick in the draft after his sophomore year. Nevada lands McGee

Yep, was a great rebounder and bruising inside force for the Illini in the early to mid 80's. When I think of Big George and those teams, the travesty of having to play an Elite 8 game on Kentucky's home court comes to mind without fail. Home Cooking

I think JaValle was estranged from his father George Montgomery. The Illinois connection (Coach Henson) was long gone when Javale graduated from HS in 2005. I don't JaValle was highly recruited out of Hales Franciscan (he went to Univ Nevada) but he has had a long 14 year NBA career. Weber should have gone after him.
I think it just highlights how different recruiting is under Underwood vs. Weber. The current coach must track several hundred potential recruits throughout the country. Weber missed JaValle McGee in Chicago metro.

In Weber's defense, which I hate doing, McGee was missed by every P5 school on the country.
