Honestly I didn't think there was such a huge dropoff with Art in the game, at least not to the degree that everyone is implying here. His accuracy is much improved from last year, hitting those short passes about as well as Devito. I was also encouraged by the couple of longer passes he hit. And he's a little smarter about throwing it away when needed.

The difference is in the decision making. Art still tries to thread the ball into double or more coverage, and passing into plays that are obviously about to get blown up. Plus he telegraphs everything... is he checking down at all, or are these designed plays where it's A and only A? Devito is much more deceptive and creative.

Without a doubt Devito gives us a better chance. But Art just beat the #3 defense in the country, so I'm not gnashing my teeth at the idea of him playing next week.
There is a massive difference in play between the two.

On the year, Tommy has a QBR of 65.9, making him the 5th best quarterback in the B1G, ahead of Tanner Morgan, Graham Mertz, & Sean Clifford.

Art’s QBR against Iowa was a 28.3, which would rank for 2nd to last in the B1G, ahead of only Peatras.

Rutgers QB, who has thrown 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions on the year, has a season QBR of 38.4.

We’re in trouble if Tommy misses more than a game or two.

I’m grateful we have Art on this team. Without an experienced backup with his skills we lose the game yesterday.

Art has improved since last year, and yesterday’s game was his first “real” action of the season against a good defense. He’ll have some film to study, and he should be better next week.

Art beat Iowa. Like he beat Nebraska and Penn St. last year.

Let’s hope TDV can play soon, but I don’t know if I’d push to have Tommy back next week (unless he is ready to go) because there is a bye the week after. I’d rather have a healthy or healthier Tommy for the remainder of the season.

Go Illini!!

Control the line of scrimmage, control the clock. That's a W with or without TDV. Chase is on AutoHundo. He'll have another buck fiddy.

Our D hasn't given up a single TD at home all year. What are the chances they give up more than one on Sat.?

I'm rolling with our D until further advised. (But heal up quick TDV:sneaky:)

I'm assuming the back up to Art is Johnson? I dont know if he has thrown a pass yet at this level.

he hasn't , nor has Leary if he is #3 now. If we get to either of those in this game, we are in trouble.
with the bye week following Minny, the staff may indeed want to try to keep TDV out if possible.
Lets hope we hear hes okay by Wed to play.
Also, we are due to get Josh McCray back this week , I believe

The issue for me is that if Minn’s RB is back, they are a much better offensive team than Iowa. He’s on par statistically with Chase. And Minny’s QB has 4 INT on the season, but 3 were in his last game when the RB was out. So the likelihood of the Illini being able to win with FGs is much less. And Minny’s D — at least statistically — looks to be on par with Iowa’s.

I’m not gonna put anything beyond the Illini’s D the way it is playing, but this game could be even tougher for them than last night’s. If Art can’t get more out of the offense than he did last night, going to difficult to win. But if Tommy can’t go, it’s not impossible at all that a full week of practice and a game plan constructed with him in mind won’t have Art and the offense playing more efficiently.

Art's only played 3 quarters, a small sample size, and against the #3 defense.

I'm curious what opponent's QBR against Iowa is for the year.

Very true about what Art was up against. That is one of thr best defenses Iowa had ever had. Their offense is just a complete mess. It is shockingly bad.

Lunney has always been very clear that it's TDV, Art and Johnson as the first trio and then the freshmen behind them.

I assume if Johnson (or Leary or whoever) had really shown something they'd be in the reckoning, but who knows.

This offense has a lot of similar principles to Petersen's, but it asks a LOT more of a QB's accuracy and timing. And is therefore capable of a lot higher performance when the QB can offer that. Now things need to change.

While that’s true, the Iowa defense is a much tougher test than the Wyoming defense, Tommy’s QBR for the quarter he played last night was an 86.5 against the same defense.

I feel that it's worth pointing out that the defense was fresh at that point, too. That's damn good for a quarter of work against one of the best defenses in the country

The only decent team that Minnesota has played is Purdue, and they lost to them on their home field. I think they are overrated. And our defense is like a brick wall. I'm surprised that Minnesota is the favorite, especially since we beat them last year, and this is a home game for us where we have dominated.

I’m assuming the odds makers are expecting a Tommy-less game. If we find out in the coming days that Tommy will play, I expect the line to shift our way.

This is good. This will keep being ranked from going to their heads. Dog at home to the rowers. For homecoming.

Thank you Vegas!

2 thoughts on the team if Tommy can't go.

1. Let Art test the CB's. I think we ran a lot of quick screen game because Iowa likes to sit in 2 deep, but Arts windup is pretty telling and I think he doesn't always trust the plays. We have Hightower and Bryant, let Art try some deep and toward the sidelines throws(like we ran with Spann a season ago). Worst case scenario it's incomplete into the boundary and our receivers aren't getting lit up on slow deliveries.

2. Really not a fan of putting Isaiah in the wildcat. He's good in space, not when he's taking keepers right into the teeth of the defense for the hard yards.

I don't think we are going to hear much about TDV's health until close to game time. Why would Bret let Minn know who the starting QB will be if it's not obvious? I think coach keeps it close to the vest as long as possible to gain whatever advantage we can get.

The advanced stats adore them, which means they've been excelling on a play-to-play basis.

Another big time legit defense coupled with easily the best offense we've played so far, with an OL capable of slowing down our DL, which has been the position group that has dominated every game for us so far.

We're used to a certain kind of OL we have to compete with in the B1G West. Wisconsin and Iowa are both very, very down in that regard compared to their usual standards, and it showed. Minny has that sort of group.
