middle of year 2 and we are talking about possible playing for B10 Championship

A. Transfer portal changed everything
B. NIL changed everything
C. Bret is a top 5 college coach / miracle worker
D. All of the above

My Dad always said the Nitschke was better than Butkus at Illinois. He does have 5 NFL championship rings .

While at Illinois, Nitschke smoked, drank heavily, and fought at the drop of a hat. Never a good student in high school, his grades suffered at college. In his sophomore year in 1955, due to a depletion of players in the offensive backfield, Illini head coach Ray Eliot moved Nitschke from quarterback to fullback,[9] shattering his childhood dream of quarterbacking a team to a victory in the Rose Bowl. At this time, college football had reverted to primarily single-platoon football, meaning those players that were on offense had to switch to defense, and vice versa, when ball possession changed. On defense, Nitschke played linebacker. He proved to be a very skilled player and tackler as a linebacker, so much so that, by his senior year, Paul Brown considered him the best linebacker in college football.[10]

In his junior year in 1956 against Ohio State, Nitschke lost his four front teeth on the opening kick-off. Nitschke never wore a face mask and one of the Buckeye's player's helmets hit him in the mouth knocking out two teeth initially; the other two were hanging by the roots. He played the rest of the game.[11]

ABC or ESPN for IL@Neb will get finalized by Sunday Oct. 23rd. (No regional stuff going on.)

Other games in the mix are ND@Syr & Cincy@UCF, those two games will get either 11am ESPN or 2:30pm ABC/ESPN kickoffs.

Based on this, my hunch is we get the 2:30PM on ESPN kickoff. ND at Syracuse is too good of a national TV draw to not be on ABC, even in a down year for the Irish. Cincy at UCF likely gets the 11:00 AM kickoff.

I have a SWA flight I have been holding on to because traveling alone sucks. But SWA does fly to Orlando (horrible airport) and Tampa so I might use it then. I think we should have a meeting place so we could meet in person before the game? Or we should look for tickets that we could at least sit in the same area. I went to the bowl game when I was in Dallas against Louisiana Tech and got to meet a few people as the Cotton Bowl venue was not very full so fans could move around to a better seat.
i think the mental image of us would far outweigh the reality. Although i was not invited, ill pass.

I've always wanted to go to Nebraska (and all of the Big Ten stadiums, for that matter) for a game, and this would have been the perfect year ... unfortunately, I must go to a birthday thingy out of town.

Next fall, now that wedding planning is not a factor, the (new) wife has allotted me at least two Illini Football roadtrips, to Champaign or elsewhere.

This has wife or gf written all over it!! The only birthdays that are that important are if my bros, or my kid are having a special bash.

And those wouldn't be called "thingy's" :ROFLMAO:

Hell, I've only GAF about my own birthday once or twice in the last 10 years!

Oops, this ^^^ is missing info/not quite accurate. The 11am slot for ND or Cincy games could be ESPN or ABC.

Plus, OklaSt@KSU & TCU@WV are also in the mix, these 2 games could end up at 11am (ESPN or ABC) or 2:30pm (ESPN/ABC/FS1/FOX).

In conclusion, be it ABC or ESPN for IL@Neb there's going to be an earlier game and we may just be scrambling to watch the opening moments on the espn app or espnnews, something fun like that! Go Illini

I started to make a point to go to road games in the Big Ten pre-pandemic, and that all game to a screeching halt with the pandemic and fatherhood. I am hoping to start making proper trips again maybe next year, so I am very eager to see the schedule come out hopefully in the next day or so.

Been to many games:
Memorial Stadium (Illinois)
Michigan Stadium (will be there 11/19)

Been once:
Ryan Field (been too long, maybe going this year)
Kinnick Stadium (exceeded expectations)
Camp Randall (fell somewhat short of expectations)

B1G bucket list:
1. Memorial Stadium (Nebraska) (really far, but seems like a great atmosphere and the fans seem nice)
2. Beaver Stadium (even further, better atmosphere, but the fans rub me the wrong way)
3. Spartan Stadium (I came close to spontaneously going to the 2019 game, but was "too tired" to. Ugh...)
4. Ross-Ade Stadium (idk why I didn't make that trip while down at school, it was too easy not to do)
5. Ohio Stadium (obligatory at this point, but man it just sounds like an extremely toxic environment)
6. TCF Bank (Seems nice, but too far and not too impressive)
7. Memorial Stadium (Indiana) (seems like it has improved, but annoyingly far from Chicago)

8. SECU? (hard to imagine ever going, but at least you can fly into and stay in Washington)

9. High Point Solutions? (why? I can't think of one reason why.)

Technically, Rutgers now plays at SHI Stadium and the main appeal probably lies in taking the approximate one-hour train to New York City before game day (or on game day). Haven’t been there yet this year, but their Grange Grove-type tailgate pregame activity area now has a Jersey Shore Boardwalk theme.

As far as game traditions, in recognition of New Jersey’s Revolutionary War history, they have a few guys in colonial regalia firing a period cannon when Rutgers scores, On more than one occasion when a dominant opponent like Ohio State is winning 49-0 or something in the second half, the visiting fans’ attention will turn from the game to trying to coax the Revolutionary War guys to fire a few rounds off so they can see what it’s like.

For anyone thinking of going to Lincoln for a game - absolutely do it. The tailgating is great, the stadium is fantastic, the majority of fans are good people. It's an easy albeit boring drive along i80 to get there but it's a great experience.

Palmer is going to be an incredible test for the cornerbacks in two weeks. Is Witherspoon going to shadow him or will they stick to their pre-determined sides?

I'm nervous for every single game because I've been an Illini fan since birth and this all feels too good to be true ... but man, I just do not think Nebraska's offense (or especially defense) looks too scary. They generally have the reputation of having a decent offense and horrible defense, but look at the defenses they have played (total defense rankings):

vs. #95 Northwestern (Dublin, Ireland) - 28 points scored (L)
vs. FCS North Dakota - 38 points (W)
vs. #126 Georgia Southern - 45 points (L)
vs. #115 Oklahoma - 14 points (L)
vs. #108 Indiana - 35 points (W)
at #10 Rutgers - 14 points (W)
at #40 Purdue - 37 points (L)
FBS Average: 28.8 ppg vs. #82 defense ... 25.5 ppg vs. top 50 defenses, 14 ppg vs. top 25 and top 10

Meanwhile, while they have not played the TOUGHEST defenses in the world, our offense has gone up against the following:

vs. #78 Wyoming - 38 points (W)
at #108 Indiana - 20 points (L) ... man, this looks more like an outlier by the day!
vs. #64 Virginia - 24 points (W)
vs. FCS Chattanooga - 31 points (W)
at #24 Wisconsin - 34 points (W)
vs. #7 Iowa - 9 points (W)
vs. #6 Minnesota - 26 points (W)
FBS Average: 25.2 ppg vs. #48 defense ... 23 ppg vs. top 25 defenses and 17.5 ppg vs. top 10

So, Nebraska is barely outscoring us vs. defenses that are, on average, ranked about 40 spots behind the ones we have faced. When they have faced decent competition ... they pretty much can't score. When we have faced decent competition, with the exception of the slugfest vs. Iowa with our starting QB out, we have both suffocated that team defensively AND scored more points than Nebraska usually does.

None of this is to even touch upon the more obvious fact that Nebraska (#56 in total offense compared to #62 Illinois) is about to run into the buzz saw that is the #1 ranked Illini defense (while Nebraska sits at #123...). If we avoid mistakes, we should quite simply outclass them ... MAN, that feels good to say and to actually believe it!!!

I'm confident Illinois will play well against Nebraska. I also think Palmer is going to test this secondary in ways they haven't been so far this season. Both of these things can be true. Illinois hasn't faced a WR as good as Palmer all year (by a wide margin). Here are the PFF ratings of the top WR for each team they've faced (including Palmer for the upcoming game)

1. Palmer (NE) - 89.4
50. Chimere Dike (WI) - 79.2
201. Keytaon Thompson (VA) - 71.9
309. Daniel Jackson (MN) - 68.7
352. Cam Camper (IN) - 67.5
552. Joshua Cobbs (WY) - 63.1
630. Nico Rigaini (IA) - 61.7

Palmer is excellent and Thompson can sling it. Can Illinois get enough pressure on Thompson that eliminates their explosive down-field throws? Does Illinois shade help to Palmer? Do they scheme to maximize Witherspoon's coverage on him? I'm fascinated to see the gameplan.

Predictions Update
Oct 16, 2022
After beating Minnesota 26-14 yesterday, Illinois is now projected to finish the regular season 9-3 (6-3 Big Ten).
We currently rank the Fighting Illini as the #5 team in the Big Ten (and #26 team in the country).
Next game: Sat, Oct 29 at #72 Nebraska. Our power ratings give the Fighting Illini a 75% chance to win.
They have us ranked considerably lower than Minnesota, who we just dominated and who has a worse record than us.

True but Nebby has not seen this type of pass rush so his release time needs to be quicker. We rarely give opposing QB’s time to throw let alone go through their progressions. We put enough pressure on the QB, Palmer will not be as affective.
