Am I reading the Rose Bowl projection correctly??

Yes! They have OSU and Michigan making the playoff, which is probably unlikely.
It's not *that* unlikely. We'd need a TCU or Clemson loss, or ideally both. There will also be nearly as much resistance to 2 B1G and 2 SEC shutting out the playoff as there would be to 3 SEC teams, maybe more. The CFP process is even more political than usual at this moment.

Also, we'd need Michigan not to lose to Illinois, so it's totally unrealistic in that regard.

Btw, I saw an article claiming that if the Big Ten gets a participant in the Orange Bowl, it then loses its bid to the Reliaquest Bowl to the ACC. I thought it was the Citrus Bowl, but maybe the article was just wrong?

It's a little tough to gauge exactly where the top 5 or so B1G teams slot in, is my overarching point.

From the same article.

Realistically, the CFP field has been whittled to 13 teams—the group of Power 5 programs that have one loss or fewer. That list: Clemson, North Carolina, TCU, Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Oregon, USC, UCLA, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi.

Even if getting into the CFP doesn't (and probably won't) happen, what a special season. Before the season I said 7-5 is the ceiling and 4-8 is the floor.

Astounding.
So we go 0-4 the rest of the way?

No, I mean that the team has wildly outperformed all of my pre-season expectations. And I am quite glad to be wrong.

Yes! They have OSU and Michigan making the playoff, which is probably unlikely. But if so, and if we reach Indy at 10-2, we are going to Pasadena!

I would feel a lot better about this if Ped St took another loss. For Michigan and Ohio St to both make the playoff we would have to lose @Michigan and the B1G Championship.

We would have a regular season record of 10-2 with losses to Indiana and Michigan
Ped St would also be 10-2 with losses to Michigan and Ohio St
I’m afraid in that scenario they could be ranked higher

Would we rather play in the Orange Bowl at 7PM on Dec 30 or the Citrus Bowl at Noon on Jan 2?

If the Citrus Bowl were on New Year's Day like normal that's a no-brainer, right?

All of these conversations are happening in an alternate universe, and I'm very confused how I ended up here. Just a few months ago, I was in a completely different reality. Usually, I'd be scared, confused, and wanting to go back home, but I think I like it here.

So, two questions ... we Illini fans have not had to worry about this in a VERY long time. :ROFLMAO:

1) Did the Citrus Bowl replace the "Outback Bowl" (or whatever it is now) as one step below the Rose Bowl? As sad as this is, my perception is still from 2007, where if the champ (Ohio State) gets in the equivalent of the CFP (at the time, the BCS Championship Game), a Big Ten BCS at-large (Illinois) gets to fill in for the Rose Bowl slot, and the next highest team (Michigan) goes to the Outback Bowl. As I plan to possibly attend our bowl game, it would be nice to know of approximately three options!

2) Obviously, going to the Rose Bowl would be an amazing finale to this dream-like season! If that was our goal (absent running the table, of course!), we obviously likely need to beat Michigan in Ann Arbor or win the Big Ten Championship Game ... but beside all that, am I correct in thinking we should be hoping for a Penn State upset? That would really suck if Michigan and OSU both made the Playoff and Penn State, as the third team in the east, jumps us for the Rose Bowl (which I imagine is likely, in that scenario).

It was always the Citrus/Capital One Bowl ahead of the Outback/Reliaquest Bowl, with both of them being B1G/SEC matchups on New Year's Day, on the ESPN family of networks, leading into the afternoon Rose Bowl telecast. Since the mid 90's at least.

The Citrus Bowl used to be called the Capital One Bowl, and I am pretty sure that it has always had priority over the former Outback Bowl. That year we went to the Rose Bowl Michigan played Tim Tebow and Florida in the Capital One Bowl and Wisconsin played in the Outback Bowl. I cannot recall a single year that that priority was flipped.

Now the tricky part is if we get a third NY6 team in, which I believe would be the Orange Bowl, then we either lose our tie in with the Citrus Bowl or the Reliaquist Bowl. There's been some confusion as to which.

A Penn State loss certainly wouldn't hurt our chances. I have a feeling though that if we have a B1G championship berth at 10-2 we should be in the driver's seat for that 3rd tier B1G berth. But Illinois-er things have happened...

I regret to inform you that 10-2 Penn State will absolutely get a bowl slot ahead of 10-3 Illinois.

The likeliest scenario there though is just Tampa vs. Orlando on the same afternoon, both against the same tier of SEC schools, so who cares?

Them nabbing a Rose Bowl ahead of us would stink though. But again, we're hypothesizing a scenario in which both teams have losses to Michigan and Ohio State, just with us adding the extra loss to Indiana. Hard to call that unfair.

Well shucks... Guess we just have to go beat Michigan then!

This is what I am thinking happens then, assuming we beat MSU and Northwestern:

If we lose to Purdue (which then I would assume we also lose to Michigan): Reliaquist Bowl
If we beat Purdue but lose to Michigan and OSU: Citrus Bowl
If we beat Purdue and Michigan but lose to OSU: Orange Bowl
If we beat Purdue and beat OSU: Rose Bowl

Shoot, I totally confused the Capital One Bowl with the Outback Bowl and got doubly confused that neither one is called that anymore. :ROFLMAO: So, in short, it's still the same, and our most likely bowl game if we win the remaining games we are favored in is the Capital One Bowl/Citrus Bowl?

I would have to think your third scenario gets us in the Rose Bowl, no? I guess I am assuming Michigan loses to OSU here, as well, but we would have the same record as Michigan and would have just beaten them ... an 11-1 Illini team that is in the Big Ten Championship Game AND beat Michigan in Ann Arbor has likely jumped a 10-2 Michigan team at that point, as crazy as it sounds.

We will have at least 2 losses unless we beat both Michigan and Ohio State (Champ Game).

Perhaps. But I guess we are talking second highest ranked B1G team? I could see the committee doing this: We beat Michigan in a very close game. We are then ranked 6th and Michigan falls to 8th? Michigan loses to Ohio State and falls to 10th? We get boatraced by OSU and we drop to 10th and Michigan is at 9?

They could finagle their way to Michigan in the Rose Bowl because ratings. But you are right we would have a very strong case to make.

If we have a worse record it's not even a close call, fellas.

And we do not want to start throwing strength of schedule stones from our glass house.

IMO there is not enough discussion of us getting to Indy and getting to load up the slingshot for a David vs Goliath shot at winning the dang Big Ten championship, giving us the crown in both sports in calendar 2022. Very Illinois fanbase to be paying more attention to us being disrespected in the smoke-filled bowl selection rooms than getting a no-downside swing at a title.

I have so much pride getting on this site....and mixing it up with some Michigan fans on Twitter (they are obnoxious trolls). This seriously happened overnight, and I'm so happy Illinois football is back!

This is the goal here IMO.. the bowl games will sort out as they will. We already stubbed our toe losing to Indiana. Let's beat Purdue, MSU, and NW. Michigan and Ohio State are playing with house money
