You seem to miss my point entirely. Don’t let’s this game ruin your whole day
No, I got it. Being satisfied with exceeding preseason expectations is a pretty simple concept.

It can't ruin my day. It's Illinois football.

Bielma said the officiating crew was same as the Indiana game. Must be IU/PU grads. Those guys were terrible. Other than the Unsportsmanlike calls, I'm not sure Purdue received a penalty. And even as bad as we played, If that Witherspoon pick doesn't get that ridiculous flag, its a much different game. Ugh.

Lunnys play calling was terrible. If I see another delay handoff up the gut with this terrible interior OL I'm going to throw my shoe at him
Look, I don't want a fellow Illini fan to be denied the joy of seeing the O&B take the field in November or especially December. But, I also don't want another IL poster to be down a shoe in winter.

Watch next week's game on the radio.

While the last two weeks have been incredibly disappointing, there needs to be some realization with the fanbase that there would be some sort of regression to the mean. Team is still exceeding all predictions any of us had before the season started. The Illini have been exposed the last two weeks, but I think it’s disingenuous for us to question the effort of the team or even compare it to that the 2018 season. Gimme a break, everyone relax, drink a smoothie.
Not questioning the effort. Questioning the results. We are not playing the same way we did against Wisconsin or Minnesota the last two weeks.

There’s nothing sadder in the world of fandom than bitterly ranting on a message board that a bad call cost your team the game. And in fact I’m not saying a bad call cost us the game.

BUT ….

The PI on Witherspoon that negated an interception and gifted 7 points to Purdue to end the half was absolutely abysmal in terms both of its validity and the impact it had on the game.

Just the position Witherspoon was in when he made the pick should have indicated to any competent ref that coujd not have been DPI. One, Witherspoon was squared up at the QB staring down the ball during its entire flight. Two, he completely owned the inside of the route. The Purdue receiver was climbing over witherspoon’s back to try to bat down the pass. How do you interfere with a receiver you’ve already turned your back to before the ball is released? Even if the flag got thrown based on some phantom hand checks that you thought you saw but didn’t really, again just based on where the players were positioned that flag should have been picked up and the penalty waived off. ESPECIALLY when the officials KNOW what a huge momentum swing that is. Just terrible, terrible, terrible officiating.

Oh and if you didn’t see it on social media already, that’s the same crew that negated the obvious TD in the Indiana game.

I am willing to guess that we won't be ranked next week.

I’d seriously like to know the background of these guys.

Think about this. The league assigns this crew to this game. The most important game in the West to date. If anyone thinks that is a coincidence then I have a very high bridge down here in FL to sell you.

Good to hear BB address the calls and point out the issues with "this crew." I hope Josh is as good at supporting his program with the league as he is in all other aspects of being the AD, but we will never know if that is the case. The program has to address these situations though. BB is doing his part.

Don't really care if this sounds sad; the truth is there for all who care to see it.

P.S. I, in no way, mean this post to minimize what you are saying about ranting about bad calls. I wish it were not constantly necessary in most any game we participate in; but the Indy game and this game it is painfully obvious that there is a huge problem and it has too much of an impact on the games.

I just have to say that it sucked sitting in the horseshoe and having to endure the Purdue band the entire game... that was all we could hear
At the end of the game when we were waiting for the elevator, the band started playing the Alma Mater one last time. That bush league band heard what the aMarching Illini were doing and started playing (presumably) their fight song over it. I’ve been around marching bands for a long time and I’ve never experienced even on a high school level their kind of rude.

I wouldn’t invite them back and I wouldn’t accept an invitation from them.

Lets face it. The entire west division is sub par. Every team in it has had a couple of suck games. The last two weeks it was us. Whoever ends up winning by default will be annihilated by Mich or OSU nationwide prime time. We were never a legit 10-2 team. All that said its been a turnaround year and the program is going in the right direction for the first time in a long time. Still should end up 8-4 with a nice bowl game thats winnable. Most of us would have taken that at the beginning of the year. Officiating was horrible today. Couple of bad PI calls but we gave them over 50 yards on penalties on their go ahead drive so its as much on us as it is the officials. Next week will say a lot about the character of this team. Hoping we give a good showing and are competitive.

Thought that was going to be THIS week

Few thoughts on game:
1) Illini injuries and lack of quality depth is exposing the team, especially on defense
1a) Illinois is not deep enough to overcome self-inflicted wounds and bad officiating
2) Officiating is infuriating and taking away from the quality of game - constant PI calls on Illini really benefited a one dimensional Purdue offense, which outside of one drive did not run the ball. Also the 2nd qtr PI completely changed the game and is a fireable offense for how terrible of a call it was
3) Illini can't win without getting pressure on qb - credit Purdue for taking advantage of lack of pressure and understanding that Illini would get called for PI's on contested throws.
4) DeVito was slightly off today. Some missed throws and drops stalled a few drives
5) Constant offensive holding calls on Illinois vs none for Purdue, which is crazy
6)Season is not over, and crazier things have happened. Go out and play respectable against Michigan and take care of business vs Northwestern
And most importantly, despite the last two outcomes, it is fun to have November games that matter!

Just curious. With all the penalties called on Illinois, how many yards did Purdue get on plays, and how many penalties?

Purduw's defense was called for a bizarre "Disconcerting Signals" penalty, so there's at least one other flag.

We are just not good enough as a program to overcome the adversity multiple blown calls (both officials and coaching), baiting/bs d line calling out snaps/making illegal movements/faking injuries, etc. by opponents, and off games by key players have presented to us this year. Just have to become tougher mentally, and that goes for myself as a fan as well. It is a very big ask after the last 20+ seasons of incompetence. We flashed serious signs of competence in the first two months and a favorable schedule, but have slipped back to the old IL Football the past 2 games. Really frustrating as a fan begging for some sustained success. I guess at least making a bowl is something to build on hopefully; but quite a letdown probably letting a new year's day bowl appearance - in a location I could actually attend - slip away. Sucks.

The last two games have really highlighted our lack of talented depth on both lines. I worried those would be weaknesses for us this year, and was fooled by lack of competition in those areas during our early B10 schedule. Losing a couple studs has not helped either. But the last two weeks both units have been badly overmatched. When you give a sixth year QB a day and a half to throw it he's gonna find somebody open, and even if they aren't today's crew was gonna call a PI. Gotta hope the young guys can get up to speed quickly and provide some depth because that is where the last two game have been lost IMO.

I am going to refrain from any more comments about officiating other than to say that the collapse started from the moment the BS PI call happened. Granted, we let opportunities slip early again (thus my coaching calls comment). Touchdown next play and game over playing catch up the rest of the way. Those calls do not happen in a vacuum and teams like us can't just say "oh well on to the next play" after something that egregious. But it will never change and it has basically ruined both sports for me personally. Wish it were not so.
