@skyldub It’s not an overly harsh take? I thought Tony made better adjustments and they did out hustle us imo. I’m in no way saying we didn’t play hard but they played harder.

Yes the refs blew and TSJ was ice cold today but my point remains.

I didn’t think we ever shot all that well and missed shots we will make and still were in the game.

I was worried we would get crushed this weekend because of our youth. We didn’t. We already belong.

I’m so excited for this season now. This game will help these guys in March when it really matters.

Similar to football game yesterday...offensive execution in the last 3 minutes was the killer. We took some bad shots at the end. Closing out games with a bunch of freshmen on the floor is never easy. Credit to UVA....they finished strong.

Honestly, this team played really really well today. Not only does Virginia have the look of a Top 5 team thus far this year, they also are not a good matchup for us this early in the season. They're an experienced team that is very polished in their halfcourt sets and defense, don't allow transition buckets, and are a very good free throw shooting team. Virginia is a very very very well balanced team, and one that a team as young as ours should be expected to have a lot of trouble with. We played extremely hard, showed a lot of guts and effort, and we just don't have the experience to compete in half court sets with them right now. That said, this game will go a long way to teaching us what we need to do by B10 season.

I'll be clear- I would have loved a win in this, but I could not be prouder of how we played today and against UCLA. We went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the country fueled primarily by our freshmen and defense. This team has a lot of promise, they just need time playing together. That said, rebounding and free throws are going to be an issue all season and that we will need to improve if we want to go far in March.

It's Mayer and it was definitely a hook-and-hold. It absolutely should have been reviewed. I'm more concerned about MM's shoulder, though.
Pretty sure his shoulder was fine the whole time. No issue with him trying to get that call - has worked against us many times. And might have even got the call if they reviewed it. No idea why they wouldn’t at least look.

That aside, stripes were better than 98% of BIG games.

Way, way, way more good than bad this weekend. Some bright spots today even with the disappointing close. Got to find ways to win besides Shannon going on an insane heater like Friday, and we will. Have a feeling it’s going to take the staff awhile to figure out playing time for everyone and best combinations on the court together. That’s not an easy job but a good problem to have.

All I know is after UCLA Friday, Michigan yesterday and Virginia today, for the first time in my life I’m glad there’s no Illini game tomorrow. My stress level needs a break.

HUGE free throw disparity today.

Interesting that an ACC team gets more calls on ESPN.
Big disparity and of course that had an impact. But given the different rate of makes I’m not sure the impact was as big as people are making it out to be.

I was far more upset with the seemingly unorganized offense today. Was channeling BW and yelling at people to move.

I’m absolutely thrilled with how we look to start the season

I mean, he didn't come back into the game and his shoulder was getting worked on while he was on the bench. We'll see. I'd prefer not to have a Trent situation where he's wearing a sling all season.

This is gonna sound crazy, I think we might already be close to last years team already. We are a team that wants to run. Virginia slowed it down like Houston. We were in this game. A couple better possessions and we could have won this game.

I do miss Kofi getting 10 boards in his sleep though. Lol

We don’t make free throws. It’s an Illinois thing. Shannon was like 85 percent at tech. He’s gonna shoot 60 for us. Because Illinois. Lol
