I like the alignment we currently have of West and East. The West is pretty old school Big Ten and our states are similar culturally. The further east you go, the less midwestern the schools and people are.

What to do with ucla and usc? One in the west and one in the East?

For that matter, why not Old and New divisions? Put the eight longest-term schools in one division and shift the others over as the conference expands.
Legacy and Newbies.

That's what the SEC did when they brought in Miznoz and Texas A&M. Miznoz in the East and A&M in the West.

For that matter, why not North and South?

North: Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State
South: USC, UCLA, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland

I'm curious why you like Temple and UMass in the Big East. Geography and their institutional likeness to UCONN? Not sure their basketball is good enough these days to warrant consideration from the Big East.

On the other hand, I could see UMass and UCONN both becoming football-only affiliate members of the American Athletic Conference. Those two alongside current AAC full members Temple and Navy would make for a northeastern "pod" of 4 in a 16-team football conference. (UMass is floundering in football, too, but perhaps the AAC would like to access the New England market and UMass' 30k strong student body.)

I'll add that I love the idea of interchanging football divisions within a conference. Maybe this has been proposed already, and I missed it >>>
each year, conference records from the previous season being used to determine the new divisions.

2023 Big Ten divisions would resemble something like the below... and then they'd do a little schedule finagling in the cross-division matchups to make sure every team gets a key rivalry game if the two teams aren't in the same division using this system. Perhaps it's too complicated or "too close to opening day" to make work, but I like it.

Division A
-Previous year conference champ (UM)
-#4 (PU)
-#5 (Illinois)
-#8 (Maryland)
-#9 (Wisconsin)
-#12 (Indiana)
-#13 (Rutgers)

Division B
-#2 (OSU)
-#3 (PSU)
-#6 (Iowa)
-#7 (Minn)
-#10 (MSU)
-#11 (Nebraska)
-#14 (Northwestern)
Too complicated; too confusing.

However, just might work for 8U youth recreational soccer.

I didn’t realize UCLA’s DIA was operating a a deficit. That would have been malpractice had the Board of Regents stood in the way of UCLA joint the Big 10.

As it was, they probably felt they had to display some sort of protest politically, while not actually doing anything to actually affect the move.

I'd love to see Oregon and Washington in too. Stick IOWA and NEBBY out in the quake zone. Be nice to be able to go to the Rose Bowl again:)

Like we can’t call ourselves the Fighting Illini 🫤
2/3 of the people here are so dumb it'll take them at least a few years to know what "Illini" actually is. Then ya, there will be some sort of protest or denunciation.

they changed Long Beach State's nickname from 49ers to basically nothing. just "Beach", because the university and students thought "49ers" was racist.
-even though it was b/c the school was founded in 1949

Not kidding. 100% real

If you don't mind, what would the other (many, many others?) interpretation of 49er's be that would make it racist?

SC is like our Norte dame and Michigan combined. Lots of license plate frames with people who never went there, and the ones that did, have persistent smugness about it. Even my mom back in the day with Jeff George v USC got into it with the sc fans. And she’s just a kind old lady.
Ucla people are far more tolerable, except in basketball, but they are a part of the public UC system, which….
