Each ‘23 Big Ten West team will have a different QB than when Illinois faced them this season.

The whole western division will be filled with Gun Slingers next year. Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue. The Big is not only stacked with new coaches but new q.b.'s. Can't help but feel that NIL and the new t.v. deal-conference expansion is helping to fuel more competition and at a higher level. Imagine USC, UCLA, and possibly Oregon and Washington. That would be insane.
I’ve adopted the Ducks as my secondary team.
If they end up in the B1G, the trash talk with my Oregon friends would be…

Hoping for good things from Luke. As with all recruits you just never really know until the ball is snapped.

Some nice young talent at QB on the bench. I really expect some competition in 2024. Although best case is Luke blows the doors off in 2023. (That would mean at least one QB transfer)

Can't speak as a very informed person or one who can relate in any way to Art, but I have to imagine transferring to a school just to be three different guys' back up in three consecutive years can't be the greatest feeling. The fact that he is joining the staff must show something that there are no hard feelings toward the staff, but he probably didn't want to go through the motions of another faux QB battle in camp if the writing was on the wall.

He definitely is a better insurance plan than our other unproven options, but I can respect the move.
Can look at this from both sides. From art’s side that you mentioned. And likely #2 even if Luke struggles.
From staffs side, factor in roster management and GA position open after one left for Purdue. But can’t really see staff not welcoming him back as QB due to thin room. It would be like having an extra coach on the roster

Yeah, but he's not really a recruit. An unseasoned transfer, yes. But he has 2 years with a P5 program as QB2. Huge difference from a prep.

To your point, I really like how the QB room is trending.

we are fine if hes stays healthy. we are in a pinch if he gets hurt - but then so are most teams.
Its not going to be easy to attract another QB in the transfer portal to be a back up

Luke Altmyer, who played quarterback at Ole Miss the past two seasons, announced Thursday his plans to transfer to Illinois football. He announced the news via a tweet.
Altmyer's tweet said, "Let's go #Illini."

Since Altmyer only played four games during the 2022 season, he has three seasons of eligibility remaining when he arrives at Illinois.

A rising tide lifts all boats. I fully believe Altmyer's presence will lift the entire QB room. I think 3 of our other QBs have a legit chance at becoming decent starters (where decent is the floor). That said, I expect one of those QBs will transfer out next year.

Also, getting Swanson in early is huge. Really like his potential (not suggesting he'll be ready to go in 23, should Altmyer go down).

And that is why I wish Art would use his last year of eligibility, but if his heart’s not in it, then I hope he’s a great GA and Coach.

Great kid, think he has a bright future ahead of him as a coach if he really develops the bug for it, but we were totally screwed in any scenario in which he had to be under center for us, and with a year under Leary's belt and a potentially bigger talent in Swanson, those are clearly better options than Art would have been.

It was Petersen's mistake, for which the fact that Art is a high caliber person with the winning team-first mentality it took to handle the TDV situation so well proved to be the silver lining.

All good things. Onward and upward.

Yeah, fully get having Art in our back pocket as an emergency QB. But he's not gonna be practicing and there'd be serious rust. Not to mention, there's probably a rule preventing a GA to walk-on conversion. Anyway, having a QB2 derby isn't a bad thing.

Lunney's pupils are pretty malleable, which augers well (theoretically, anyway). Have serious hope that he's a QB whisperer.

More info here. Art came to the decision himself. Good to hear and good read.

The only potential problem I see with this is that he has 3 years and not 1 or 2. If he has 1 year or even 2, it would allow Swanson to get his feet wet and be ready to start his junior year. As is, assuming Altmyer wins the job and plays ok, you probably lose Swanson after his freshman year because he is not waiting until his senior year to be a starter. Maybe I am wrong but that clearly has not been the pattern with quarterbacks in this new portal world.

I agree with jjv0004, transfers help a lot. But trying too recruit H.S. school talent and then they find out after committing that they may sit 2 or 3 yrs. Can work against a recruiter when talking to these young men.

Swanson will redshirt. If all goes to plan (lol), he'll be a starter as a redshirt junior.
