I thought BB made it clear that the helmets we wore this year were going to be the helmet of the future. He came up with (or strongly endorsed) the design.

BB redesigned the helmet before his first season. He wanted the white face mask and a Block I on an orange helmet. I believe he said it was something temporary before a full redesign. He also said he likes a consistent look (orange helmets and blue jerseys at home).

I like the script, but am I the only one who thinks the basketball version looks a bit cleaner/better? You could just spell "Illini" instead to shorten it for the helmet:

I think consistency between sports with that badass script (on the basketball jerseys) would be great!

EDIT: Someone beat me to it, glad I'm not alone!
The L's on the sweatshirt are too thick and too tall.

Yep, our uniform combos under Lovie seemed especially all over the place, lol. Conversely, in Bret's two years...

Home: O/B/O 12 times, O/B/B 1 time, O/B/W 1 time
Away: O/W/O 6 times, O/W/W 4 times

Worth noting that both home game deviations came in 2021 (O/B/B vs. Wisconsin and O/B/W vs. Northwestern). The "Butler Did It" seems to be that we have settled into a clear routine, but we can't decide if we like the orange or white pants on the road. :ROFLMAO: Personally, I like the orange pants on the road or even an O/W/B combo, like the 1999 upset of Michigan at the Big House ... just don't like the O/W/W look that much at all. I've harped on this before, probably to a "broken record" level, but this is absolutely what I would support if/when we get a consistent set of great new jerseys!

Home: O/B/O, almost always!
Away: O/W/O, almost always! Occasionally, I think O/W/B would look cool, too.
vs. Northwestern: Make a statement and look like the Bears ... B/B/W at home, B/W/B on the road and occasionally B/O/W.

All blue and especially all orange should be used VERY sparingly, IMO. I hated how we just shuffled through combos for a few years before BB.

Script team name on an orange helmet seems too much like Florida Gators helmet IMO…

Are we worried it is too like Florida? I think the 80's arch ILLINI helmet is our best if you raise the letters.
Yes. Agreed. There was another thread about uniforms that had a conceptual design that said “illini”, not in cursive, that was basically an updated version of the 70s-80s helmets. I think that’s the way to go.

I love the Illinois script basketball jerseys, but the script on those t-shirts is...rough. Either use the basketball script or do something different. Personally I don't mind the Block I at all (or the "giants" Illinois helmets, which I believe is an unpopular opinion), and really I think they just need to introduce more white into the unis so we look more like old Illinoiis (or Virginia, for reference) than Syracuse.

The reason I like it so much is not just that it looks cool (it does) or that it’s not another “I” (it isn’t).

The reason I like it so much is that you pretty much can’t look at it without your brain thinking “I-L-L. i-n-i”

It takes what is probably our strongest school culture identifier in the post-chief era and turns it into a graphic you can’t not see with your eyes. Total brilliance.
Well, my brain never thought that, just thought about how loopy it is.

I seem to be in the minority that doesn't like it.

A thousand monkeys sitting at a thousand drafting tables drawing “Illini” logos for a thousand years could not come up with a better helmet+everything-else design than this.

It’s the best we could ever possibly do.
Please green light. Please.
The block I is a better logo than script Illini.

That script Illini is ok on a sweatshirt but should come nowhere close to appearing on a helmet. The basketball script Illinois is better than the script Illini. It should also not appear on a helmet, but should absolutely replace 1LL1NO1S

I would actually totally support a "logo model" or whatever where we effectively run with the following using all the color combos of orange/blue/white:

(1) Current Block I as our main logo
(2) Script "Illinois" like the basketball jerseys as the main font when it needs to be written out anywhere.
(3) Block "FIGHTING ILLINI" as the secondary font, with it prioritized for things like the baseline at State Farm Center or the end zone for Memorial Stadium.

I'd honestly be fine with any of the three on the helmet (with (3) needing to just be "ILLINI," most likely) ... I think they'd all look great.

Mostly, I just hope our end zone is updated this year to have the font be either (2) or (3) ... both look WAY too cool to not be utilized more, especially if the alternative is "1LL1NO1S."
