Brad paid his dues for 35 years before he got his first P5 job. Talk about late bloomer.

Idk how you can not put MSU with multiple national championships in different eras, a zillion final 4s and S16s and a constant national brand with a sold out arena in tier 2.

Purdue has had multiple very good coaches and eras and similar to MsU, has a great and constant sold out arena and brand.

I love Illinois but to an outsider, I don’t see our job/place as better than those 2.
I'll address each seperately:

Michigan State: I'm not convinced they'll carry on at the same level without Izzo, and I AM convinced Michigan will be a top-level program in the long term. And I think MSU will suffer from this dynamic. Again, this is about what the job is like for a blank slate coach, not the state of the program. Their sold out arena is as relevant as ours (we sold out every Big Ten home game this year...?). I'll eat crow if I am wrong, and I think there is a good argument for them to be equal to Tier 1, I suppose. However, I think the argument it's a better job than Illinois or Maryland boils down to admiration for what Tom Izzo has done ... and I guess I ascribe way more of that to Tom Izzo than I do the built-in advantages he enjoyed, and I think that will prove to be true when he retires.

Purdue: I just disagree here. If anything, I don't think people appreciate how tough of a spot Purdue actually is and how remarkable their consistent success has been - a HUGE credit to Keady and Painter, guys who have recruited to their systems and noticeably struggled in the NCAAs. People talk about how we struggle in March, but we have been to two Final Fours since Purdue's last one and more than twice as many as them overall. Ask a Purdue fan about the instate dynamic, and you'll immediately see the frustration. Very few people who didn't go to Purdue grow up anything other than a Hoosiers fan, and PU will also have minor competition for instate recruits from Notre Dame when there's a decent coach there. PU fans have also been complaining about their relatively awful NIL situation if you read their boards, which I think speaks to a smaller fan base less willing to pony up. Great school, great tradition, cool arena ... but I am not sure "Purdue Basketball" in and of itself lends itself toward winning big; I think the men who have led those programs have just been extraordinary.

When I judge a job like this, I think "How good SHOULD that program be with the theoretically exact same coach as its peers?" If you're a hypothetical Tom Izzo who appears out of thin air with all of his current skills and experience gained somewhere outside of the Big Ten, would it be easier to win at Maryland or Illinois than Baylor? I say absolutely duh, and the fact that Baylor has been a MUCH better program than both the last couple of years is not that relevant. This is of course all subjective, and I think due to the way the conference was set up with many large, public universities, the Big Ten has a lot more "really good jobs" than a lot of conferences.

I'm late to the party on this....the whole work thing got in the way. Let's just assume that BU is on a bit of a fishing expedition. We're talking about the same Sean Miller that got bounced out of AZ for some unsavory recruiting practices? He's been at Xavier for one year and he's already open to bailing after they gave him his career back? I'm sure he's a nice guy, but his resume would have a few red flags on it. Fired + short stay at his next job.....not exactly a hiring manager's dream.
Good observations. Good points.

I think Miller probably holds out for something bigger. Decent chance Kentucky, Michigan, and Michigan State all open in the next few years. Self won't coach forever either. No inside info, just my hunch that he would hold out for something bigger.
Why would Miller "hold out" for something bigger? Couldn't he move then move again? It worked for Self.

not really. let's not pretend that a power 5 head basketball coach is anything like a normal job that most of us do. most hiring managers have only the resume in front of them and it that case it would look bad because they don't know this candidate at all. but these coaches lives are so well publicized that we know everything about them. so in this case we know that his case for firing was likely due to something that is still not legal but with the advent of NIL, it's something much less practical so not likely to happen again. as for the short stay, sounds like our hiring manager is reaching out to him so seems like a moot point.
