Saw the beloved play against Marino many years ago, and I think he threw 3 or 4 interceptions and we were in it until the end. I walked to the parking lot saying he would never play in the NFL. Wow, was I wrong. Between my dad, RIP, and myself we have 52 years of season tickets between us. Go Illini!!
Don’t feel bad… I seriously doubt any of us here ever thought Boiler Breese would morph into Saint Breese - or Wolverine Brady to Patriot/Buc Brady.

The inverse would be many an Illini fan I knew saw Ryan Leaf as a better draft prospect than Peyton Manning based on his performance versus Illinois.

Would be interesting if Altmeyer is beaten out since he used his free transfer. Maybe he’d up his course load to graduate early and grad transfer.
I mean, I would be totally shocked if Altmyer isn’t the clear and undisputed starter, but anything is possible.

Altmyer is the most talented, most experienced and was brought here to fulfill the starter role. But a quality backup would be a great and increasingly rare luxury.

we know everyone in that QB room , with the only exception being Leary, is for sure here for the next season . Let’s hope Leary has also bought in to his role for 2023 , whatever that may be .

Robert has a nice recent write up about the three new guys in that room - Altmyer, Paddock & Swanson

What you have to think about the QB room is that this staff is looking at those who are not rising to the top three as potential players at other positions. I have no idea if any of them could shift but this staff seems to be ready to do that. As one of the players not rising to the top I would be looking at staying to learn as much as possible with an eye to moving into the coaching profession. That learning opportunity is probably much more valuable for those young men than giving the NFL a shot. In any event it is nice to see the Illini with a busy QB crew. Competition is good.

it’s one thing when you are Isaiah Williams and EVERYONE in college ball at every program has been suggesting you try being a WR instead of QB. But I highly doubt Leary or Swanson or anyone else in our QB room is going to embrace a position change .

They will simply transfer out to a program that will give them a better chance at playing .

I hope Luke or someone is a clear #1 for us heading into week 1. Like head and shoulder above the second man. If we have a carousel situation, that means we’ve probably lost a few early on.

In the portal/NIL era are all positions are sort of "see what sticks"

Does that mean sometimes talented players will go under utilized for their entire career? Yes, it does.

It's a competitive sport, you won't really be handed anything unless you're Brian Ferentz.

I’m not big on SEC football. Can someone help me understand the Altmyer hype?

“In eight appearances over two seasons, Altmyer completed 28-of-54 passes for 317 total yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.”

That sounds…meh. It’s in a backup role but those numbers and failure to secure a starting spot don’t really get me excited. Can someone paint the picture that the stats don’t for me?

Mostly mopup duty as a very highly touted and offered recruit who was immediately the #2 as a true freshman.

Unproven (54 attempts doesn’t really make an impression with me either way) but a really big time get and a potential to be a huge long term figure for us.

RS Freshmen starting at QB is pretty rare of outside of generational talent... and then after that Lane Kiffin gave him a chance to win the starting job after Coral so he had high hopes for him.

If Altmyer wins the starting job this year as a RS Soph and stays healthy, could be the key to this program taking the next step.
