Kofi couldn't wait to leave Illinois, let's recap, freshman year declared (which was super lol considering how raw his game was), got told no and came back, second year declared (and was so ready to go he started selling all his stuff), got told no, went to the portal and came back after Kentucky chose Tshiebwe. Third year was a first team All American that hinted that Underwood was hindering his pro potential, declared and didn't make the NBA, and is in a Japanese B League.

I don't really see much proof that he is an Underwood man through and through. That's just the Coach he played for.
Well he's the coach Skyy Clark didn't play for, so I guess there's levels to it.

"Kofi couldn't wait to leave Illinois." Now let's list all the times that Kofi could have left Illinois but didn't...

3 years ago, it would have been a no brainer for Hawkins to leave if he thought he would get drafted - he could make $ and practice full time and receive coaching from professionals who are the best in the business.

NIL $ definitely changes the equation. If you are a 2nd round draft pick there is no guarantee you make a roster, so more than likely you go overseas or play for a developmental team - less $ but you still get better coaching. Vs making more $ here with an opportunity to improve your draft position, but with less opportunity to develop your game. Not an easy decision

Underwood would never admit it, but having no point guard besides two 19 yr old kids was a mistake.
(both of which were never point guards.) My guess is we will have one or more upper class portal point
guards next year.

I think he'd readily admit that he was rolling the bones and it blew up in his face.

I'm sure there are few haters on here and some that are simply voicing frustration for a lack of tourney success over the last few years, especially with the pool of talent we've had. There's certainly disappointment with with early exits in the tournament. I don't want to take a away from Big Ten championships, but I'll take consistently being in the second weekend and deep runs every couple years over those any day.
While it is frustrating that we haven't had any deep runs in the tourney. I will take that everyday over the frustration of not making the tourney year after year. Which is what we were dealing with before Brad took over. We need to remember how tough the big10 is the last couple of years. Used to be there were always 3-4 teams at the bottom that you could count on 6-7 wins, not like that anymore. It would definitely be nice to get to the next step.

*Checks in on "Illini Basketball" thread to see what the Illini roster might look like/who's staying/who's leaving/what coaches might be back/etc*
*Sees more of the same complaining about Coach Yellyface being too gosh-darn mean to his kids*

I was a very good center fielder but marginally good hitter in high school, and my head was sometimes sort of in the clouds worrying about girls and being cool and whatnot. My coach was on me constantly, often pretty harsh. I remember bitching about it to my friend who never played and he just laughed and said, "Dude, at least he yells at you..."

Coaches know when to give up, and they'll only get worked up if they REALLY want to get the potential out of a player. And a player is lucky if he realizes this early enough to be motivated by it and improve!
Not always, some coaches are just jerks who love power.

Fletcher: "I was there to push people beyond what's expected of them. I believe that is an absolute necessity. Otherwise, we are depriving the world of the next Louis Armstrong, the next Charlie Parker."

Andrew: "But is there a line? You know, maybe you go too far, and you discourage the next Charlie Parker from ever becoming Charlie Parker?"

Fletcher: "No, man, no. Because the next Charlie Parker would never be discouraged."
Luckily we already have the next Coleman Hawkins….

If my girl friend or wife yelled at me I would be concerned. If she goes silent then you know the relationship is over.

If someone 'loves' you (has your best interests at heart)... the increased level of yelling volume may represent the same increased level of their affection for you.

If someone yells at you but does love or care about you... the increasing level of that volume just represents the increased level of disregard for you.

The secret ingredient and measure: INTENTION.

Same either way with coaches (and teammates).

Which means there should be more opportunity for quad 1 wins and we got zero in the Big 10. Kind of embarrassing. Look at Clemson. They got those extra wins and didn't make the tourney because they had less opportunities and more chances for bad losses. Works both ways.

I’m just curious, but what the hell do all these kids in the portal (at UI and elsewhere) do about the classes they are enrolled in. Do they finish out the semester? Are all classes still online like it’s Covid still? I mean I assume some of them actually care about their education and want to enroll in good standing at the next school. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most programs have ups and downs. Jim Larrañaga is having a great year. A little know fact: In his 6th season at Miami, he was 14-18. In his 6th to 8th years there, he was 39-51, with three straight losing seasons.

Underwood returned 16.5% of minutes played and 13.9% of scoring from 2021-22. He was 20-13 and made the NCAA tournament.
Larranega is also 16-10 with 2 final fours. Underwood is 4-7 with zero. Not exactly the same. We can live with rebuilding years if it's offset with deeper runs. Until Brad proves he can do that, the seat will only get hotter.

Their scholarship runs until the end of the semester, so they can finish their current coursework.
