What a disaster. I'm already about done with next season at this point. I can already tell you the story arc:

Illini have hot start with length and positionless basketball
Illini lose to a couple of inferior opponents on cold shooting nights
5-7 game bounce back
Oh crap, they figured out we don't have a point guard and over leverage on every single PnR and ball screen
We rebuild our offense on the fly again for the 7th time in 7 years
Bubble watch
First round bounce
Underwood takes his dream job at $NewSchool
Morez Johnson never puts on an Illinois uniform

NBA players are getting drafted based on tools and projections on how their game will translate to the NBA level not how good they are in college. Plenty of guys get drafted early that were never great college players.

On the other hand you have Drew Timme who is probably the best college player in recent memory and went undrafted. You also saw Tshiebwe, Council, Sanogo, and Tubelis all go undrafted.

The best team in Illini history that nearly went undefeated and won the Nation championship only had one good NBA player in Deron.
yep....thanks for making my point more distinctly

I know this is probably unlikely but if Brad and the staff truly believes in Ty bringing the ball up and the combo of secondary ball handlers like Shannon, Harmon, Domask, etc. Is there any chance that Illinois goes after Raequan Battle?

Battle is a big guard that can score at every level and is a very bouncy athlete. If there was interest in Reeves id assume there would be some interest in battle who is not as good of a shooter but a better overall player imo. Seriously just look up his highlight reel of dunks and imagine him and Shannon running in transition.

Shannon, Battle, Domask, Rodgers ,Hawkins would have a ton of length(5 guys at 6'5+), shooting ability, and athleticism. It would also have 3 proven scorers that averaged 15+ last year in Shannon, Battle, and Domask.

On the other hand you could also theoretically pursue Jesse Edwards and build the best interior defense in college basketball.

Please BU, get Kerr so you can shut me up until the season. Screwups will be (at least temporarily) forgiven. I want to see what this team can do this year. Please go out there and shut the haters up. But you need a PG to do so...

Illinois was prepared to take a chance on Jeremiah Williams as a favor to their Meanstreets peeps, but he got tangled up in the gambling controversy at Iowa State.

Justin Harmon should be okay. Haven't heard differently yet.

Look out for Texas with Kerr Kriisa. Illinois will kick the tires. Memphis, Cincinnati, Xavier, and Nebraska are schools he looked at before.
elaborate?

So if the Illini do not land Kerr, what is everyone's thoughts on Joe Toussant? Would you be satisfied with him as our point guard?
I realize at Iowa he wasnt anything special, but he did have a pretty good year at West Virginia, and other than assists, his numbers are close to Kerr and Mulcahey,
He shoots almost 80 percent from the charity stripe. That can come in handy at the end of the game when protecting a lead. Plus, we wouldnt need to find out
if he is eligible or healthy. I would think he would be serviceable and a defense minded and experienced point guard that is familiar with the Big Ten.
my thoughts are this is why you balance your classes.

This is the last go for Shannon and Hawkins. This is the last go for Domask and Guerrier as well, same for Harmon if he makes it. So given your best players are in their final year, you want a good cast around them, and you sure as hell want a PG.

So now we're looking at a guy who could potentially be a team cancer, but is highly talented in Kriisa. Toussaint is a mediocre player at best. So do you bring in an experienced guy with limited ability, or do you say, we're better off as a program down the road developing a younger player, but with so many final year players, there's no time to develop anyone, you need to win now.

So you're kinda screwed either way. We break someone in and develop them and live with the mistakes, or bring in a mediocre final year guy, and lose that development. What is the lesser of two evils?

I wish one person could tell anything Underwood has done wrong about trying to get a point guard. There has been a lot of talk but no facts given.

This is what is being alleged. This information has been around for quite some time, and some have pieced together names based off of court records, etc. This makes the initial commitment frustrating, especially since the staff had to know of the allegations.

Look, I still hate Mulcahy, but somebody's gotta bring the damn ball up
Bringing the damn ball up is not really an issue, with good coaching. If the press, you pass the ball. If they don't, you dribble it. It's only rare occasions that a guy suddenly goes Sencire-ballistic and catches a ball handler unaware. But yes, it does require coaching to avoid excessive turnovers.

More important is having a whole team that will pass, move, read defenses and be in synch. Plenty of teams do quite well with passable point guards. My concern is that the rest of the team will look like last year's and won't have any idea how to run an offense.

It's maybe not so much the recruiting aspect (unless you want to say that there has not been proper vetting);
1. Miller (1 yr--transfer)
2. Smith (1 yr--transfer)
3. Curbelo (1 yr--transfer)
4. Clarke (10 games--transfer)
5. Epps ( 1 yr--transfer)
6. Williams (didn't even make it to campus)
7. Harmon (??)
It looks like the recruiting has not necessarily been the problem ( although this will surely be used against us in the future) so is it the coaching once they get here? or is it a lack of developing them for the point guard role? BU is ultimately responsible, but who is the assistant responsible for the guards?

help me out here DB. Why did Brad give this guy an offer without doing due diligence on Williams? Seems wild for a supposed Top hoops program to completely be left in the dark here for a position that we so desperately need.

Edit: just seems like a waste of time for all parties. I’ll hang up and listen. Thanks
Supposed? Historical top 15.

Failing. That’s the one thing.
. . . . the one thing everyone has in common. Everyone, even the most successful people in the world have failed at one thing or another. Every Single One.

According to Christian lore, the last perfect person was hung on a cross. Which is pretty much what many are trying to do to Underwood here on Loyalty. You sir, are deserving of my highest compliment.
