Exactly - the rules and style are different. The extension of the run game into screens and easy pass windows that drive up stats. The lack of being able to be nearly as physical with the receivers.

I have a feeling too that most QBs had more legit injuries they hid during that time given what was allowed and the hits they took. If you watch 85 Bears highlights, half the QB hits would have had immediate suspensions. Compare that to a 2 foot window you can hit Tom Brady in 2020 without drawing a flag.

2011 Scheelhaase 2110yds 63% 13/8 (1.6:1)

i would love Altmyer to exceed those numbers but if he did it would be a 2nd historic season of QB play at Illinois. the good thing is, i don't think he will need to exceed those numbers for the team to be successful.


(also, it's hard to underestimate how unbelievable Tommy DeVito was for us last year. literally had a record setting season in his only year here.... if only we could have gotten a waiver to run it back one more time...)

TD to INT is an interesting stat that gets put out

1. Not all INTs are created equally. A red zone INT is different than an INT at the end of the half

2 if you have a running game that scores TDS unlike last year a qb may not have that many TDs

I wasn’t reading Purdue 217, I was listening to Jeremy Werner. What Purdue thinks doesn’t matter for us but it’s annoying that they think they have reloaded and are above the Illini. To me Bart > Walters all day, just saying.

Edit: that Purdue game last year really chapped my rear. Their defensive line clapped before our snaps, their band playing over ours….I’ve never thought they were dirty but I left last season feeling different.

Watching the winning drive against Ohio State in 1983, you'll see Trudeau take an (now) illegal launching hit to the head by Roland Tatum that Trudeau probably still feels today.

Agree. I've hear Purdue referred to as a "friendly" rivalry. IMO, if a rivalry is friendly, it ain't no rivalry.

Listened to the same thing - the Wisconsin guy expecting 9 wins, with a shot at 11 seemed like an unrealistic expectation, but we will find out on the field. Need our DL to keep doing what they have been doing against their retooled OL. That air raid will change the dynamic for the Wiscy D as well - Badger fnd are gonna freak out a bit at the change in that regard.

TBF, I’ve never once in my life considered Purdue any sort of rival. The only real answers in any sport for a “real” rivalry throughout my fandom were Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Northwestern.

With that said, I disliked Purdue infinitely more after that completely horrid football game last year.

I would agree with the above with the exception of Northwestern. I have never gave NW a second thought for decades. It has just been a recent big push (last 20 years or so) by the media to create a rivalry here (or intensify the ever so small existing rivalry) where one did not really exist prior.

I started following the Fighting Illini programs as a die hard fanatic around the late 50's , early 60's and the mildcats were an afterthought in FB and BB as a counted W before said season started...........Then they started advertising themselves as the state's B$G program , which drew more than a lol from me that bordered on a serious belly guffaw........

the last few years , for me , when they have had some victories against us has been hard for me to fathom as to the long period before of them being non-competitive against us......With this serious fiasco they are going through I fully expect a return to the earlier days of large margins in the score when we meet that will return order to the past.....

Will it happen ??.............I sure hope so , or that result will bring a lot of worry on my feeble little aged brain....And that's the last thing I need now.......I will keep that subject to myself as it's nobodies business but my own.......BTW , my collection of bikini & TR pics has grown in volume immensely and I enjoy them every single day ........I REALLY REALLY DO................................

I know we’ve talk about rivals before but for me, it’s Iowa, Mich, & Mizzou in no particular order. I find teams from the Hoosier state annoying (PU and Ind) but not as much rivals. Also, even though I don’t consider them a rival, I always appreciate playing OSU and having that as a trophy game.

It’s amazing how much confidence Fickel has brought to that program. I wish I could say it’s unwarranted but I just don’t know. Wisc had some talent last season but just seemed disjointed most of the year. Theoretically, If Coach B were to land back at Wisc, I think 9-11 wins would be possible with how that roster is constructed. But for Fickel, with the new offensive/defensive scheme, it seems unlikely. They aren’t quite built for that style of play (yet).

just another quick note, all the teams in the west (except NW) belive they have taken significant steps forward and think they’ll take the west. I’ve heard similar hype at iowa, and Neb that compares with the comments made by the Wisc writer. Minn seems more cautiously optimistic, similar to us. Purdue only returns 4 starting defenders and a new QB. I think they’ll come back to reality next season. We’ll see - there could be many broken-hearted fans this fall (us included). My personal goal is still to make a bowl game and let the rest be gravy.

That may be, but they’re the only school in the Big Ten who’d say we’re their biggest rival, and we’re likely stuck with them in perpetuity as our protected rival … I have no problem letting that reality at least carry SOME weight here.

I view it much like Tennessee/Vanderbilt and Georgia/Georgia Tech. You’d be hard-pressed to find a UGA fan who views GT as more of a rival than Florida and many might barely care about the game at all, but it will always carry some official-if-hollow status as a “rivalry.” I myself don’t really care about NU, and they’re way below the others on my list … but I think they have to be recognized as at least a token rival, if only in name. That’s how the rest of the world sees it, and even with Illini apathy, it would STILL carry much more of a two-way feeling than, say, Illinois/Michigan, which almost nobody considers any sort of actual rivalry, and UM fans give us so little thought that it comes across as embarrassing if we make too big of a deal of it.

We played ourselves into a hole of irrelevancy over the last several decades, but there is an alternate timeline where Illinois/Iowa is one of the best football rivalries in the conference. If we were keeping the West division, it would really have the chance to at least become a great one. :(

Agreed, which is all I ask as far as “discourse” for the West - the acknowledgment that it’s pretty wide open. I don’t see a clear favorite. And, as a long-tortured Illini fan, I’m ecstatic with the thought that we have a legitimate shot to compete in literally every single game on the schedule. I have not thought that entering a season since literally 2008, as even last year I had chalked Michigan up to a pretty sure loss and never could have imagined our 7-1 start.

I’m getting pretty damn excited!

I’d suggest they’re an ersatz rival, an artificial substitute for the real thing, typically inferior, e.g. “ersatz coffee“.

Around here (Peoria) you'll find a genuine Iowa rivalry, with many IA transplants and local families who’ve sent kids to Iowa. I haven’t seen much interest in NU games.

Agreed on all accounts. I was the same way. I could see a bowl game being realistic but the 7-1 was quite glorious. I ended up going to 4 games, including the game at Wisconsin. With the whole family there, it will be a cherished memory of ours for a long time. It was my boys first collegiate football game and they had a blast. As a fan, that’s all you can ask for.

Also, that Mich game will go down in Illini lore with the poor officiating. It was so bad, fan bases across the country were taking about it (the guy from Miss st put together a great breakdown of the rob job). It hurts but it adds to the growing list of reasons to not like Mich. The fumble game from 2000 was as bad or worse (see Bob’s story below. Please note the attendance that night 😳). In all, last year was a good one. The story lines and draft success were fun and marked a great year for Illinois football. Thanks Coach B.
