They track every type of three. Catch and shoot, step backs, side steps, contested, uncontested, pull ups, corner, top of arc, off ball scrrens, coming off down screens, etc.
Most players are best on open catch and shoots. That is what you ideally strive to create. It's why the three off of offensive rebounds is such a high percentage. The guy is open and can step into it in rhythm. It's why the NBA and now college parks three guys in the corners and a wing on the 3 line and runs ball screen action on top looking for kick outs. They can shoot or attack close outs from there.
It is not a complicated game, but everybody has to execute and take and hit their most make-able shots.
The number of contested and step back threes we took last year was simply bad basketball.
Th only guy we have had in recent years who could do that and make them was Plummer.
