Is Shannon just streaky from 3 or are there actual places and situations that he excels on the 3s. Right now he's feast or famine, but if we actually had a read on what's happening on the shots that he's making (off the dribble, top of the key, etc.) maybe we could increase his efficiency.
He seems to be a better with catch and shoot. He at times forces off balance/off the dribble, and by the eyeball test, it seems he shoots those at a much lower clip

Really like what we saw on this trip. This team is already really good defensively. 3 point shooting can improve for sure, and Damask will be a huge help with that. Also Luke will find his groove and shot better during the year. Good to see the free throw shooting get better every game though.

As of right now, I would say this team is a 3-4 seed with a chance to exceed that. Deepest team we've had in a while. Wouldn't be surprised if the kenpom at the end of the year says top 2-3 defensively and 30-35 offensively
Lol. Everybody is blowing these Euro teams out. Iowa has 31 made threes in two games. I think we evaluate this team as we compete against D1 talent.

My guess right now is a 5-8 seed. There is no way we are top 2-3 defensively in the country.

everyone knows we didn't face a murderer's row in Spain. would better competition been better? does a bear poop in the woods?

I think our players know that they're gonna have to really earn their tick. I also think they know that their ceiling is pretty flipping high. as a bonding exercise, couldn't get much better. playing some late summer games, even against weak competition, should whet their appetites entering the fall

Sometimes on the path just outside my tent along side of the woods, but that is a story for another day.

I consider these games to be mere appetizers we’ll before the main course — delicious and I’m glad they’re here, but offering nothing of nutritional value.

Having said that, we can probably extrapolate a few things, based on what we already know. Hawkins is in his fourth year. While he’ll improve on some things, he is what he is as far as three point shooting. He’s not going to radically become much better in that regard. Where he CAN improve is reducing his turnovers and looking to score more inside. If he does that, it’ll be a huge step toward us being a better team.

Likewise with TSJ. He’s in his fifth year and he’s likely not going to be a consistent three point shooter. He’ll get streaky from the arc, but he’ll have his clunkers as well. Where he can improve is providing constant leadership and not carelessly stepping back from that role at times throughout. His game is taking it to the hoop. Keep working on that.

The rest of the team has provided a small sample size to gauge whether they can make huge jumps in productivity, although the portal transfers probably won’t make much of a leap from what they provided at their previous stops. About the only thing we know for sure (or so it seems) is that Dain and Ty will continue to struggle from the free throw line. And Guerrier too. That might be our Achilles heel more this coming season than three point shooting.

They track every type of three. Catch and shoot, step backs, side steps, contested, uncontested, pull ups, corner, top of arc, off ball scrrens, coming off down screens, etc.

Most players are best on open catch and shoots. That is what you ideally strive to create. It's why the three off of offensive rebounds is such a high percentage. The guy is open and can step into it in rhythm. It's why the NBA and now college parks three guys in the corners and a wing on the 3 line and runs ball screen action on top looking for kick outs. They can shoot or attack close outs from there.
It is not a complicated game, but everybody has to execute and take and hit their most make-able shots.

The number of contested and step back threes we took last year was simply bad basketball.

Th only guy we have had in recent years who could do that and make them was Plummer.

Even in those highlights Rodgers doesn't look strong bringing the ball up on a break. If anything, it looks like Moretti could be our top pass-first PG, but then he is a defensive liability. Big ?'s still at the PG slot.

Is there a different video? Only play I saw in those highlights with Ty on a fast break was where he poked it away and then was 1-on-1 with a guy and finishes through contact for a +1.

My question is what team in the Big10 do you think is capable of full court pressing the Illini for an entire game and keep up with them athletically?

MSU probably. Other then that I'd gladly take the Illini against any other conference team in a game like that.

If anyone else wants to get in a full court slugfest with the Illini I think the depth and experience of Illinois will win out.

I personally would love to see Brad turn up the defensive pressure this year and press way more(Especially Purdue). Give me some 40 minutes of hell, press Virginia, Rick pitino Louisville teams. The only thing possibly holding Illinois back from that style is the lack of an interior shot blocker.

I really hope our point gaurd situation pans out. Unfortunately I can see us having a very similar season to last year. Finding out half way through the season the main thing holding us back from being a top 15 team is lack of solid point gaurd play. I hope I am wrong. The point gaurd is too important to be taking chances on.

I thought it would be interesting to consolidate the trip stats. See attached. Bad news: 3 pt and FT shooting was rediculously poor. Good news: Small sample size.
Thank you! I wanted to do this myself. Appreciate the info!

Thank you. How is it possible that Hawkins played 52 minutes and shot zero free throws?

If the games were on a FIBA size court the free throw line and 3 point lines are slightly different. The 3 point line is about a foot further back. Free throw line is about an inch further back. Not sure if the ball size/weight was different

No excuse for the shooting percentage Also not sure if guys were shooting further at NBA range could decrease percentages

I know the fear is that morretti won’t be able to guard guys in the big10, but he sure looks like a good distributor and floor spacer

shot is good too. offensively, he's ready to play. the crux is can he guard decently? that question wasn't answered in Spain.

That is the play I am referencing. It looks like he almost double dribbles right before he puts his shot up (after he taken the contact and made an additional dribble).

I agree wholeheartedly with your comment about the step back threes. I have even hears the coaching staff commenting on the fact that they do not work on that in practice. Why did this continue to occur last year?

2pt percentages are really good.

Iowa’s 1-2-2 variations.

They don't have to do it the whole game to impact the game. 3 minutes 3 different times. Create 5 turnovers. Huge impact.
