I chuckled, however, at the hills on the western horizon in that sketch of the stadium at the article's opening. I regularly admired that view from the east balcony long ago (and most recently last summer) and don't recall such landforms.

Semi-OT, but I was thinking the other day that for Champaign having this reputation (even among our fans) of being in the absolute depths of the flattest region of the Corn Belt, the community has a remarkable number of trees and pretty good landscaping. I understand that due to topography and longer winters, such a vibe might not be possible for us ... but we could get something in the ballpark. Having trees scattered throughout Grange Grove would really provide an immersive and (more importantly) unique-within-the-Big-Ten experience for all visitors to Memorial Stadium.

the main difference is their tailgating occurs on our equivalent of the Quad. they have fairly large areas amongst campus with lots of trees and some open spaces. its not occurring right next to their stadium , which is about a 3-4 block walk away. Down there, tailgating is taken to a WHOLE 'NOTHER LEVEL and is done by EVERYONE . there is nothing close to it anywhere in this country that I am aware of.
down there, they would use ALL available public spaces - like we should use all grass land in the six pack dorms if they were to critique our deal
those spaces are all "rented" out. its a huge money maker

This page from the campus landscape master plan shows what Grange Grove, southwest parking lots and the fields west of the stadium are proposed to look like. If this actually happens it would address a lot of what everyone is talking about.

Serious question. Illinois football sucked for many years until last years team. Brett clearly turned things around and the recruiting right now seems pretty good. This season not starting off well and be surprised if they win more than 6 games.
So, if you are a good football coach, what should be expected of you? One good season every 4-5 years or sustained success? Not saying he isn't the right guy so don't start pounding me. I realize he needs some time. My question is what should we expect from him and the program going forward? If this year and next year are back to 500 or below, are you fine with that?

Not to be negative, but with the addition of 4 pac10 schools, 2 of which are elite. And 2 that are better than average, my gut feeling is that over .500 seasons are unfortunately going to be hard to come by for us without a seismic shift. It's why I think this year is so important for momentum and recruiting as when you look at the schedule we have this year, it's an absolute cakewalk compared to what's coming. Assuming a 9 game B10 schedule, this is what we pretty much know based on what has been said:
1. OSU- fixed
2. Purdue - fixed
3. Northwestern - fixed
4. Likely Oregon or USC
5. Likely UCLA or Washington
The other 4 games will likely include at least 2 regional rivals (Wisky, Iowa, Minn, Ind, Neb) to help with travel and at most 2 randos. How I see it, that's going to be a tough schedule most years.
So here on out considering nothing dynamically changes, a good coach at Illinois could probably expect an over .500 season maybe once every 2 or 3 years on average in my opinion. I know that's not what we want to hear, but better than a 4-5 record in the B10 to come would have to be considered a really great year by our standards. Just doesn't leave much room for error with non-con scheduling to get to .500
I don’t think it’s as clear cut as wins and losses and the goal posts move when you have a good season and good rosters.
That being said I don’t think it’s too high a bar to go from a bowl every 5 years to missing a bowl every 5 years. But that’s my personal opinion.
Missing a bowl game the next couple seasons isn’t a death sentence in my opinion, but there better be some good excuses behind it.

Pretty impressive that our Friday night game on ESPN2 (!) outdrew Utah/Baylor on Saturday on ESPN AND UCLA on Saturday on CBS! It also goes (once again) to show how valuable it is to get off of BTN, as we outdrew Ohio State just because of what channel we were on. Interesting to compare it to the other ESPN2 games...
1.44 million for #20 Ole Miss at #24 Tulane (Saturday at 2:30 pm)
1.36 million for Illinois at Kansas (Friday at 6:30 pm)
294k for Purdue at Virginia Tech (Saturday at 11:00 am)

Point is that a lot of eyes will be on the Illini and Champaign!
