FAU lost 48-24. How is that playing them tough?
Certainly we've all seen games where the final score wasn't indicative of the tight battle on the field. I'm not saying that is the case here as I haven't looked up the recap/boxscore, but it could be. The charitable thing would be to assume that's what the poster meant, or provide evidence to the contrary.

Fair enough. FAU did lead in time of possession.

I'm really rooting for BB to be successful, but with the exception of Walters, his coordinator hires have been rough (I'm trying to be kind here). Is it too much to ask to be clearly better than a team like FAU at home? Happy with the win, but it's hard to find 4 more in the B10. Over 500 yards and we scored 23 points to win by 6, unacceptable. Not ready to play and dig a 1st qtr 0-10 hole to FAU, unacceptable. Line play is beyond weak. I don't get it, we have pieces, but we are never ready to play and constantly shoot ourselves in the foot with dumb penalties. The level of coaching has to be better and match the investment being made.

And no, I'm not calling for BB's head. Not even close. But changes have to be made to our approach on both lines and an offensive identity has to be established. What is Lunney trying to establish? We finally started running after we had worn down their defensive line a bit, but we have to be able to pound the ball against teams like this and avoid constant pressure on our qb early in games.

I'll be watching next week and hoping some of these things are addressed. Go Illini!
We're 10-6 in our last 16, with a competitive January bowl game against an SEC team and a top-10 difficult schedule so far in 2023. We're Illinois Football, what on earth are you hoping for?

And, if I may just say, the problem with comments like this (everywhere on the interwebs), is the faux indignation and exaggeration: "unacceptable," "unacceptable," "beyond weak," "never ready," "constantly shoot ourselves," "has to be better," "have to be made," "have to be able to," "constant pressure," etc.

Relax, Mate.

There were about 100 yards on two drives that ended in no points (ToD and end of half), the TD drives were 76, 85, and 94 yards. That already counts for almost 350 yards just on 5 drives.

BTW can't be many complaints about Lunney this week.

I just expect to look like we are a competent B10 program. That was what was so refreshing about last season. We were solid, for the most part, in just about all phases of the game. I guess last year's team was just able to overcome dumb penalties and mistakes more easily with a guy like Chase Brown and a better D. And, if I may say, if this fan base and staff is ok with silly penalties and mistakes we are going to remain bottom half of the league with teams like Oregon and USC starting to show up on the schedule soon.

I'm not sure exactly which fallacies are being committed here, but I'm certain nobody on here "is ok with silly penalties and mistakes," by definition, and even if every one of us were, it would have no bearing whatsoever on our place in the standings.

we had a magical 8 games last year that led more than a few people to be overly optimistic about where we stand as a program. We've still got a lot of work to do.

I've been cautiously optimistic about this season. Luke's first game had me dreaming of 8 wins, but going into the year I just wanted to get back to a bowl game and keep the momentum going. Still think that's very doable and I'm still cautiously optimistic that we could really steady ourselves and get to the 8 wins.

Saturday is desperation time for two teams. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out.

He’s part of the crowd that believes it’s our fault (the fans fault) that our teams have underperformed - that we haven’t had high enough expectations for the program and that’s why we stink.

Even though in college sports, the more support you give the program (financial support, attending games, etc) is what leads to better recruiting and better teams.

He thinks standing on his high horse with his pitch fork to try to get the fans angry at the best coaching staff we’ve had in the past 30 years is going to lead to more wins.

He couldn’t be more wrong.

Yeah it’s a win but

It’s so hard to watch this team now after experiencing 2022 and getting a taste of what it could be.

It’s like getting sent back to prison and having that laddle of gruel dumped on your metal tray after having been out on parole for a few months and feasting on steak and wine every night.
Funny analogy. Good one.

Best head coach in the last 30 years, no question. Last year I would have agreed with the best staff, but this one is struggling to find itself. The rest of your post makes no sense and is contradictory. On my "high horse" with my "pitch fork"? Laughable.

Are you speaking from personal experience? This has the ring of some truth . . . . 🤪

This is hilarious and about accurate.

A lot of those were given away. Here's what the East side looked like at Kickoff.View attachment 28196

And at the start of the 2nd.

I know people get real interested in the number of tickets sold/distributed, but if we can't get the actual butts in the actual seats, what does it matter? If it weren't Band Day, over a third of that East Balcony would have been empty. Yeah it's FAU, but if you're announcing attendance of over 50k, the attendance needs to look a LOT stronger.

Perfect weather and a better than average chance of an Illini victory one would think that those two factors alone would get butts in seats.

I can recall leaving the stadium more than once on a cold, dark, dank rainy day after the Illini were thrashed 35-to 7 by a ranked opponet.

Run blocking was much better in the 2nd half but it was still pretty rough for much of the game. Give Altmeyer time and he can make some plays although he had a couple overthrown deep balls to Williams who was WIDE open both times.

Tobe got a lot of playing time on defense and I was pretty impressed by his play. FAU challenged him a couple times on deep balls and he was able to come through.

Also what happened on that Beatty fumble? Watching live it sure looked incomplete but they didn't even review it. Ended up being points for FAU as a result

Overall not a great game but take a FG instead of turnover on downs in the first and have Feagin walk in for a TD at the end and people might be talking about it very differently.
I thought the replay they showed confirmed catch. Maybe if they showed it 25 times one might have seen the ball wiggle a bit, but looked like bang-bang, catch- fumble play to me. Frankly, I think there is a bit too much reviewing of plays and using stop action to go frame by frame, second by second. Probably in the minority with that take though.

I think Lunney called a decent game, especially in the second half outside of the swing pass to Beatty that led to the fumble. The offensive line was not holding up their end which limits both the running attack and the downfield passing game, which worked well when Luke either had time or bought himself some time.

A very weird vibe around that game, it felt like FAU was winning even when Illinois was essentially dominating the second and third quarters. The start was just so bad it felt like we couldn't shake it even up double digits.

I think there was some good potential shown by the young running backs and defensive backs, but if this o-line doesn't get figured out then it will be a struggle to get to six wins. Nice to see Altmyer bounce back and play well despite getting hit all game long.
I think Lunney is the problem with our offense. Too much trickeration with guys going East/West instead of North/South but this is compounded by the fact that he rarely stretches the field. So the defense is watching guys run all over the place, but they're coming down hill against all of it. So it is actually a negative to our players because they can't get any momentum going upfield.

Now if the safeties had to be concerned about getting beat deep and couldn't just key in on the QBs eyes and just go blow up the play, the tricks might work more, but... And there is too many cute little plays instead of just strapping on your helmet and just going out their and playing smashmouth football. Run downhill where even an ineffective play gets you a couple of yards.

I also think we need to use our more speedy RBs more. Love is living on big runs, take them away and his average looks terrible. McCray has struggled until today. When your Oline can't maintain blocks well, you need someone that can see hole and get through it quickly, because it is not going to be there long. Laughery looked significantly faster than any other RB in his few touches yesterday. I only saw 2 of Feagin's runs, one was almost comical how little burst he has from start. However, I think he will be a Derrick Henry type RB. Henry is a freak and he is also quite slow from start, but once he gets up to speed he's a nightmare. So like Henry, I think Feagin is going to need an Oline that can control the line.

But Lunney needs to either stretch the field more or run less razzle dazzle and get the team going North/South.

They had completions yesterday for 42, 45, and 46 yards plus several other deep shots. Several of the interception against PSU were on deep balls. It's not like they aren't trying them but it's hard to go for big plays when you don't have time to throw the ball. Lunney does like to get cute some times but so does every other team in college football.

Agreed. Unless offensive line play improves we will need to rely on our quickest backs.
