Why was Feagan sliding down such a great play? I get it - run out the clock but he was clear to the end zone and putting us up by 13. Why not score???

One snap to end the game vs extra point, kickoff, and several defensive plays. Just get it over with fast and no chance of any injuries.

Edit: I would have liked to see him score too btw but it makes sense.

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not but I had to have this conversation with my mom too. You guarantee they never get the ball back. Time was limited, yes, but they still had a timeout as well. A quick score from them and an onside kick recovery were all sitting there quoting Robert, “we’re Illinois football and we can’t be trusted”

^This. Many of us that play fantasy football will remember the infamous Brian Westbrook play towards the end of the 2007 season when he had a clear path to the end zone late in a game in Dallas but went down at the 1-yard line so that the Eagles could run out the clock. It's one of the more infamous moments in fantasy football as there were a lot of matchups that swung on that play.

It was the high football IQ play. The only possible way to lose the game was by scoring (FAU was trying to give up the score if you look closely at the two hand touch they played). To me, this means that we have good coaching. I am sure he would have had a good talking to if he went in and scored.

About as likely as being struck by lightning, so either way you win the game. Sort of a theoretical debate. Avoiding injuries might be the best reason.
This is Illinois football, so if Feagan had run it in FAU would have scored a TD in one play, recovered on onsides kick, and then scored another TD on the following play. It would have been featured on Sportscenter and we'd all be cursing the football gods.

I am just curious how many posters on here would have been screaming "they're running up the score" if another team had run that TD in so late in the game. Then add the number who would have cursed the staff for giving the opponent another chance at offense. It was an extremely hi IQ play for a freshman and absolutely the correct play to make. There was no team reason to go in for the score. No argument can change that.

They had completions yesterday for 42, 45, and 46 yards plus several other deep shots. Several of the interception against PSU were on deep balls. It's not like they aren't trying them but it's hard to go for big plays when you don't have time to throw the ball. Lunney does like to get cute some times but so does every other team in college football.
My issue with Lunney is the times he chooses to "get cute" are often bewildering, because if they don't work it puts us in really bad positions. There's some unnecessary risk taking at the wrong times that kills momentum in critical moments, gives field position back to the opponent, or leads to turnovers that are hard to overcome and make the game harder to win.

I think Lunney is the problem with our offense. Too much trickeration with guys going East/West instead of North/South but this is compounded by the fact that he rarely stretches the field. So the defense is watching guys run all over the place, but they're coming down hill against all of it. So it is actually a negative to our players because they can't get any momentum going upfield.

Now if the safeties had to be concerned about getting beat deep and couldn't just key in on the QBs eyes and just go blow up the play, the tricks might work more, but... And there is too many cute little plays instead of just strapping on your helmet and just going out their and playing smashmouth football. Run downhill where even an ineffective play gets you a couple of yards.

I also think we need to use our more speedy RBs more. Love is living on big runs, take them away and his average looks terrible. McCray has struggled until today. When your Oline can't maintain blocks well, you need someone that can see hole and get through it quickly, because it is not going to be there long. Laughery looked significantly faster than any other RB in his few touches yesterday. I only saw 2 of Feagin's runs, one was almost comical how little burst he has from start. However, I think he will be a Derrick Henry type RB. Henry is a freak and he is also quite slow from start, but once he gets up to speed he's a nightmare. So like Henry, I think Feagin is going to need an Oline that can control the line.

But Lunney needs to either stretch the field more or run less razzle dazzle and get the team going North/South.
Better offensive line play would negate most of what you are stating. But until that happens, we'll never know!

The chances of losing this game up 13 with 90 seconds left was virtually nil despite being Illinois. Would have made the box score look better and impress fans and recruits. To me it’s more indicative of the one thing about Bret that I don’t like: Getting conservative and playing not to lose. Score score and score somemore.

I can't help but wonder how much of the angst on this page is down to Kaden Feagin sliding instead of scoring late in the fourth. I understand why folks thought it was a smart play, but the TD would have pretty much put things out of reach as well. And 30-17 is a lot more convincing score than 23-17 even against a very bleah team like FAU.

Ten takeaways:

(1) I'm assuming that Feagin was prepared by the staff going into that endplay to go down or it was something discussed during camp, but kudos to him. I still think you go up two scores whenever you can because there is no such thing as complete risk elimination. Still, good run by Feagin to end it and making a snap decision from a true freshman.
(2) I'll go down in the ship for Altmyer. That he can even function with this offensive line is a testament to his arm and scrambling abilities. He's not perfect but he has plenty of tools to succeed for multiple years.
(3) About the offensive line... 120th in pass blocking (out of 133). 82nd in run blocking. I mentioned two weeks ago about the risk of moving Adams to right tackle. That risk is playing out in real time. Guess when Adams moved to right tackle (one row for each game):

These are PFF scores, ranging from 0-100. When the initial issue was mis-playing a guard at right tackle, it's a tough pill to swallow to repeat the issue with your other starting guard. These numbers are pretty close to Crisler's first two games. The offensive line answers are Kreutz at center, Pearl at left tackle, and Adams at left guard. I'm out on Crisler being a starter moving forward. His doing better at RG than RT but it's still bad. Again, the staff has earned their bones on offensive line development over the years. Maybe they see what Crisler is providing during practice and games, and believe he is starting to progress. If that's true, he really needs to turn the corner soon. Assuming Crisler full-time or a mix with Slaughter/Gesky is the answer at RG, still a big question at RT. Whitenack got a couple RT snaps at Penn State. Dream scenario would have been a FAU blowout so he could have gotten 15ish snaps there, but that didn't happen. It's also scary to roll out a RT for the first time, like ever, as you enter B1G conference schedule. We know nothing about Whitenack besides anecdotal comments. Maybe the staff really likes him? Maybe they know him and Henderson are not ready and it's why they are trying every possible Adams/Crisler/Slaughter/Gesky/Barlev combination with the RT + guard spots?
(4) OL part II (happy thoughts). Kreutz is still very solid. Happy he'll be around for two more seasons. For those keeping score, his PFF grades are still higher than Avery Jones'.
(5) Feagin and Laughery showed something that game. Find a way to get them more carries, especially early. I've become a McCray hater. He has 16 carries for 36 yards in the first half this season. Not sure I love him for short yardage over a Altmyer sneak. Just mothball him until the second half, preferably the 4th quarter.
(6) Isaiah Williams is such a joy to watch. Great security blanket for QB. Provides an important dynamic, athleticism to this WR corp.
- He's now 10th all-time in receiving yards. He's on pace for 72 catches for 1,332 yards this season, which would vault him to 2nd all-time in receiving yards and catches.
(7) Offense is still looking for ways to stretch the field (offensive line issues withstanding). Didn't expect their most effective solution being the tight ends. Two, 40+ yard catches for TEs today was a nice relief. Also will help stretch out linebackers and make the offensive line's job (slightly) easier for run blocking. Reiman and Moore both on pace for 400+ yard receiving seasons.
(8) Defensive line is fully back and running at 100%. Even the backups (Barnes, Edwards, Bryant) are putting up solid grades.
(9) Tobe had a fantastic game. He's been targeted six times with only one catch for four yards. He's still only at ~40 snaps, so it's only a good start. With the Strain + Nicholson injuries, plus Bailey + Hill out for the year at safety, any great performances in the secondary, especially from younger players, are very refreshing.
(10) Hugh Robertson has put that bad 2022 behind him and locked down the starting job for the next 1.5 seasons. He's now T-3rd in B1G punting average. 4th in Net.

Season 4 Episode 3 GIF by The Office

None of this makes sense. While improbable, there is still a fraction of a chance of losing the game while up 13, statistically signifantly higher than kneeling the clock out up 6.

You really think the box score matters that much? Recruits don't care about 7 points, and most fans would still complain about not covering the spread against a "bad team". Heck, even the defense was trying to give up the score (it was FAU's only chance of winning).

The last sentences are the craziest. A smart football IQ play should never be called playing conservative and not to lose. Literally scoring was the only real chance we had of losing (unless you expected a fumble on a kneel out).

Great thread, thanks for sharing. Wild that coming into the season center was our biggest question mark on the o-line, yet through 4 games Kreutz has been one of our most stable pieces.

I don’t understand people. There was a family of four about two rows down from us, dad, mom, a little boy and his big sister, msybe third grade. She was all dressed up for the game, right down to the “ILLINI” ribbon in her hair. And she was enjoying the game immensely.

Then with about three minutes remaining on the clock, the family gets up and leaves. The little girl is last in line. Crestfallen doesn’t begin to describe her, gloomy as a rainy Monday.

I don’t understand the rush for the gate. So you can get on the way home, out of the parking lot ten minutes quicker. I’ll admit to bring something of a romantic or maybe a goofball, but if I just spent $200 on tickets not to mention other expenses of attending a game, I’m getting my money’s worth, soaking it all in, singing the Alma Mater with the band and the team. Leave early? I think not.

Especially not breaking a little girl’s heart in the process.

If I hadn't watched the game, reading this thread I'd think FAU's offense dominated us most of the game. They got a field goal and a TD off short fields in the first quarter (FG from a fumble and TD from a dumb late hit by Robertson) and then their offense couldn't do anything until they got a TD in garbage time with less than 5 minutes left. The penalties are improving but we're still getting the couple of bad ones a game that just kill us and directly or indirectly lead to score. The Oline also still needs to figure their !!!! out. Still not too worried going forward. It's pretty hard to argue that the rest of the Big 10 West has looked much better than us, we at least scored on Penn State.
