Illinois 82, Kansas 75 (Exhibition) Postgame

Illinois played Kansas last year in a secret scrimmage, and now this year in an exhibition game (which, apparently, was originally also going to be a secret scrimmage) so maybe we can keep it going, move it to become a regular season game, and then this match up can become a rivalry game every year?

What's the downside of playing a public exhibition game like this every year for some good cause?
When asked about this, BU said he would be open to doing a fund-raising game like this again, but that there are advantages to closed exhibitions, such as being able to stop the action and teach in the moment.

I know what the fans would vote for…

as an added bonus, it wouldn't have affected us at all since coleman's 4th foul was so bad i refuse to believe it would actually be called in a game where he could foul out.
4th AND 5th were both

I think it is now time to award Hunter D. a Participation Trophy for his games vs the Illini. We could call it the Sisyphus award for continuing to play in the face of perpetual futility.
Yeah - we're the only big ten team he hasn't beaten - which is hilarious given how much he ragged on Illinois and its fans. He's had to eat his words in a way that rarely comes around in sports - it's glorious

Obviously not enough data on 23/24 squad to make a definitive statement. I think the game/team vs UCLA last year, would have given this Kansas team a good fight and likely a win. The 22/23 team peaked in preseason and kept fighting all season but not showing improvement. Hoping the 23/24 version builds on this effort and despite a very tough schedule they continue to grow and improve.

Nice to see Illinois not get behind by double digits (which regularly happened in 22/23).
Well, except for the starting point guard who quit in December.

I saw at least 3 instances where Terrance drove to the bucket going to the right. It wasn't from a pass, it was him taking his defender one on one to the bucket going to his right. He looked strong and had a step on the defender and I believe was fouled each time. With this in his arsenal, even if only 2 to 3 times a game it will help keep defenders more honest and over playing to his left as much as they had last year.
I thought I read he developed a little pull up jumper as well, although I don't believe I've seen it yet. Would love to see that added to his arsenal as well.

A few rotation things I see here.

Coleman and Dain were never on the floor together.
Guerrier and Goode were never on the floor together.
Domask and Harmon were never on the floor together.
There was only one minute where we had neither TSJ nor Coleman on the floor.

I'll add that it probably says something about Domask that he was the only guy to play 3 different positions on the night.

And we did it all without a PG.

Illini are creating an entirely new template of play here. Just like running backs have mostly become annonynous in much of College and Pro football... the Illini are leading the charge to de-emphasize the need for any Point Guard. This has to be the reason... because I can't think of another reason why the Illini still don't have a point guard after all this time.

I guess they are trying to prove a point... or perhaps it should be said... NOT prove a point. Or something.

Seriously though, the main problem with this is when the other team is pressing and you need superior ballhandling skills to beat the press and get something going. But as long as the Illini work hard on those ballhandling skills... this problem goes away.

Just always pass the ball quickly and prudently and get to your spots on the floor (and HIT those shots when some Illini un-point-guard gets you the ball) and you'll do just fine.

Domask and Harmon played the last minutes together along with Coleman, Quincey and Terrance

Well, I'd vote to have the secret scrimmage. There's a purpose to scrimmages. I'd like to keep that. When it's public, against a team like this, there's too much pressure to win instead of doing the things you're supposed to do in a scrimmage to learn more about your team and prepare for the season.

I don't want to rain on the parade too much but the Illini will once again be super inconsistent shooting the ball if they're relying on Shannon and Coleman to shoot 2/3's of their 3's.

Obviously they were really the only ones that took many and were hitting tonight but would like to see Goode, Domask, Harmon, and Guerrier knocking down shots with regularity if this team is going to be good.

One of the things that stand out to me is that Harris, Rodgers, and Dain are all non-shooters....it's almost as if they will have to compete for time, as it is difficult to have 2 total non-shooters out there (when you have other good options!) It is nice to have have lots of options on the team.

Can Rodgers/Dain play a pick/roll game if there are two shooters on the wings? Rodgers can finish at the rim if given the chance. Dain can score in close. I do worry about Rodgers getting his pocket picked coming down the lane.
