I'm not saying they won't be good, what I'm saying is if we are afraid to play UK at home when they have a decent amount of change hitting them we are in bad shape as a program.

We're not afraid to play anyone. There is no substance to this rumor of us backing out. If we did, it would be because the scheduling couldn't work, not that we are afraid.

They're going to be losing a ton of seniors and difference makers. Playing underclassmen and/or unproven players is going to lead to some regressed play. Some of those players could be stars in a year or two but they're going to make mistakes along the way. There's a reason why Connelly touts the importance of returning production when calculating how team's will perform.
I just find it annoying that our fans say things like this without considering how their point could also apply towards our 5-7 team as Johnny Newton, Keith Randolph, and (TBA) are leaving Champaign.

We're going to have to definitely be better than we were this year in order to win six games.

How do we get there from here?

I'm with you there, too much constant optimism can be blinding. It's a delicate balance of (a) this is an Illinois fan board, people should be able to let their fandom and optimism cup spill over to (b) how many times are we allowing people to project 8-9 wins every season before we call ourselves a cult?

My point was you were commenting about Kansas being better. Ignoring the Illinois part of the competition, I do not expect Kansas to be better in 2024 than they were in 2023. These things are not absolutes, and just like many of us were optimistic about Illinois going into 2023, Kansas fans can make similar arguments: Jalon Daniels was injured for almost the entire 2023 season and he's coming back! Leipold is going to have some of his own recruits entering their third year and ready to contribute! They've shown an ability to develop guys over the past three years, why shouldn't we assume more of the same!??

With 3 near certain losses(@PSU, @Oregon, Michiggan)...

Our 6 most possible wins are probably EIU, CMU, Minnesota, Purdue, @RU, @Northwestern

Doesn't the B1G require everyone to play at least 1 OOC game against a power opponent? There are exceptions obviously which is how Michigan got away with it the last two years by scheduling Uconn far enough in advance and having a game get canceled late because of realignment. The late cancelation could apply, but I'm doubtful since we'd be the ones canceling. So I don't think we can cancel just to add another buy game.

This could be as simple as that Bleacher Report guy is just wrong, but if he's right, the only logical reason that I can think of would be some sort of larger shuffling of schedules among the power conferences, and this is just the first game that's leaked to be changing.

Curious -- so we think any of BB's assistant coaches will be departing this off-season?

yes, provided it's by the deadline
I can’t find much on this. Last year I found an article that said they have 72 hours to change their mind. This year I can’t find anything that says that. Jan 15th is the deadline to enter is all I see on a NFL rules site.

Asking for no particular reason but can players declare and still come back like in bball?
Declare for the portal or for the nfl draft? I think for the draft, it depends on whether they have hired an agent and what type of agent. For the portal, I think they can return if the coach is willing to have them back.

“Looking ahead to 2024...”

We first must look back on 2023 and send a big Thank You to the Powers-That-Be. The rule changes they made to speed up the game and clock have worked out very well. The games move along better and without those four-hour-long marathon sessions that were too much for players and fans.

We now get better football being played in a more eye-friendly time window. They got this one right. (And the NFL did the same).

You must not have been at the Indiana game. Total duration 3 hrs. 54 mins. Granted, there was one overtime period, but I recall pointing out at the game when the game was exactly 3 hours old, we were just starting the 4th quarter. Lots of passing, replays, and injuries resulted in a way longer than usual game.
Indiana @ Illinois 11/11/23: KICKOFF TIME: 11:01 AM END OF GAME: 02:56 PM DURATION: 03:54
