Illinois 97, Missouri 73 Postgame

Something I commented to my friend last night is that his handles look so much tighter and more comfortable compared to early in the year. He's doing a lot more probing of the defense and creating space when pressured.

Also as a team had only 10 turnovers for game. Are we still worried about being able to handle a press?
If I understood correctly BU said we averaged 1.7 points per possession when the opponents pressed. He is hoping more teams press. Quite different from the conversation here.

Tell me you don’t know basketball without telling me you don’t know basketball. This post is hilarious 😂😂Did you even watch the game?
Yeah Missouri missed a lot of wide open 3’s
Just like Illinois did in last years game 7-31 or 22.6%.

Missouri 6-27 or 22.7% So good defense first half and then bad defense the 2nd half? 5-10 2nd half.

Tell me you watched the game and didn’t just look at the stats

Once again if you actually watched the game you’d realize that MO went to a different offense set in the 2nd half, played a lot of booty ball, which opened up some outside shots. So yeah, statistically and to the naked eye, the D clearly was not as sharp the 2nd half. Did anyone suggest that ALL 1st half misses were b/c of stifling D? No. But if you couldn’t see some lockdown pressure in this first half you’re just ridiculously negative or a parody account.

Tend to agree so the Illinois 22-23 team played a bunch of great defensive teams?

Missouri came into the game shooting like 37% from three. Their leading scorer was 1st in the entire country in 3 point shooting percentage. There was nary a good look for them in the 1st half. The only good looks they got from 3 was the 7'5" kid because we didn't even guard him out there.

Some observations and then it's time to move on to FD--a team that THIS Illinois team should pound into oblivion.

At first, I wonder why Freshmen DGL didn't play that much? Then I thought some more and realize that Ty is going to need all the experience he needs to run the PG position. The more he's out there the better he will become in the future. This team is going to need him. Also, it's another player that BU developed tremendously and can boast about it to future recruits. Also, the 7/8 man rotation (as of now) needs more reps, so towards the end of the season, they will be in shape. And plus, their next game is a week away, so "suck it up."

In this game, Domask and Ty had some turnovers in the backcourt that cannot happen in tight games. Yes, it was a blowout win, and it didn't matter. However, "Big Boy" programs fix their issues--even the small ones.

In a perfect world, the free throw shooting could've been better. Since the Illini have been making a higher percentage of their FTs as of late, we now have higher expectations-- and so should this coaching staff.

If Domask can hit his open threes, QG keep hitting his threes and CH scoring his points within the offense, I see Illinois at 7 - 1 in the Big Ten with an overall record at 17 - 3 and being a solid #2 seed. Then Jan. 30th comes and the Illini are at OSU.

I noticed DGL didn't "shoot" right away when he got in there--he did miss his only three-point attempt. Hang in there, DGL. I have a feeling in one of these Big Ten Games, you will hit 3/4 threes to put a game away from a future opponent; this will occur on your homecourt.

Hansberry needs to play more.

Now that's just plain mean.

That AJ Redd schooling of the hapless Miznoz guard off the dribble was just a spectacularly savage conclusion to the beating. I was watching the monitor in the bar from around 15 feet away and at first I thought to myself "that can't be AJ; that's gotta be Justin... man, I didn't know he could move like that." Then I saw Justin jumping up and down like a madman on the bench.

Also: Coach TA doin' some Riverdance over there on the sideline.

Domask is a good 3 pt shooter, something is off. Yesterday, he was 4-12 overall and 0-7 from 3's (mostly wide open). BU said earlier that he was one of the leaders in college bball last year from deep 3's or NBA 3's. I believe he will find his stroke, I'm sure he is taking a bunch in practice and workouts.

AJ I believe was a historically good player for St. Ignatius which played Simeon downstate last year. He isn't Div 1 good, but he would school 99% of high school level players.

Getting players's names wrong is different than a spelling error. Also, that wasn't the point of Skydub's post. No need to get defensive. You could've stopped with "typo error from my phone."

Is it finally safe to utter TSJ’s name in the same breath as all time Illini greats, without being shouted down?
It‘s not an insult. What isn’t he doing at an elite level? A blur in the open court, a menace on defense, finishes in the paint, hits his 3’s, rebounds, finds teammates, sets a great example of what it takes to be great at this level…
Enjoy it, folks.
I’d love nothing more than to have the discussion after this season to ask if the 2023/24 TSJ + CoHawk team is better than the 2020/21 Ayo + Kofi team.

He's just in his head a bit right now. All 3pt shooters go through an ice cold streak at some point. It's a frustrating thing and you start questioning if one will ever go down. The good news is that typically these streaks go away as suddenly as they appear and they're replaced with a red hot one.

To put things in perspective, Marcus has been a really consistent volume 34.8% 3pt shooter the past 2 seasons with much worse overall shot quality. Currently he's shooting 10 for 51 or 19.6%. Considering he's on pace for roughly 153 threes through the BTT, he'd be hitting at around a 43 for 102 or 42.1% clip from here on out for an average shooting season for him. And while obviously stats don't work this way, needless to say, I'm not at all worried. The scalding hot streak is coming- just getting the cold streak out of the way before B10 season

Read the first 6 or so pages and not the rest so please pardon me if this has been discussed.
I'm 100% in favor of NIL
I'm 100% in favor of players getting 1 free transfer
But it's games like this that get me thinking.
Do rivalries only matter to us fans anymore? Before the game I saw a video of former players talking about Braggin' Rights and now much they hated Mizzou. Is that gone forever now? If our best players are going to be transfers, only here for a year or 2 at most, is there enough time for the guys on the team to build up hostility for games like this?
Listening to Dee talk about how much he hated Mizzou just got me thinking. If we are in the business of going after hired guns every year where does the animosity come from?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for whatever gets us the best team possible. I'm more just wondering out loud if team (read player) rivalries are even going to be a thing going forward?
All I'm saying is I want every player on the team to hate Mizzou, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, etc. as much as I do, but I fear that will never be the case again.
Just sad if this is a casualty of the new system.

I'm pretty sure you don't see DGL and HBerry much because BU wants as many minutes with his normal rotation so that they continue to build their comfort level and continuity. Once you've set your 6-7 this far into the season, there's just no real reason to go deep on the bench unless foul trouble or last couple minutes mop up.

You can tell this rotation is feeling better and better with every game. They looked very comfortable breaking the press and playing up tempo. Crisp passing, smart decisions, great spacing and movement.

DGL and HBerry's time will come.

You also have to ask yourself, “is hate really that important?”

I understand and love the rivalry. It still means a lot to our guys, even the transfers. It may not be hate that drives them but they want to win because of how much it means to our fan base. So some may really dislike Mizzou and others do it for the love of the fan base. Whichever it is, it does not make the win any less sweeter.
