I would be shocked if the panel overrides the suspension. But it does seem possible that as the University/DIA get access to more evidence, they might eventually determine a misdemeanor is worst case and penalize appropriately.
I tend to agree that the University doesn't want to look soft on crime, even if every bone in their body tells them that TSJ should not be charged with rape. I could see them maintaining the suspension for now and waiting until some "new information" comes in and then lifting the suspension. Though, in the other thread, someone mentioned that the accuser had done this before (obviously, I have NO idea if this is true, and even then, it does not mean nothing happened).

Maybe I'm too "glass half full", but he referred to the University having no tolerance for sexual abuse of any kind at least twice. Which makes me think he thinks the incident in the bar IS something the University has to distance itself from. But, again, just my opinion.
He can't exactly go around condoning athletes engaging in sexual activity in public, but he didn't seem to condemn him for it either.

I have read the entire message board after the initial suspension and up to this post, read what has been said. I believe it sad at how there is a "belief" that the legal system is corrupt or a victim coming forward is immediately doubted. I keep reading how great of a human TSJ is (which is reasonable). Meanwhile people Google a DA and immediately start hammering home how off kilter she is. I can appreciate the loyalty to Illini sports but I think people need to take a step back and really think this through. After watching/listening to JW speak I believe one of one of two things, either TSJ withheld details and they took him for his word OR details were divulged and JW&CO decided that money and success were more important than setting a standard meanwhile hoping this would blow over.

TSJ shouldn't be allowed to play again for the U of I unless he is completely acquitted of all of charges. Plain and simple. As a man, father, and brother there is ZERO tolerance for this. From a misdemeanor to a felony. . . .zero tolerance.

Yes I am correct. And the business day calendar (if it is business days) started yesterday, not as of the press conference.
The clock would usually start the next business day. If the suspension came down at 4:30 pm, it likely would not have to happen within 24.5 hours.

So Friday is business day #1. Tuesday, January 2nd is business day #2.

Edit: Piper's tweet says 48-hour window, so that would be tomorrow.

Boy I hope you alI’s take on this is correct. I feel like that panel is not going to allow him to play until more information is obtained. It does sound like the Lawrence PD is just terrible. How can you let an obviously high profile case go from a charge on 12/5 to 12/27 for a warrant for his arrest?
This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

I think so far the biggest fail is not to educate the players that is Kansas, fingerbanging is rape.

And to always identify yourself as a player by which team you are on. So they don’t assume wrong and feel lied to later.

Listening to Whitman’s comments I’m confident that if there is a way to resolve this that they will. And, that possibly Shannon could still play again for Illinois.

Cute how Kansas DA knew they were going to charge him by December 5, yet by some random miracle they waited until after the Missouri game to do so.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven. But thats the world we live in. Gotta rally and next man up.

Go Illini.

If he remains suspended until it is resolved by Kansas and he ultimately is exonerated, he will have been cheated out of his present and possibly future basketball status. The accuser and the Kansas legal prosecutors will just walk away unharmed. This would be a huge miscarriage of justice. If he is determined to be guilty of something beyond being stupid, he will pay the appropriate penalty in the end. But to be suspended by the University of Illinois while this "issue" is slow-walked through the legal process is cruel and unnecessary punishment to him, his team, the U of I, the fans, and the teams he would play against. Let him play!!!!

All of this must be mortifying for TSJ - rightfully if true, but just horrible if not. I don't care at all about his consensual encounters and I don't think Whitman, Underwood, a 3-person panel, or the attendees at a press conference do either.

Things will get settled one way or another from and by the principal parties involved in this situation in their own time. And all parties will need time after that to learn and heal from the process once it is resolved. And that will be one track of the entire episode.

But there is another track. The rest of the team – the entirety of the Illini campus family – Illini alums – and the rest of Illini Nation had nothing to do with this incident whatsoever (as far as we know).

My point? There are many ‘innocent’ people who do not deserve to be hurt or punished by this situation. Start with the rest of the Illini roundball team. As I have said before, these young men have a very short window to play ball in during their college years. It’s here and then it’s gone forever. And most of these guys are not going professional and so their college ball years mean everything to them.

Of course their team fortunes on the court will be seriously impacted by what has happened here. But they deserve to have a chance to play ball to the best of their ability and have fun with that and enjoy and cherish their college years as much and as fully as they can. And fans need to have the fun of cheering on their heroes and be able to put aside heavier issues for the duration of a basketball game.

As with all of us – the Illini team will use this as a learning experience and a test of character. But any time an unexpected challenge and curve ball comes your way... your duty is to carry on -- learn something - and minimize its affects on the innocent parties around it.

And if and when a mistake or error in judgment has happened... the effects of that error must not to allowed to encroach upon and ruin lives of the innocent.

I think this is my takeaway as well, especially since there doesn't seem to be anything new that the DIA would have learned about since the suspension was first announced yesterday. Unless TJ or a representative for him is allowed to make a case in front of the DIA for reinstatement.

And to be honest, that is probably the smart thing for them to do to protect the school's reputation. But it does seem to open the door a sliver more than a lot of us thought would be possible.

Okay, I just watched this with my wife. She’s a nurse and I’m in consulting, so we have no legal expertise. With that said, I actually kind of wanted to post my/our immediate or “raw” reactions BEFORE I overthought this … besides, a lawyer type will be more than happy to correct me if I’m wrong, right?

1. As others have said … Whitman is a treasure. He impresses yet again. Regardless of how this all turns out, I’m confident he’ll do what’s best for Illini Athletics.

2. Like others, I kind of got the vibe that if you could read Whitman’s mind there, it’d paint a rosier picture than we have on the surface. Totally guessing, but it came across to me like, “We are very smart and cautious here at the DIA, and I’m not dumb enough to say anything too specific during an investigation … but if it isn’t obvious by my recap of the actions we’ve taken thus far, we are FAR from convinced by this story, and we aren’t going to hang TJ out to dry based on what we consider a shaky allegation.”

3. On that note, I almost wonder if a possible “win” for the DIA and Terrence is if the panel continues his suspension IF they also believe this will soon get watered down? For example, if more facts come out that discredit the allegation or the charges are decreased (can this happen?), they can reinstate him at that time while not looking like they rushed this.

4. All in all, I certainly feel better. This still well my end in a tragic manner, but my gut says TJ is innocent and deserves for the DIA to have his back if/when it becomes “safe” to do so. I also think we’ve been trained as a society lately to never trust your intuition (instead ALWAYS preferring some allegedly “objective” measure even when that’s not available), and I think that’s wrong … I believe your intuition can be spot on just as often as it’s misguided, and it shouldn’t be ignored.

Josh’s repeated comments about the process being so long and Illini athletes often “not having that kind of time” certainly seems intentional to bring up.

Josh Whitman stated that Terrence can play if there is a resolution to the legal process or the 3 person DIA panel votes to reinstate him before the legal process finishes. His status is on life support, but not dead yet - my words, not his.

Josh also stated that the panel is determinary, not advisory. Neither he the AD nor Robert Jones the Chancellor can overrule it, and whatever decision it makes is final.
New information can cause the panel to reconvene
