So teams now in the top 4 should back up? We are number 9 now, have played amazingly well in the last 2 games, and have an excellent chance of going in and knocking off #1.

You do whatever gets you through the day, but I'll slow down when I'm dead.

Well, we know we can compete and win this game, but now I think this has the potential to be a 2004/05 Wake Forest type game where we are up 10+ and we all look around at each other and go "holy sh$t, we really are this good!"

I would like to see us run run run....and then run some more....

keep their guards and especially Edey moving up and down the court ...that should help eliminate Edeys touches and wear him down and help keep our bigs out of foul trouble. If Rodgers and Domask try backing their guards down, wouldn't surprise me to see Purdue come out in some kind of half court trap pressure D that will force them to give the ball up quicker or turn it over....the team with fewer TO's will win this game.

I don’t see Dain getting much tick this game unless Coleman gets into foul trouble - it removes our biggest advantage.

Will be curious to see how we defend Edey down low. I wouldn’t mind letting him get his 20 & 10 while trying to limit the guards from going off from 3.

With Edey drawing 9.7 fouls per 40 (for comparison, Terrence was averaging 6.7), it's a big part of their formula for winning (e.g., they shot 48 free throws and scored 71 points in total in their win over Tennessee).

He rarely fouls out and averages only 2.0 fouls per 40, so on average is netting Purdue 7.7 fouls called per 40 by himself, which is pretty amazing. (For comparison, Terrence was netting us 4.4 fouls per 40 this season and Kofi netted us 4.2 fouls per 40 in his final season). Coleman will need to remain disciplined on defense to stay on the court.

Recall that last season's game at Mackey in early March was a tale of two halves, losing badly in the first half (47-26) and coming back strong in the second half (45-29 good guys), make it a 1 point game with just over a minute left before losing by 5 (despite Matthew Mayer shooting 1-10 from 3). Purdue is improved since and we have gotten much better and more connected, so will be interesting.

Edey is averaging over 25 ppg in their losses over the last two seasons (had 35 in the loss to Northwestern), so he is going to get his regardless. Outside of that match-up, we present some interesting challenges for them, but will need to take advantage.

If we bring it the entire game, play tough but disciplined defense and get a fair whistle on the road vs Edey, think we have a decent shot of pulling out the W. Though 2 out of 3 of those things probably won't be enough to get it done on the road.

I think we'll see a lot more of Dain this game and that Brad rested him in the second half of the NW game so we can use him in all capacities Friday.

Think this’ll be a classic. Not going to predict we win but I really love how we matchup with Purdue. If I remember correctly we got blitzed last year in the first 10 minutes than really dominated Purdue for the final 15-20 minutes or so to make it a game at the end… need an A+ Coleman game and his confidence and health is at a season high… can’t wait to see how we matchup win or lose, love our guys.

Agreed, and my wife and I were confused why he got so few minutes tonight after playing really well. I was definitely thinking how much we’d need him Friday.
I would agree didnt understand why he didnt sub him in a little to rest Coleman. Think Brad seriously wasn't taking his foot off of the gas pedal nor NW throats.. NW is a bad match up for Dain and his inability to switch who he is defending.. As was obvious BB would have taken Dain to the wood shed. Coleman not so much..

Brad was keeping Dain chomping at the bit. You want to be part of a beatdown? Go eat Edey.

We’ve definitely got a shot.

Edey is perhaps the most giant decoy in history of college basketball (literally and figuratively!). He is dominant but he will be dominant no matter what and the key to beating Purdue is disrupting their guards. And we can do that.

I love Smith’s game, he’s tough as nails. But you can speed him up. If we can contain Boo we can contain Smith.

Fletcher Loyer can score but I think he’s a rich man’s Ryan Langborn. We saw how that went.

Lance Jones is a pitbull but barely 6’ tall and shoots almost 60% of his shots from 3, so he doesn’t seem like he’s able to break guys down off the dribble.

Coleman does about as good a job guarding Edey straight up as anyone and will make Edey guard in space on the other end.

And speaking of on the other end, I don’t see anyone on their roster who can guard Marcus, Ty or Quincy.

Will be our toughest game yet and we will miss TJ for sure but we have a chance.

Coleman will be the key to beating Purdue, I think. He will have to avoid silly fouls on Edey so that he’ll be in the game to draw him out of the lane on defense. Dain will play more minutes this game out of necessity, but Coleman’s presence for the bulk of the game will be crucial.
That's pretty much what the B1G refs call when Edey is involved.

Imagine if Kofi had gotten the calls that Edey does.

In my opinion the biggest part of this game is going to be rebounding, not any one guy hitting shots.

You can’t give Purdue multiple opportunities on offense. Offensive rebounds leads to guys out of position which leads to open threes and fouls.

What has been impressive in the last few games is the focus of the offense. Every trip down the court they go into a purposeful set. In the past there would be mindless weave or exterior passes. This year you see that everyone seems to know exactly what they need to do and where to go on the offensive sets. With so many good 3 point shooters and interior post ups, they seem to come with a specific game plan for each team and they execute.

Last year, Brandon Newman killed us in this game. Smith and Edey got their points, but Newman led all scorers with 19 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and only one turnover.

Brandon Newman no longer plays for Purdue. Edey, Smith, Loyer, and Lance Jones are the four leading scorers for Purdue. Loyer was awful when we played them on the road last year.

I don't think we're going to be able to do the booty ball thing in this game. Defensively, Purdue is better than Northwestern was tonight. Dain isn't going to be super effective going against Edey, but I do wonder if we see the twin tower look somewhat more often when Edey is in.

No booty ball?? Smith and Loyer are going to be hunted I think.

JMO keys to game
- Can Marcus score in paint with Edey swatting shots. Marcus was neutralized by Tennesee size.
- Can Coleman, Dain, Quincy contain Edey
- Will we get offensive rebounds against Purdue. Illini rank 7th in rebounding margin (12 rbg), Purdue 14th (10 rbg)
- can we avoid silly turnovers
- Can we shoot 60%

If we play drop coverage, Smith will shoot the mid-range pull up, which he seems very good at. Contrary to popular belief, I don't think Dain will play much. I don't think he is cerebral enough to thwart Purdue's called plays. They run more sets than anyone.

We probably won't be able to attack the basket with such success as usual, especially QG as effectively with Edey lurking near the basket. I think Harmon hitting corner 3's and Coleman hitting a couple 3's early (to pull Edey out) are the keys to this game. That opens up things for us to settle in.

Tenn is athletic, but not big/long per se as their front line goes 6-6, 6-6, 6-10. Marcus was mostly guarded by 5'9 Zeigler and 6'3 Vescovi. He had more issues with Zeigler's quick feet/hands, but really, he just had a poor shooting night. It happens.

Edey isn't really a great shot blocker taking into account he's 7-4, but yeah, his presence alone bothers a lot of shots in the paint (and even mid-range to a degree).

Main thing is we just need to play Edey straight up, no doubling/leaving guys open from 3 imo.

Harmon going 4-5 on 3's would help a lot!

Luke getting on track hitting 3's is potential upside

NW owned Purdue last year and this year. FDU beat Purdue last year despite no size.

Even without TSJ I really like our ability to switch on defense due to good size and quickness

Ty 6'6
Quincy 6'9 but agile
Marcus 6'6'
Luke 6'7"
Coleman 6'10' but agile
---
Harmon 6'4"

Last year our guards were smaller - Jayden Skyy got abused in paint by Iowa Penn State etc.
Don't get me started on Mathew's defense
