Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

Bud DGL has played sparingly all season long and there’s a reason for that. Putting him in today would’ve been a train wreck. As far as Moretti, the kid has never played in a big ten game before. They’ve got to ease him in. Today wasn’t a day to do that
This wasn't a train wreck???????

This is a pattern. Brad isn't subbing and there doesn't seem to be anything to get him to change that.

He should have had a plan to "ease him in" at home against Maryland. If we lose this particular game because of TWO minutes with either of those two on the floor, then that's pretty pathetic. There are lots of reasons to sub. I listed some big ones.

Why can we not play well against Maryland? Why? WHY?

For one thing, Maryland is always supremely confident against the Illini. They have a proud roundball legacy of their own and were not intimidated when they came in to the Big Ten. Illini have not yet given them a reason to be feared by Maryland.

Plus, the Illini are once-again highly ranked and good opponents will raise their game and get further motivated. Illini didn't match that energy.

And also, the Illini don’t seem to like to play teams from the Eastern Time Zone. Even when they play them in the Central Time Zone.

There’s no ‘logical’ reason why they should be so dominant against the Illini since the players have changed over the years. Illini have just not asserted themselves and Maryland knows this.

This was still a winnable game until the end but once again the Illini did not get the job done. This is a game where no Illini stepped up as they do not have their new Alpha to take charge during crunch time. And probably won’t have one for the remainder of this season. It will have to be Alpha By Committee.

If you’re going to have games when your focus and energy are not there... this is the time of year. But as the weeks get closer to March... that’s when you can NOT have games like this.

Parade of terribles today.

Couldn’t make a layup. Probably had at least 6
Spin out.

Lots of long rebounds/funky bounces that always seemed to find MD.

Two guys who have shot a combined like 13 % from 3 each make one.

A couple of tough foul calls on Coleman towards the end of the game.

And we bring our D effort on defense.

They just have our number. Think we will bounce back. I’m sure guys were exhausted after a hard fought game Thursday and I’m sure an emotionally exhausting hearing on Friday.

First bad loss of the year and think they will figure it out and it will wind up being quad 2.
It was almost comical the way shots refused to fall. They just need to put this one behind them and get ready for the next game.

A very frustrating loss, but we move on. Nothing worse than watching the game at a birthday party, but have to keep a brave and happy face on for everyone else who doesn’t understand. It took every ounce of me not to flip the beautiful dessert table.

MANY many stupid post game comments . . . 🤬
We shot 9-40 in the second half, our rim was the diameter of Fran McCaffery's sphincter when we're beating Iowa by 20, MD owned us in the paint, and yet it was a one-possession game with 1:09 remaining. Turnovers roughly even, rebounds even, better from three, got to the line a great deal more than they did until the final minute. @Retro62 kept commenting that he couldn't believe we were losing to this inferior team at home. They trailed Michigan by a dozen at home in the first half on Thursday. Michigan! At home!

Just a bad half of basketball for us and still we could have pulled it out. That's my postgame cold take. And I flew off the handle when I saw Reese turn around to pursue T.A. in the line b/c I assumed, being the predictable DB that he is, he was the instigator. Apparently not, much to TA's discredit.

Put it behind us, go to Michigan and take care of business, come home and beat Rutgers. It's a long season.

Disappointing loss for sure. Looked disconjointed at times with a lack of focus and effort but we also need to remember we have a lot of sickness going thru this team right now. Nearly half them missed three straight days of practice before the last game and most likely the rest will get it if they don't have it already. You just don't get over that stuff overnight. When we played Michigan State we dug deep and came up with the win in a dog fight. Today we looked good for about the first 5-8 minutes before we hit a wall. I got a feeling our overall health and lingering affects from our sickness that we have been dealing with right now had more to do with today's loss than we know. You can only will push your body so much. With just 2 days rest we were probably on low reserve when the game started. Seems like we have this happen sometime every year. Just one of those things that we seem to always have to deal with. We will be fine imo.

I’ll say it again. The loss of TSJ hurts. It’s not an excuse, it’s reality. Can’t really depend on a 7 man rotation night in and night out in the B1G. Will have nights like this when one is in foul trouble and a lot of the rotation has trouble shooting.

him being suspended has cost us at least 2 games , maybe 1 or 2 more in the next 2 weeks

In his post game, Underwood says he 'doesn't believe in fatigue. And never has. Best conditioned team in general country. Million dollar recovery room. They're 21-22 years old. Play everyday of their life.'

That's unfortunate. Let's drop to a 5-man no rotation then. /s (Though we are one unfortunate injury or incident of this happening). Guys can give their best effort but when gassed, it may not be enough. The team has been through an emotional and mentally draining couple weeks (let alone physical). I hope he believes in that.

Not picking on you specifically. But let me ask, what is an acceptable reaction to this loss? Is the season over, no. Is it unacceptable to dissect what happened during a loss to a bottom half B10 team who has, up until today, struggled mightily on the road? Is it unacceptable to question if some things had been done differently that it could have maybe prevented a bad loss? Don't you think the coaches and players are probably doing that same thing? That's also what fans do. The shock and surprise at fans being fans is what, to me, is truly awesome.
I was fomulating this same reply in my head. He implies that we should be saying "yeah, tough loss to a good team on the road, get 'em next time."

It's "only" a Quad 3 loss because it's at home, but man.. this is team's closest game outside of Quad 1 was an 11-point Q3 win against Oakland. We were consistent. VERY consistent:

Quad 1 : loss or single-digit win
Quad 2-4 : double-digit win

This is an outlier so bad that it forces you to wonder.

We looked good initially. Goode was playing lights out.
But we shot awful on open 3s, started to make some atrocious interior turnovers on passes that never had a chance (a pattern that continued for most of the night, never figured out how to stop Old Man Young on floaters in the paint, and like others observed, two incredibly phantom calls on our glue guy to foul him out...
What a dumpster fire game, I'm in line with what EO said about a tired team coming off of a really intense week emotionally and physically.
We're going to be fine.
Agree with your assessment but disagree with “we’re gonna be fine”. I guess “fine” is relative but I think we’re going to probe for what our bottom is without TSJ. We’ve peaked and I predict be bottom out around top 25.

Big Ten play will exploit our depth and frankly our athleticism. We don’t have any big time athletes on the team. TSJ will be missed.

Two dudes punked us all day on our home court. Reese and Jones, both lefties, took our pizza from us in the Pizza Hut parking lot, ate it in front of us and threw the crust at us for leftovers. We bought another pizza and they took that one too, did the same thing and peeled out of the parking lot laughing and honking their horn. How can we get dunked like this at home?

Props to you. You're on the Loyalty postgame thread. In the wake of a loss like this one, impulse control and stoicism are scarce resources.

I nominate this for Loyalty Hall of Fame quote list...thx Altgeld, I needed that laugh!
