Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

Let's not forget Nebraska mollywhallopped Purdue fairly recently.
This can happen. I believe in the maturity and capability of this roster that it will not become a trend.

I don’t understand the “too many minutes” argument. Our starting 5 averaged 1 more minute per guy than their starting 5. Their starting 5 played 161 minutes on Thursday; our starting 5 played 164. We had 2 home games; they had to travel. Check the box scores of any good team in a close game. A very high percent of those teams play similar minutes.

Brad is stubborn as a mule. He's making strides....but this was a huge swing and miss today. This game literally begged anyone with a lick of BB sense to throw those guys in for a spark....and a rest for the others.
That is true. On the upside, it is part of what has made him the successful coach he has been to this point. Also, “knowing is at least half the battle;” and I’m pretty sure he’s at least introspective enough to know …that stubbornness can be both a strength & a weakness.

You could say the same about Izzo to a higher degree. Pundits, and even this board like to count him out again and again…partially because he doesn’t run 180 degrees in the opposite direction with some absolutist idea of analytics. Basketball analytics are still in their infancy.
They’re really really smart statistics. They are not an end all be all. They are a tool; and should be used as such.

Ex. Of what I’m talking about with Izzo: Sending 3-4 guys to the offensive boards…embracing mid-range jumpers to a certain extent…post-ups…

Sorry about the tangent…but it is actually germane to Brad. Bootyball is closer to Chuck Daly’s Pistons than it is Steve Kerr’s Warriors. You have to do what your personnel dictates. That remains true.

Look at the success we have had with this move toward Shrews/Booty-ball and embracing the midrange shot a little more it has opened everything else up more. Also we’re at our best when we’re hitting the boards hard on D and O… that is not even debatable.

So I give credit to Brad for that.

But as to the playing time and rotations. I have to admit there’s a lot of times I just don’t get it. I don’t get this board’s frequent take(s) on PT either.

I haven’t forgotten several people being hollered at for merely hoping: Goode, RJ, & Podz got 30 sec. of PT once or twice. Ridiculous. They ARE on our roster right? What’s so bad wanting to see them get some valuable PT. Valuable to EVERYBODY in the long run btw.

PS: I love Domask. He’s my favorite Illini since Feliz. But for a coaches kid & and an otherwise fundamentally sound player…it has surprised me his tendency to sometimes, flippantly flip passes to the wing with one hand AND then also trying to corral rebounds with one hand. The problem with the one handed rebounds is obvious. No tip, tip, tippy…grab the SOB with two hands and be done with it. The one handed pass is problematic IMO because you can’t pull it back/stop the pass if need be. Even on a full court baseball pass it’s nice to have that other hand at the ready to stop it at the last moment. I’ll bet he ran some down & backs in his dad’s gym for doing those lazy one handlers.

Call it old school if you want. Call it a sacred cow. But that little league coach that told you it was a good idea to cover your glove with the other hand when catching pop ups wasn’t wrong.

Facts, Schmacts dude!

J/K great post. No reason to make excuses, this was clearly a bad loss. Hopefully, the only one we have the remainder of the season.

I could not disagree more. The decision to not give Moretti or DGL an opportunity while the guys ahead of them were mailing it in was Brad's decision. Bench guys deserved a chance to at least show what they can do out there today. The decision not to adjust our defense when the same guys were burning us over and over again was also Brad's.
Brad has to wear this one.

You play on Thursday night and basically play 6 guys. You give it all. You have been doing that the last several games. It has been a 6 man rotation. You can not do that in the big ten. We looked like 6 tired guys today. Legs, bodies, everything was moving in sand. We must increase the rotation.
Mins played in the last 4 games:
Quincy 35, 38, 33, 34
Coleman 35, 35, 37, 29
Marcus 35, 40, 38, 37
Luke 32, 35, 36, 36
I know they are young men, in great shape, with great a great facility but even they can get tired and that's a lot of minutes. The short bench caught up with us today. Legs were not fresh which leads to poor shooting and defense. Exhaustion leads to bad decisions.
Ty played 33 today and Justin played 31 against MSU. Easily the most either one has played in one game all year.
Wisconsin and Purdue utilize their benches a great deal. Over their last 4 games the two of them combined only had 4 players total play 35 mins or more.
We had 12.
Hopefully, the bench will get some minutes over the next stretch of games to not only get them more experience but get the others some time off.

Wear what? If his team makes layups, they're running the clock out with smiles on their faces. This is a heavy senior laden team. These are 21 and 22 year old men. The fact that he had to get upset, at all, to light a fire is ridiculous.

In regards to DGL, he has shown absolutely nothing to make any rational person believe that he was going to come in and change momentum. He's a true freshman and has played like it. Do you think that a "let's see what happens" approach would have been a good one? He would have been FAR more likely to turn it over, put up a bad shot, lose his man on defense or take an awful foul than "light a fire".

Moretti has been cleared for what...one day? It would have been smart to throw him in with no life game action in over a month? He was going to stem the tide? C'mon.....

Guerrier needs to make layups.

ANY of the guys, not named Coleman Hawkins, needs the get mote physical and not get consistently beat on back cuts. What was it, 52-24 points in the paint?? Seriously?

These are grown men and if they have any pride, they're going to take this experience and absolutely beat the brakes off of Michigan.

They need to look in the mirror, they need to own this effort and they need to correct it and move forward.

Hard stop.

There's very little reason to think Moretti is ready for Big 10 basketball. Ya'll are gonna set unreasonable expectations, then crap on the kid when he doesn't live up to them.
Exactly. If BU throws those two kids to the wolves and they perform poorly, he'd be roasted and rightfully so. Neither of those guys have shown the ability to play big in a big time game. I think they'll be fine players in a couple of years. As we sit here today.....you go with your seniors and vets. Those guys need to perform.

A couple things, first we gave Maryland so many second chance opportunities. The ball was either bouncing to MD or we weren’t being aggressive enough for rebounds. It seemed like they just wanted the ball more. Second, we missed way too many open shots and layups. Can’t do that and expect to win. Lastly, this team is missing TSJ. Having him on the court spaces everything out and creates more fast break opportunities and just adds another weapon the other team has to stop. However, I think this team will be fine. It was just a bad game. A lot of games left in the season.

The players in front of both were absent on defense and continued to be absent on defense again and again. Good coaching means holding them accountable, which means sitting them down and giving the players behind the starters a chance. No, Moretti and DGL haven't set the world on fire so far, but they haven't proven themselves unworthy of an opportunity in a situation like today when the players in front of them showed up half asleep. Instead of actually holding his starters accountable, Brad yelled and screamed, but did nothing to demonstrate that if his starters mail it in like they did today that they will pay for it in terms of minutes. It sends the wrong message to both the starters (I can show up ready or not and I'll still be able to get mine,) and the reserves (it doesn't matter how much effort I put in or if the guys ahead of me mail it in. Forget about me getting a fair opportunity.).

I really think the "make layups" peeps are really thinking shallowly about things and lacking context. Yeah, we missed a bunch of two point shots today. Many of which were highly contested and/or very difficult. It's not like they were blowing wide open two foot shots.

Part of the problem is the offense was completely discombobulated all day and we were just driving in and chucking up awful shots to beat the shot clock. Problems went a lot deeper than "missed layups".

Does anyone have the minute breakdown for Dainja, 1st half vs 2nd half? Seems like he scored 7 points in few minutes in the first then played less the 2nd half. I get it, his defense sucks, didn’t everyone’s suck today? There were a lot of missed shots which he seems to excel at snagging. If we could have gotten a few of his post type buckets, maybe an offensive put back or two, and a few more rebounds on D (Terps 11 offensive rebounds) we win.

We will win 20+ games, but we need more depth to go further. Taking a bench seat is not to just get a breath, sometimes it helps the coaches point things out to said player and get their head straight, particularly when they are not playing well. I also think we have to find a way to get Dainja involved, he has the size and strength others don’t have, and size matters. jmo

Yeah, the offense was not as good today. To me, they looked mentally tired and I think there is a couple of reasons for that. This game is a great wakeup call going forward, it cannot happen again. To be honest though, they did miss some wide open shots in the second half and a lot of the bounces went Maryland's way, which is what you need to win on the road against good teams

Too many times one player came down and didn’t even think about including the rest of the team. Forced shots up and gave up five turnovers. And on defense, no doubling up on the opposition in the paint.Uggh. Two ugly games in a row.
