Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

I'd like to see Ty be more selective on his drives like doing so when there's a big in the paint he can either get a screen from or deliver a pocket pass to.
Granted, if Dain isn't getting minutes it may take until next year with Rez for this to happen.
Ty was doing a phenomenal job in the first 8 minutes, but after that, our offball players stopped cutting to the basket. We rely on Guerrier a lot for that and he was off today

Lots of poor execution and sloppy mistakes. It looks like the team is mentally fatigued from all the BS surrounding TSJ. It must be very difficult living in that space 24/7.
I wonder how much sitting through a teammate’s contentious court session where one’s university representatives were not only not supporting, but were agressively arguing and fighting tooth and nail to keep your teammate and brother from playing with you affected each of these guys. Just listening to that lack of support has to make someone question whether he wants to play/fight that hard for this school. I know the buzz word FamILLy is Bielema’s, but it seems to be the opposite of what is going on here. One’s family is supposed to fight FOR its members, not AGAINST them. This has to take a toll and be both mentally and physically fatiguing for everyone, and it could definitely be partly responsible for these guys’ poor play and Coach Anderson’s especially emotional behavior yesterday…

They provide downtime for our heavily used rotation. Nico can initiate a different offense than Ty and can actually feed the post to someone like Domask or Dain instead of initiating at the 3pt line.

You are most certainly giving up defense, but going to a traditional line up with Nico and and Dain can bear fruit offensively and provide a new look. DGL is at very least going to try hard and gives us a quick guard on offense that can shoot and space the floor.

In short, it gives us options. We need to add something new in, because Booty Ball isn't working as effectively as it was.
Booty Ball is starting to look like hero ball where Damask backs his way into a lane full of defenders and the other 4 Illini get out of the way and watch.

Surprised about lack of CH discussion.Thought he was out of sorts, reverting back to complaining on calls, throwing arms in air, pouting on bench, shows zero leadership.Guess this will not change.
Like you said, he was out of sorts and didn’t have a good game. I often don’t particularly like his on court demeanor, but I think as fans we are way to quick to pull out the “zero leadership” card. We don’t know what he’s saying in the locker room, huddles and to individual players on the court. Most fans like it when he gets a dunk and flexes. Does that mean he’s being a good leader then? He’s an emotional player. That’s likely not going to change. That doesn’t mean when he or the team has a bad game that he is showing zero leadership.

Avoided this entire thread and slept on the loss. Still sucks but in the grand scheme of things I think we’ll be fine. This probably does erase us for the time being of having a hope to be in a top 2 seed line, but there’s plenty of basketball left to play for a 3/4/5 seed in March and I think almost everyone here would’ve taken that in October. Marylands game plan was really good, and they do have some size and length that matches up well with us that made it difficult to score down low.

This was a foul on Coleman with his body, although his hands were straight up, we might not like it but I think it was the right call

They really sagged off the ball, and sent quick doubles on Domask from the top when he got into his mid-post up. We need to find ways to counter this.

The 5 second call was the right call as well. It was roughly 5.7 seconds actually…

This was NOT a foul on Reese though….

Booty ball is great when it works. In games when Domask isn’t getting much help on the offensive end, it tends to bog down the offense whether it is Marcus or Ty doing it. Teams now are formulating a plan to defend it, and it is up to BU and staff to install wrinkles to combat those plans. With Moretti back, maybe one of those wrinkles is to get him in for a minute or two to try and get the offense flowing better. And no I’m not advocating for him to get any kind of major minutes. Just another option for BU to use in games like this.

Curious to know if anyone ever heard what the hand shake line dust up between TA and Reece was all about.

Reese was walking up and down in front of the Illinois bench mouthing off at the end of the game. I didn't realize Julian is the younger brother of LSU player Angel Reese. Seems like the trash talk and generally being an ahole kind of runs in the family.

I’ll say it again. The loss of TSJ hurts. It’s not an excuse, it’s reality. Can’t really depend on a 7 man rotation night in and night out in the B1G. Will have nights like this when one is in foul trouble and a lot of the rotation has trouble shooting.

With Shannon there was a rather significant margin of error

With Shannon we could tolerate a below average shooting night, a bad night from the free throw line, a night where we make 10 to 15 turnovers, an opposing team who goes ballistic and makes 15 threes, --and we could still pull out the victory.

Without Shannon our margin or error has been significantly decreased.

Going forward we are going to have to play very smart basketball at both ends of the court.

You must have short term memory loss. Definitely had it last season…and the season before that…and most of the Groce years…and the year Weber got fired.

This is nothing compared to any if those.
I'm torn between quoting Taylor Swift: "In my defense, I have none." and responding with this clip:

In all seriousness, we weren't *there* yet last year, and that is...of course...subjective. For the record, the OSU loss in 2005 was the last meltdown in my mind. I would count Penn St the year following, but I met Mike Walker's dad at the BTT shortly after, and he was an extremely cool dude.

Yeah, he's a low-rent tool and has been his entire MD career. He owned us yesterday, however.

T.A.'s gotta realize that (1) he reps the program; and (2) revenge is a dish best served cold. The only response to Reese's flapping is to go to College Park next month, shut him down and shut him up. Then look him straight in he eye and smile knowingly in the handshake line afterward.

Just speculating on this one here, and maybe this is entirely off base, but it sure seemed as though we were in a fog yesterday. Not crisp on anything and our typical hard nosed defense was relatively porous. Was thinking maybe a portion could be a direct result of the circus that this whole TSJ stuff is. I love that our guys back each other (as evidenced by the guys showing up to the courthouse) but I almost feel like they just need to separate. Maybe I’m wrong.

In other news, I love to see a fiery Tim Anderson, but what was the story there?

There are so many times that college refs assume something is going to occur that they make a call even if the violation did not even happen.

Look....I know the Krush isn't missing layups, not grabbing rebounds or playing swiss cheese defense on the court. But I was going to come here to post the exact same thing.

It is infuriating to me, both watching games at home and (today) in person, how quiet the Krush are most of the time. We were up 20-11 and I looked at the Krush and basically 90% of them were standing still with their arms crossed not making an ounce of noise. At that point, early in the game with a nice lead, the SFC should've been going bonkers with the Krush leading the way. Step on Maryland's throats and don't even give them a chance to get back into the game. Look at how the Paint Crew does it at Mackey....they put their foot on the gas and scream and give themselves a TRUE home court advantage the whole game.

I'd have to go look at old games on YouTube from when I was in Krush in 03-05, but I remember basically having no voice at the end of games.:cautious: Instead, the SFC crowd now gets loudest during McNuggets free throws. There were no inspired, fun, distractions from the Krush during free throws like there used to be. Some weird curtain thing that wasn't even behind the hoop that I'm sure the players can barely see.

You could give the Krush all 15,500 seats and it wouldn't matter if they just stand there with their arms crossed in silence.
Yep, there’s no sense of the moment from Krush or most of the fans. I said out loud “come on people make some noise” when I thought we had Maryland on the ropes on the first half, but Krush and everyone else was quiet. When I was in Krush, every defensive possession we were up bouncing around and making noise, it was a workout and you were tired at the end. Now the most energy the Krush gives is when they’re introduced before tip and then during one of the second half timeouts when they get their banner out.

I think 95% of the fans would happily sit down the whole game if they could.

I actually thought Coleman wa she only one putting up a fight. He was frustrated for sure, but that was as much at his team as it was anything else. You could tell the game mattered to him, regardless of the outcome. Those fouls were pretty bad thou by the standards set by the refs. Maryland was getting away with much more physical play and were amply rewarded for it. Frustrating indeed.
Not sure how you formulate this opinion based on listening to game on radio.Game also mattered to Domask,Goode, etc, radio broadcast mention CH terrible body language, pouting on end of bench, emotion gets the best of CH more times than not.Really a big CH fan, just not pleased with leadership, need more.
