Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

We looked good initially. Goode was playing lights out.
But we shot awful on open 3s, started to make some atrocious interior turnovers on passes that never had a chance (a pattern that continued for most of the night, never figured out how to stop Old Man Young on floaters in the paint, and like others observed, two incredibly phantom calls on our glue guy to foul him out...
What a dumpster fire game, I'm in line with what EO said about a tired team coming off of a really intense week emotionally and physically.
We're going to be fine.

Not sure how bad the Terps are or just underachieving so far. Near the end of the telecast, the announcers mentioned that in the preseason media polling, Maryland was picked to finish 3rd (and that was higher than the Illini). So how bad are they really. Maybe we took them too lightly too.
I did expect them to be in the mix preseason so I get that but their shooting is still abysmal. They killed us inside and we gifted them many of those with how bad the defense was. They were smart to keep letting us kill ourselves and it paid off. Nothing in this game screamed Maryland is a good team imo with the amount of layups we gave them. Not to mention the layups we got but failed to convert. This defensive effort was on par with something Michigan would show.

Parade of terribles today.

Couldn’t make a layup. Probably had at least 6
Spin out.

Lots of long rebounds/funky bounces that always seemed to find MD.

Two guys who have shot a combined like 13 % from 3 each make one.

A couple of tough foul calls on Coleman towards the end of the game.

And we bring our D effort on defense.

They just have our number. Think we will bounce back. I’m sure guys were exhausted after a hard fought game Thursday and I’m sure an emotionally exhausting hearing on Friday.

First bad loss of the year and think they will figure it out and it will wind up being quad 2.

Got punked. And like others mentioned, never did anything to stop the pick and roll. They abused us on it over and over.

And I'm not sure what prompted the hand shake line fiasco, but our coaches need to coach better and handle losses better.
Posters need to remember that Reese was the twerp player that tried to teabag Dain a couple years ago.....flagrant attempt to get his legs around Dain's head.......I know I would have some bad feelings if another team's player tried to do that to me and I wouldn't forget it either..........I really really really wouldn't .................................

I agree. His fast break points are also massively missed
They can still run without him and they’ve really slowed down the past few games, which I think has hurt us. (If you’re not gonna rebound anyway you might as well get out on the break.)

A few takeaways:
The hypobaric chambers are going to be in high demand for recovery. Guys were just gassed. I despise a 6-man rotation.

Jahmir Young and Julian Reese 2-man ball was too much for us. Tiny quick guards are our kryptonite if we don't bullyball them on the other end. Young just has our number.

Harmon and QG were just OFF their game.

Luke had a few wild, overly physical plays. Grabbed a guy (first foul) and pushed a guy on a breakaway. Tired legs = silly plays. Both almost looked dirty.

Dain gave a spark, but he's not the answer.

Sad to let this one get away, especially at home, but when you lose your best offensive and one of your best defensive players, these games will happen. ON TO THE NEXT!
Yup, other than the early flurry by Goode, we didn't flat out make shots from 3 that we typically have. It allowed them to bring lots of help against Marcus when he would get isolated in the paint with impunity.

In a game where Guerrier struggled the whole way through, Hawkins was in foul trouble, and both of them looked exhausted at points, Dain still gets what, 9 minutes? Hansberry with 0. DGL with 0. I guess at this point it's clear what Brad thinks of the bench.
Wasn't DGL ill and Hansberry was out with a bad back?
