Northwestern 96, Illinois 91 OT Postgame

#276
I was at the game:
-Northwestern student section was not as bad as other student sections will be(MSU, Maryland). Mainly heard "no means no" chants when TSJ shot free throws and "guilty" chant towards the end of the game. Boos were loud in the 1st half but boos were less and less in the 2nd half---it was by no means a hostile environment. Credit NW students for not being too out of line

-Tale of 2 halves: First half was all defense and Second half/OT was all offense.
-Northwestern controlled the game. Although it was back and forth and Illinois stayed in it throughout, I always felt like Northwestern had the upper hand and control in both halves. Whether it was Buie, Barnhizer, Ty Berry, or Nicholson's timely dunks, they always seemed to keep ILL at bay. I think NW deserved to win this game and they won the game.

Really good game though. Great atmosphere from NW student section. Great atmosphere from all of the Illini fans that came out. From a NW alumni standpoint, you can't allow the opposing team's fans to dominate the stands but I'm happy to go to the game and support the Illini. I'd say it was at least 60% Illinois fans there but probably slightly higher than that. Just a really good college basketball game on the whole outside of the loss

BU seemed noticeably ticked off at that presser. NU can be loud. It's so small, it takes only a small group of crazy fans to make that place super loud. When TSJ went to the line the first or second time, he made an expression that I perceived as unease or frustration with the chants. At another point Goode was in his ear. In hindsight, I wonder if not starting Shannon tonight would have worked out better. When he was subbed in last game, he seemed more comfortable albeit at home. But that's why I wonder if we should've started him on Saturday vs IU for his first start coming back to ease him in.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I would have preferred a drive, or some ball movement as well. Not a bad look for Domask, but…it is what it is.
Seriously, do we have sets on offense? Inbounds plays? I saw next to no ball movement tonight. Just one on one with kick-outs when doubled (which happened a lot) and the rest was points off rebounds with some badly needed shooting. Realize Shannon was not himself, but even our cutters were minimized. And as someone mentioned, stop allowing their best player to be guarded by an average defender. Best on best! Maddening. And the missed bunnies tells us that either they’re still sick or just getting outplayed. We are better than them. Smh

He's the best player, not named Edey, in the Big Ten and he hung almost 30 on us, which included a big shot late in regulation. Boo, objectively, beat the crap out of us.
Not named Edey or Shannon. Honestly could make an argument for Tyson Walker too but he's very good and he beat us.

I don't understand why they kept switching on the high pick and roll. Both Rodgers and Shannon are good enough to fight through screens and athletic and big enough to make life hell for Buie but they just allowed him to pick his own matchups over and over again.

I don't think he was totally comfortable last game. He missed 3's that he usually makes and had 5 pts until halfway through the 2nd half. Then, he took over. He's reintegrating and part of the reintegration is getting him back in the starting lineup so they regain that chemistry that they had before the suspension. Whether it was tonight or the Indiana game, he was going to be back in the starting lineup soon. Terrence didn't get into any kind of rhythm tonight. Credit Northwestern for that. We didn't necessarily need his offense today. The key reason we lost was the defensive breakdowns in the 2nd half

The students weren't that bad like I thought they might be. This was tame in comparison to what's coming at MSU and especially at Maryland. Maryland students will likely eat him alive

I think Shannon was definitely more frustrated with the refs than any chants and those chants really weren’t significant. I really don’t think it phased him much honestly and I was watching him pretty close. A number of guys had to get refocused by the staff as they were risking a tech from the refs with their complaints. Specifically Coleman and Harmon. Brad was VERY pissed at Harmon after a blown assignment.

Tbh, I actually think Iowa is going to be worse than MSU. ;)

Yes, I saw Underwood completely irate with Harmon and Harmon trying to talk things through with BU. The refs weren't that great tonight. We can all agree with that

I didn't include Iowa because they haven't been having a very good season. Maybe their students will have given up by the time Illinois comes to town since that is the last game of the regular season

I'm not troubled by losing at northwestern. They a tourney team.

What's troubling to me is the defense. Having this type of performance this recently after the debacle vs Maryland has me officially questioning the defensive ability of this team.

We were supposed to be a team that had great on ball defenders and Cohawk to clean everything up. It seems teams are just attacking us 1on1. If not that they cut and screen is to death and we've shown little to none resistance. We almost in February now, no reason to look this lost defensively.

You would think MSU’s student section would be tougher to deal with because they surround the court but Iowa is a little obnoxious and they give us a hard time. I agree though Maryland is on another level. That’s going to be the toughest one. TSJ is just going have to try blocking it out.

That’s a valid concern. I think Purdue opened this Pandora’s box when they stuck Edey on Ty. It was a snowball from there. Other teams are picking us apart defensively, looking for every advantage. But that’s big ten play. We need to adjust and dig deep here, now. Season isn’t lost but the adjustments in the Indiana game will tell all. And for goodness sakes, keep Ty in the game.

True. If we had Ty in at the end of regulation we probably would’ve won that game.

Can keep a defense honest with his ability to knock down jumpers. Hes been great the past month. Don’t know why that’s a ludicrous thought

Did someone say it's ludicrous? It's just wrong that we "needed" his offense when he wasn't shooting much and missing when he did. Yeah, he has been great lately. He looked off in the first half. And in the second half. And in overtime.

So, why not give minutes back to Ty? Especially when he looked effective.

I'm fine with putting Harmon in the game to spark some offense. That can be his thing. But he wasn't even getting shots. To put it another generous way, the staff consistently chooses really weird times to be patient with things.

The Illini might as well have let BooB just point to the guy he wanted to guard him each time. When you let one of the best players in the nation pick his defender, he usually will burn you. If they get away with it 3-4 times a game, just stick with the game plan. When it happens time after time after time, it might be time to reconsider. Great game with a bad result.

A whole lot of ugly chants today, none of which are the kind a team can rally around. This isn’t an “us against the world” situation. This is a distraction, no doubt.

Beware what you wish for!
I wholeheartedly root for Shannon and the rest of the guys to battle through this. Neutral environment NCAA games will seem like a walk in the park.

Let the sh!t go. 45 minutes of trash talking, and a frustrating loss, or an emotional win, brings the worst out in all of us.

Men, will be, men. Leave it alone. Move on, nothing to see here. Go Illini.

When BU said he had chicken wings thrown at him previously at Maryland, I was taken aback by that. What kind of classless fans do that? That's like Philly level of classless.

In the fresh light of morning, that was a hell of a basketball game. If Domask’s shot falls, we’re talking about how gritty we are to take a good team’s best punch on an off night and still win.

We still need to make sure that what happened at home vs MD never happens again this year, but last night is just basketball.

3-seed-plus or bust… let’s go. I L L
