In the NCAAs there will be cases where a mid-major gets hot from 3, and it does not matter much how good the opposing team may play defense. Happens every year. This game proves that this is not necessarily going to be a loss if it is against us, whereas most teams would be buried pretty easily by hot shooting.
It is undisputable that MN had an exceptionally hot shooting night against us. Our 3 point defense was not so weak as to basically make their attempts HORSE shots. I am sure if you look at the tape, they don't make 70% of their 3s in the warmups. This was one of those nights for MN which would have usually meant a home loss for IL in years past. There is a significant variation from game to game - if we played MN 10 times and gave them the same shots, they would probably score between about 67 and 97 in those 10 games with the average being much closer to about 75. We survived their best, and we should be happy about that.
I don't necessarily dispute what LaTulip says about teams being comfortable against us, but I don't think it is entirely that they are comfortable against us. In part, I think that we have been one of the few dominant B1G teams for the last 5 years, and we also talked some trash to these other guys over the last few years (if you remember Hunter saying no one else in the league likes us), so we get other teams' best efforts on a regular basis. Look at the Maryland away game - they have a full arena for us, but they hardly draw anyone for most of their other games. We have a target on our back. Also, MN really needed to beat us to keep their tourney hopes alive.
That said, I do agree with Werner. It is a point I have made before, they need to mix things up on defense, especially the pick and roll coverage like they did at Maryland. We are too predictable and play things too consistent, so we can be easily game planned for and the opposing players know exactly what is going to happen when they go into a pick and roll situation. I hope as we go into the post season that we keep some alternative defensive schemes in the pocket to pull out.
