Cardinals have already said Edman is staying as CF starter ,our best current option.Think Donovan will be excellent at 2nd.Trading an injured Edman would only return average starter of which we have plenty.Edman is a gold glove caliber CF imo.Not an unpopular move,the correct move.

Edman graded out as one of the top defensive center fielders in national league in his first season .He will only improve with experience.Don't think trading a potential young slugger like Gorman a very wise move.
Edman has been working with Willie McGee since moving to the outfield. McGee raves about Edman in the outfield.
I agree with the thoughts on Edman and centerfield. He has not played one full major league season in centerfield. To say he is a gold glove caliber centerffielder at this point is a stretch.
How many 9 inning games did he play in center?
I think a few of you are leaving out that Donovan is a great utility player as well. Edman won GG for 2B in 2021, he also split time in different positions. Donovan came up in his first season and won the first ever utility GG award in 2022. He played a decent amount at 2B that season as well 
Donovan is coming back from surgery and 2B is an ideal fit for him, not OF and 3B is taken.

You may absolutely be right. I am in the camp though that Edman is the gold glove ( not potential) second baseman. Edman would solidify an outstanding defensive infield. I will concede that since the front office did nothing to unclog the logjam in the infield during the offseason, the logical move is to move Edman to centerfield..

Centerfield is also a much more important defensive position. So if, and that's a big if, Edman is indeed Gold Glove caliber at both CF and 2B, then you put him in CF 10 times out of 10.
Point taken. But who among us think that Tommy Edman is the longterm solution in centerfield. From all reports Victor Scott is waiting in the wings

You have a few guys who are poor defensively, Edman gives you real good defense and the offense is extra. Cardinals have/will be bringing up guys like SS Winn and OF Scott who they think will stick around the organization for the next 10 years. It just works out Edman plays multiple positions which is a great thing. Edman is not a superstar but is too good to be sitting on the bench.
Big thing will be staying healthy. I feel confident in the infield defense of 3B Arenado, SS Winn(as much as you can in a rookie), 2B Donovan and 1B Goldy.
If Carlson showed more with his bat, he would be in CF. He hasn't done that yet
If Gorman showed more defense at 2B, he would be at 2B. He hasn't done that yet
Cardinals have to play to strengths and Marmol/Mo have already said they don't want to move Edman between OF and infield all the time. Noot, Walker, Edman with Carlson and Burleson for now. I like Scott a ton but don't see him starting the season in the majors unless an injury/trade.

this is just not true. we have ground ball pitchers and need to have infield strength up the middle. not to mention the fact that we have our future centerfielder (a real one) who can steal 60 bases in Memphis this year.

Team is putting best players on the field. Getting Donovan and his bat in the lineup are key while also being a Gold Glove Award Winner. 3B is taken, 1B is taken, SS is taken.....2B is where he needs to play.
Think most of us understand Edman is great at most positions. Donovan is pretty darn good as well. If Carlson was hitting .250 with power than we have a different narrative. Cardinals are trying to get the best players in the lineup. Sometimes guys have to move around when you have 3 guys who can play 3B.
im ok with that, i just believe Edman is a second baseman. and Victor Scott's our future CF. That puts Donovan/Gorman/Burleson at DH or part timers. Donovan (like Edman) is our most flexible from a position standpoint. that is again why i support a trade that gives one or two of those three a chance to play somewhere else and gives us another starting arm. Opinions are like ......
i guess to an extent we have to hold our horses until Walker, Winn and Scott pan out, but if these guys are the real thing, moves are there for the taking.

I am not big on Scott being on the Cardinals roster unless he is starting. I have no problem with him getting at bats daily at AAA until that time comes.
As fans, we want guys to perform. Also want them to perform even given a smaller role. Trade value of guys like Carlson, Burleson and Baker are low. Carlson has 3 arbitration years(including this one), other guys like 6 years of team control. I have no problem with the team making some moves but after the season has started and see if trade value goes up.
Gorman is my trade bait. his bad back might worry some, but his bat could produce 30+ HR per year. There's more than a few DH's who can do that.

Perhaps in a couple of years he would look awfully good at the end of Arenado's contract. Just seems like a plus to me.
The key thing you say here (and this is not a criticism) is that the Cardinals will be happy with a centerfielder, who hits .250 with power. My view is that this is a pretty low bar. But that is the state of Cardinal baseball these days. We have a second baseman, who is recovering from surgery, projected to be the centerfielder. According to another poster, he started all of 38 games in center last year. And finally, Lars Nootbar is the leftfielder. He has never played in more than 117 games in a year. His all time best RBI total for one season is 46. These 2 outfield spots lack punch in my uninformed opinion.

I didn't say just the CF position. Carlson's production has gone down since his 2nd year. His HR% is around half of the MLB average and low batting average and OBP. Cardinals would be ecstatic if we can get some steady production from Carlson offensively even if just coming off the bench.
Projected CF and 2B this season are both recovering from surgery. If you have Donovan playing the infield, Edman is moving. Not saying right or wrong, just the way it is. I have no problem with it, sounds like you aren't thrilled.
I'm not sure if Edman will be ready for the beginning of the season or not. If not, Carlson will fill in.
