the news.... we now have someone with a slash line that's worse than Matty C's.

how can an organization with the supposed "chops" of the birds not have
a shortstop in the system to backup Winn for a few weeks while Edman heals?
Draft pitching and shortstops (and a catcher or two) and you'll never be out
of positions, shortstops can almost always be moved. Right now todays
shortstops the best athletes in the game, hit, hit for power, arm strength,
fielding. and we have one, maybe... if he pans out.

now we have to drop a kid maybe off the 40 man and expose him to another
team to make room for Crawford. front Office needs a total rebuild.

They don't have anyone on their 40 man right now that's a better option as a backup to Winn other than Edman. Donovan and Fermin aren't really fits at short. Using Crawford as a backup at short means they won't have to use Edman at that position on days when Winn wants a day off.

100% agree

Edman wasn't expected back much before Opening Day if at all. I like the insurance policy with Crawford instead of plugging in someone and settling. I love the versatility of Edman. Likely will be cycling positions once Scott comes up for good.

and my point is its a problem to have an entire system without a shortstop who can fill in for a few weeks.
using crawford at SS means we don't have a system that has shortstops.... that's not good.

They have guys to fill in for a few weeks during spring training. Gamboa, Fermin, Rivas and Prieto all can fill in if needed. Teams play a ton of players early. Give some of the regulars a little time while getting looks at everyone.

Having Crawford around is not only an insurance policy but perfect mentor to help Winn in the field(won 4 Gold Gloves). Also gives the Cardinals depth in the OF as Edman can play multiple spots if/when Scott comes up.

BC slash line: .194/.273/.314. he's in the way, not a mentor.
if he's still on the squad when Edman comes back were in
trouble. 91-71 trouble. we can't afford MattyC #'s (176/. 322
/.
319) let alone two of them. a bad maneuver by a bad
front office.

He ain't in the way. He knows his role here. Listen to Goldy and Arenado talk about the lack of vet. guys in the clubhouse and how that hurt them last year. Also they aren't talking about from a purely production standpoint.

That's the beauty of sports, we don't have to agree

Crawford is not taking anything away from Winn. I don't mind having a 4-time Gold Glove Winner who has the 2nd most active games at SS helping a young SS who has not played 40 games in the majors yet. If it lasts a week, 50 games or all season it will only benefit Winn.

Yes, he is an aging player, but let’s atleast be fair to the guy. Last year was an injury riddled year for him. Largely the first one of his career. Is it ok to be frustrated with the organizational depth at short, sure, but I could think of way worse guys to show Winn what it takes to be a professional shortstop.
For me, I really don’t want to see a lot of Edman at short. I really don’t want to see him much in the OF. I like him at 2nd, he won a GG there and his offense production is that of a 2b.

Not saying I disagree but I don't see him sniffing 2B with the roster we have setup. It could change with injuries/trades

Donovan, Gorman and maybe even Carpenter/Fermin

Edman is such a good utility knife to have defensively

Which is insane to me. I agree, he nice to be able to plug and play when needed. For me though and I think for the success of the team, if the regular outfield isn't Walker, Noot, and DC we aren't going anywhere. The infield should be Nado, Winn, Edman, Goldschmidt. Willson catching and Gorman at DH.
We don't have pitchers who miss bats, we need our best defense out there.

Yeah agree ideal fit is 2B for Edman. I just don't see it with the guys we have. More the weaknesses of other guys and strengths of Edman to move him around.

Walker and Noot are.locks. Edman is getting time and DC needs to show something with his bat. Once Scott comes up for good at CF(whenever that is) than Edman moves again.

Sonny Gray named Cardinals Opening Day starter. Will be the 6th starter in the club's history to make his first start with the club on Opening Day. Most recent was Kyle Lohse back in 2008 who started after Waino's start the previous day was postponed after the Cardinals and Rockies only played through 2 1/2 innings.

I know Nootbar is the flavor of the day. He has never played in more than 117 major league games. And his all time RBI's are 46. It will take a while before Noot reminds anybody of Matt Holiday out there in left field.

carlson better step then, he's shown almost nothing offensively to be a regular. the outfield needs to produce at home plate.

edman is absolutely our best second baseman, stop trying to bounce him
around to various positions and see what he can do playing one position for
a year. gorman is a DH and part time third baseman, that is all. you mentioned
the need for defensive with this pitching staff, that means edman at second.

i know its unpopular, but with his bad back and his promise we might have
flipped him for a pretty good pitcher this off season. being unpopular is a
GM's job.
