St Louis Cardinals 2024

Think Cards surprise folks this season, I really, really do.

i guess it depends on what a surprise means...i hate to be the SE Ill guy, but im not impressed by the changes.
if you mean they can challenge to win the weak central division, than i agree. if you mean anything more than that
i do not. but i don't ever evaluate the cardinals against the cubs and brewers. i evaluate them against the best
teams in the national league.

I don't mind this take at all

I look at it as the Dodgers, Braves and Phillies as the top dogs in the NL with the rest in the distance. A hot team at the end of the year can upset anyone but those are some solid teams.

Sadly Mo & Co don't care about being as good as the elite teams. Just win around 88 - 92 games get into the playoffs and the cash cow will keep giving milk.

Still trying to figure out why you would, in the face of "budget restraints" related to the Bally situation {goodness let's not dare to spend any of the hundreds of millions made in previous yrs) you would would spend $20m on Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. 2 gopher ball specialists whose sell dates were long ago. If you had $20m in your pocket that's your strategy? What 5.50 ERA can those 2 offer for $20m that Thompson/Rom/Libertore can't do for a 10th of that? Then you'd have cash to spend on a couple of good RP's. Hope I'm wrong and those 2 rise to the occasion but judging from the last couple of years that doesn't seem likely. Oh well rant over.

JMO but I see two reasons

The short term reason is inning eaters. I have no problem with one year deals on these guys and if they do well have the club option for another season.

Long term reason on some of these shorter deals is because I think MO will transition out of office or to a different position within 2 years. His contract is up in few seasons just like a bunch of the contracts in the 25 and 26 seasons. It could change, but it would give the next guy in charge plenty of wiggle room to see who he wants to keep on the roster, trade, extend, etc.

You could be right but finishing 3rd in a crap division is a big price to pay for wiggle room.

Starting pitching is at a premium and we needed starters. Paying $10 million plus for a starter is now considered low risk. It is what it is. At worst we cut hook at the end of the season. Less about the $20 million and more about the number of years. Low risk move

People are going to complain whatever moves the Cardinals make. No moves, signing these guys, signing an ace, etc. Comes with the territory. I might be wrong with Mozeliak but I believe that is what is going on move wise.

So Taguchi might have a couple more AB's in him as well.
St Louis loves So Taguchi. Should have given him the Carp deal :ROFLMAO:

Many moons ago I helped make sure the Taguchi dog got shipped to the right destination in the offseason.

HIs son Kan is in college now and plays baseball. Know he had some injuries so didn't get to play much in the past year or two but goes to Grand Canyon.

i know i'm the complaining type. Moz has made me that way, but the reality is, if we signed Montgomery
(4x$25mil with opt outs?) and got to the top of the division with a healthy lineup, we would be one trade
deadline starter from competing in the post season with ATL and LAD.

Please explain something. Are you talking about signing Montgomery before we traded him or signing him now as a free agent? If you are talking signing him now, the Dewitts have said their paytoll is pretty well set for 2024.
