montgomery is going to get $150 mil. ish
relievers:
hader wants more then $102 mil.
Neris wants $50 mil
robertson (a serious step down from the above)
is 38 yrs old and signed for a 1 yr deal last year for $10 mil.
Cleveland might trade their closer but wants a lot.

i dont know who else is out there but neris at 35 yrs old is the only reasonable $.
the key to that article is "at the right price". We will get none of these guys.

Cub fan here. Checking what the opposition is doing. If the Cubs are playing chess they are doing it so close to the vest that nobody can see the board.

One of those sports groups made their predictions for MLB final standings as the teams are now configured. They have your Cardinals winning the division. I forget the group, probably because I didn't like what I heard, but wasn't surprised. The rest of the division is mostly sitting on their thumbs.

You know the guy at the bar who is waiting for a woman to get really drunk and the better looking guys to leave? I think that's the game the Cubs are playing.

When I first saw the headline I thought he might be a hitting coach or with Waino doing broadcasts.
ON THE ROSTER???

Matt Carpenter is returning to the St. Louis Cardinals, agreeing Friday to a one-year contract with the team he played for from 2011-21.

Carpenter agreed to a deal for the $740,000 major league minimum, which will be offset against his guaranteed $5.5 million salary as part of a $12 million, two-year contract he signed with San Diego in December 2022.

He hit .176 with five homers and 31 RBI but had just 50 at-bats from July 1 on. Carpenter didn't play after Sept. 10 because of right elbow inflammation.

Was listening to BenFred on the way home tonight and he said the Carpenter move is mainly just to add another veteran presence on the roster and provide leadership (which the team lacked quite a bit last season). He also said that Carpenter will be the "captain" of the bench and be sort of a mentor to the younger bench players in teaching them how to prepare themselves even if they only get an at-bat once every 4 or 5 days.

WTF. Carp was once a VG player. That was 5 or 6 yrs ago. This is more stupid from Mo. A bench influencer? Are they kidding? Wasting a roster spot on Carp is the height of mismanagement.

If that's the case, then hire him as a coach and don't waste a roster spot.

lets hope this is a one day then retire deal, or our crowded outfield is getting thinned out for a pitcher.
roster is full now. this makes absolutely no sense. Nallie will get replaced by a pitcher. i was already fed
up with his ground outs to second base.....

Call me a Debbie Downer, but I do not think that the Cardinals are a playoff team as of today. Offensively the Redbirds were 19th in run production last year. In my view Matt Carpenter is not going to move the needle much. There are too many utilty players masquerading as fulltime players. As for the pitching the Cardinals were somewhere around 24th. I will concede that they are better. But how much is to be seen.better
