St Louis Cardinals 2024

O'Neill shipped to Boston for a couple of project pitchers. Guy could just not stay on the field, seemingly always hurt. One of these days he will manage to stay healthy long enough to put up some decent numbers but I doubt he could ever sustain it.

In my view, Cardinal ownership and management since Larussa's departure have not put a priority on the manager. They have their analytics and anybody can follow the spreadsheet. I know that is an oversimplification of facts. However, when an organization that promotes itself as one of the tops in baseball consistantly hires inexperienced managers one has to wonder. I am glad that Mike Schildt got another chance, but it took 2 years for him to get that opportunity. He had to go to another organization and work his way up. We all know about Mike Matheny's history with Kansas City. If Oliver Marmol is fired after this year, how many suitors are going to be knocking at his door? Hopefully, he can right the Redbird ship and sail off into the playoffs and maybe advance from there.

That is a lot of yen. My goodness! I'd rather the Dodgers back up the truck for him, hopefully makes it tougher to fill out the rest.

supposedly a lot of deferred $$$$$$............Just think about it though...............$ 70 million annually for 10 years......I remember when $ 100 K a year was considered a lot of coin.....I'm old , I really really am.............

100% on ownership and agree

GM Walt Jocketty didn't agree with where ownership was trying to take things. Win the 06 World Series and he was the fall guy in 07. They upgrade yes man Mo and once LaRussa was gone they go by the numbers like you said. If the manager doesn't follow DeWitt/Mo they cut the cord.

70M per yr for one player would be franchise suicide for probably 25 of the 30 MLB teams. Even with a really large team payroll 1 of every 4 payroll dollars would be going to 1 player. If he gets hurt and can't play big problems will ensue for the Dodgers. I won't feel a bit sorry for them.

I think where this hurts LA is when they need to fill out their depth. You are taxed out in California and when you need a guy for 1 or 2 years but can only offer say 6-9 mil a year, that doesn't spread as far as it would on other spots. Alot of those guys targeted for spots like that are winding down a career and need to maximize. I know we are talking about millions of dollars, but it definitely has to play a part.

This is also a franchise that doesn't really allow pitchers to pitch past 5 innings anymore and Ohtani isn't pitching next year. They are going to need arms in that pen. With all that said, I wish our Birds were in this position.

If he can stay on the field he can be of help to somebody. it seems he never listened to the training staff or
coaches. good luck Tyler. now we need to say goodbye to two more outfielders. (i still think Edman is an
infielder, gold glove 2b) Strength up the middle has been a hallmark of good cardinal teams. You'd think two
of Carlson, Burleson, Donovan would get us a #2 starter. Might have to throw in the minor league base stealer/
centerfielder in lieu of one of the above. Winn and Walker are "no deal".

7 major league teams have annual payrolls less that Othani's annual. boy, i hope they lose.
Looks like they will pay Ohtani 2 million a year and defer the rest until after the 10 year playing contract. I haven't read any full articles on it, but I think I will have a real problem with that structure. Seems like complete BS.

It's allowed under the CBA. There's no limit on the amount of money that can be deferred but teams have to set aside the present day value of the deferred money, which for Ohtani is about $44 million in cash each year, into an escrow account. Besides, it's not as if Ohtani is hurting for money with all the endorsements he does already and more money he'll make with a big market club like the Dodgers.

this is where the commissioner needs to step in. dodging the luxury tax is not good for the game.
Nothing he can do until CBA gets looked at again after the 2026 seaon. Very rare instance but definitely will be talked about before that time.

Ohtani can make $40-50 million a year in endorsements/events off the field. Smart move by him to get paid now/later plus team can add pieces around him.

Dodgers have been waiting a year plus for him(pains me to say that since I don't like them)

So what happens when a big-market baseball franchise with ultra-wealthy ownership also has elite management?
It signs prized free agent Shohei Ohtani to a mind-boggling contract (10 years, $700 million!) with the most team-friendly structure imaginable.
At Ohtani’s suggestion, this deal features $680 million deferred, interest-free. That takes competitive balance tax management to new levels, as this structure shaves nearly $34 million per year off of Ohtani’s CBT hit.
